Crates of not Krayts - Alternative beasts

By MasterZelgadis, in Game Masters

I am sending my players into the Crates of Krayts module saturday. But after playing the escape from Mos Shuuta and Long arm of the Hutt, I don't want them to have to visit Tattooine for a third time now. But with krayt only appearing on Tattooine, I want to make up an alternative predator from another planet. But the only alternatives I can come up with now are Rancors and Nexu. Nexu are a no, because I want to send the PCs into the Beyond the Rim module later, so they should not visit Cholganna now. Rancors are also kind of out, because I want to save Dathomir for an other session, when our force user will be present (to give her some dark side effects..). Only option left for me is a Felucia Rancor, but maybe you have some nice alternatives for me?

I personally love vornskrs)))

but it can be pretty much anything - a wrix, a sludge/sand panther, a gundark etc.just think of what you want to do with it in terms of game mechanics and story. knowing my players they would most likely want to make a pet out of it)))

I'm fond Drexls, Krayt sized flying beasties from Dxun. Otherwise you can use a Zakkeg, also from Dxun. They have stats that you can find in operation shadowpoint.

Make them go onto Felucia. Easiest planet for hardcore nature and beast that will haunt and kill. Also a great place to set some hooks for future adventure with the deserted bases there.

The Wookie homeworld is famous for scary beasties... and plenty of opportunities for running into Imperials, Trandoshan Hunting Parties, Wookies, you name it...

I caught that.

Slight rant:

Your original premise presents one of the biggest issues that I see in the Star Wars community. (Aside from the error made twice by Bishop69) The movies represent a tiny fraction of the galaxy, and even the material in Legends still didn’t encompass everything. In a galaxy with hundreds of thousands of planets, there are more than 4 big animals.

Rant over.

Anyhow, if you’re set on a notable existing creature:

Kwazel Maw

Terentatek

Space Slug

Blixus

Sando Aqua Monster

Gundark

Wampa

Lylek

Vornskr

Acklay

Reek

Otherwise, make your own or head here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Predatory_creatures

Apologies...

Wookiee.

Sheeesh.

Thank you.

Acklays? I mean, soak 12 or something but like... ok?

Thank you for all the answers. I don't know if you know, how the adventure starts. Basically you have the job to transport a few crates with krayt dragons to a hutt crime boss. At the start the krayt are already caught and in the crates, and except from the players having to feed them and keep them sedated enough that they don'd rip the ship apart, they play no further role in the adventure. So basically it's really no big deal which exact creature it is. But for my group I didn't want to come up with something they never ever heard about, but instead a creature they know, and they know that it can cause severe damage if it gets out of that crate.

The problem with Dxun is the same I have with Dathomir. A strong dark side presence. Next session our force user will not be present, so I want to spare such things for sessions when she is back on the table

Do they have to pick up the beasties from the planet of origin? Why not substitute a deep-space rendezvous, or meet the suppliers on a out-of-the-way asteroid/moon base?

You could also look at using the Lylek s as presented in Long Arm of the Hutt (page 19) and use the Captive Rancor stats from the Beginners Game rule book (page 47). This would let you return to Ryloth. And as other posters have stated, the creatures to transport do not have to be native to the pickup location. Maybe a planet has outlawed the use of such cretaures and a local (somewhat shady) zoo, menagerie, or circus needs to get rid of them on short notice. Just because the show is also a credit laundering scheme for some higher-level baddie that will fold without said creatures is no real concern of the PCs is it?

oh I have a whole adventure prepped for this. my PCs have got a firend wookie who they've owe a lot for saving them in earlier adventures. so they'll get a distress call from him at some point to dive deep into the rough jungles of Kashyyk and put down wookie hunting trandoshans for good

Still not getting away with that.

No, they don't have to pick them up from there, it's not about the hunting, but about the smuggling. But I decided to sick with the Felucia Rancor idea. Started to make a map of Felucia in this style

Cyber-Nexu (yes they're a thing).

