R5-TK Salvaged Astromech

By madsmty, in X-Wing

The new Salvaged Astromech states that you can acquire target locks and attack friendly ships.

What scummy tactics can be done with this?

I can think of one: Send a Dead Man Switch Z-95 on a Kamikaze run, but this would be an expensive 14 point - 1 splash damage missile and hard to trigger at the exact moment. It will be more effective to use harpoons or assault missiles.

So, what is the purpose of this droid?

Scav crane? I think this is mostly just a for funsies card they threw in as a larf.

Protection from jammers for a deadeye scurrg?

Ok. I can see that, a friendly ship with low hp left and needing it to die for scav crane.

Can you elaborate?

Speaking of harpoons, so with this droid, can I harpoon a friendly ship and then continue to attack it to deal its splash damage to the opponent. (choosing not to defend from the attacks, hoping for a crit)

Get a TL to a friendly ship round 1. Discard that TL (as opposed to a focus token) when hit with jammers.

I think jammed only works with blue TL tokens

Yes, this is correct. The droid is a way to TL someone without enemy ships in range (Same can be achieved with LRS, however one may want to equip one Scurrg with GC to trigger harpoons)

The poster did say it was to help Deadeye ships.

Yes, now I understand how it could be useful.

Can this droid be used in conjunction with Thread Tracers to grant target locks on a friendly ship to your entire squad within range 1-2?

Nope. Usual limitations on acquiring target lock still apply (for example, LRS-equipped ship can't get TL via tracers at range 2)

I can think of the tractor beam, but no scum ship has that combo yet. An in combat arc dodge would be fun.

I still think throwing a proton bomb with trajectory simulator is the best use of a Scum Suicide squad.

Also Scum can do that already. Spacetug.

Would have been hilarious with gunner but no longer possible.

I got it, use the droid to attack your own dengar, then dengar attacks you. Nothing in his ability text would prevent this

Could be used in conjunction with Operations Specialist.

There are also Rebel options through the Havoc title.

Ooh. That's be really cool. "WATCH OUT!"

A very nice idea - irritatingly though scum are the one faction who already have the potential to tractor their own ships with the quadjumper.

Nice one. Plus if you have a "when you acquire a target lock" trigger it goes off (not sure if any scum do).

Hmmm... Wasn't thinking rebels. That's much more interesting!

  • Put a point of damage into Wulfwarro to trigger his "extra shootiness"
  • Blow up a nearly dead Z-95 to trigger HotR Chewbacca's free shot.
  • Sadly you can't use it to trigger Thane, because his trigger is an enemy ship attacking, not a friendly being shot at.

Use the droid to fire scramblers at an easy to hit target of your own to strip tokens from enemies in R1? Easier to hit a 1AGI ship than a 3AGI token stacked ship and as they do no damage; why not shoot your own ship if it gets the effect off at a crucial time?

Or Harpoon the Z-95!

That seems to be the aim(!) yes.

Also to get Torani's effect off, potentially, against a ship that moved into range after you moved.

Yeah, I was thinking about how it work with Torani and it could be useful in some niche situations.

I'd expect it to be niche. A 0 point upgrade SHOULD be niche, or have a high penalty, or both.

This raises the question: Is a ship in arc of itself?

Even more fun: First attack yourself with Adv. Protorps then with 4 dice primary and let Dengar blow himself Up in one turn.
