Am i reading this right that a Wizard can equip robes and a buckler to gain 2 defence (as this does not grant any soak)?

Yep. Not an issue though if you ask me. The wizards are weak enough as it is.

Yes, as long as the armor only has defense and not soak a wizard can use it.
Maybe you could rule that the wizard's staff is effectively a buckler. That way you get the defence and the wizard doesn't look like an idiot.

You wouldn't even have to go that far unless you wanted to. A staff has the "Defensive" trait which means that it adds an extra Misfortune die when using the Parry action. Of course, you need Str 3 to get Parry...

On the other hand, he could use both the staff and the buckler as the rules are written for some extra protection (if he has str 3). He would still look like a fool though