I did send my players to Felucia, I highly suggest to depict the environment as brutal bright colors, it is important that they don't feel safe at all never when outside the ship, use the fester lungs desease if they stay outside too long, make the food and water be a concern. Survival checks ofter. Often table top RP skips such skills like survival, and post game my players all enjoyed that survival was more important then ranged skills. Maybe the landing doesn't go well and it needs some repairs. So make them salvage old ships maybe fall onto an old separatists clone trooper base, maybe lay some plot hooks for future adventure. If your group struggle too much with full grown rancor. Made them face a younger one. Hope it helps a little

Okay. Like I said above, the adventure says, you get hired by Sinasu the Hutt to smuggle a juvenile Krayt Dragon and some eggs from Tattooine to Nar Shaddaa.

SPOILER!!

When they arrive, they see Sinasu's tower "Greentop" fully burned down. When players investigate, they find out, that one of Sinasu's Lieutenants had to do with the sabotage. They fly to Sinasu's safehouse, deliver the crates and to confront Sinasu with the information they got, when suddenly bounty hunters attack. You defend Sinasu, make the deal and then you get xp and money. Easy.

This is what I planned:

The sister of one of my characters is a slave of Sinasu. He just found that out. Plan was, they contact Sinasu, he has a little smuggling job for them, rest according to the module. When they defended Sinasu from the bounty hunters, Character gets his sister, everything fine.

As players NEVER do, what was planned.. here is what REALLY happend:

The player of the character told me, that he knows Sinasu, and Sinasu is very upsaet with him. If Sinasu sees him, he would probably shoot at first sight.
They jumped to Nar Shaddaa and found out Greentop was burned down, but also found out that the Dockmaster was treated in a nearby hospital. So they traveled there to interrogate the DOckmaster, which happened to know the character, but didn't know he betrayed Sinasu, so she was very cooperative.

After investigating the tower and finding out about the sabotage, they planned to infiltrate Sinasu's safehouse, to find out if he holds the characters sister there, if she survived. The character hid on the ship, while the rest of the group did the negotiations with Sinasu. Situation was very intense, an Anti Air gun was pointed at the players ship, while the player ships top turret pointed at the gun, many guns pointed at the characters, and Sinasu was very upset, thet they found his safehouse, to ask questions about the only slave he was able to take with him out of the burning tower.
At the top of the climax curve, bounty hunters, who followed the players, attacked the safehouse and an intense 3-party shooting broke out, with Sinasu's guys and players on the ground, and bounty hunter T-16 airspeeders and jetpack troops attacking both parties from above.

Situation ended with Sinasu using the SCs sister as a human (Nikto..) shield, to make the SC rescue him, and fly him out of here. They decided to do so, and after a pursuit with some bounty hunter cloakshape fighters, they brought Sinasu to the spaceport, where his freighter was docked. He released the sister of my SC and left the ship.... just that moment the SC rolled a grenade down the ramp of the ship.

We ended the game with a very hasty takeoff and blast to orbit, another pursuit with some local law enforcement fighters, and the radio message "Spaceport 27 to star destroyer 'Reaver', fleeing YT-1300 has criminals on board, please intercept". They managed to outrun the fighters, the star destroyer was docked with the TIE construction facility and in maintenance mode, but the call was relayed to the ISB. On the plus side, they saved the sister, had a blast of an adventure, which I could use some margin info from the written module, but had to improvise a shitload out of my *** (played only published adventures before).. and on the minus side we have obligation with Sinasu (who survived) and the ISB.

Little fun fact: To be some sort of covered, they changed the ID of their YT-1300 before flying to Nar Shaddaa, and ater 20 minutes of thinking about a new name, they came up with "Titanic". After a failed piloting check to navigate through the city and traffic at the pad, I named the freighter they rammed "Iceberg". That turned out to be a running gag, because after another failed check when leaving the pad, the freighter "Iceberg" tried to land at the pad, and they rammed it again. And even a third time, when blasting off from the spaceport (after the grenade), after a nearly failed check, again the "Iceberg" showed up, but they managed to evade it very closely. Great session!! :D
