Uthuk - Leveraging panic and the morale deck

By Church14, in Runewars Tactics

Time for deep thoughts about scaring our enemies into incoherent babbling fools. For those of us also playing ru wears, how to use the revealed Uthuk common upgrades.

Im liking Bannerscamp the most at first for the guaranteed distance 1-5 effects. None of the other revealed cards has that range, though (as was pointed out elsewhere), it meshes with Mutilated Grotesque.

Also, has anyone thought about a sort of sacrifice unit running Psychosis Siren and Rage Spine? Cause a small mountain of panic tests and double down on every effect offered?

Yeah, Bannerscamp is pure gold. It's great for those attacks when you roll a morale result but there are no panic tokens on the defender. Now that morale result can be saved for later. The second ability that puts panic tokens on after rallies is also great. However, I think it turns into a trap if you just keep stacking tokens, waiting for 3 or 4 on the defender before resolving a morale test because then they rally 2 or 3 of them away. Sure, they still have 1, which is great for Spined Threshers, but you were probably better off spending them sooner.

Rage Spine is a neat upgrade, but I'm not sure how much effect it will have. Half of the morale cards are 1-cost, but there are only 4 effects: receive 2 panic tokens, discard all boons or receive 1 panic token, receive 1 immobilize token, receive 1 stun token. Half of those cards could just be granting more panic tokens. Is it worth putting panic tokens on just to trigger them and add more panic tokens? That's what I'm not sure of. And if you put 2 stun or immobilize tokens on, won't they just rally them away? So how is that better than a single stun or immobilize token? (Granted, Bannerscamp keeps up your momentum by putting a panic token on after that.) Then the question is, is it worth taking a stun to assign 2? Is it worth taking 2 panic tokens to assign 4? These are questions Uthuk warlords will need to ask themselves.

How much fun bannerscamp will be when the archers for Uthuk arrive.

Here is is a question I’ve had, if I run two Bannerscamps, can I add two panic tokens when somebody rallies if they are within range of both. If I can do that, it suddenly becomes very difficult for opponents not to get stuck with 2+ panic tokens and suffer high severity tests.

That's awesome! I don't see why it wouldn't work that way.

Yeah, sure seems to. How terrible.

The very interesting thing about these morale effects is that they're available on very small units. Rage Spine and Bannerscamp can be taken on 2x1's, and you can get a Mutilated Grotesque on a 2x2. With the kind of Panic token coverage we're looking at, everything in the game has to respect that unit. Also, the very valid question of " is it worth taking a stun to assign 2? Is it worth taking 2 panic tokens to assign 4?" is probably YES when their unit costs 80 points and yours costs 20.

That 2x1 with bannerscamp sounds like a fun 20 point debuff zone behind a big unit that matters.

Need a good ranged Fortunas dice elf archer hero to be my elf Kari..

Elves don't have an infantry hero yet (and they seem least likely to get a siege hero?)

A Scion Ancient maybe?

Nope, scions are too lame for heroism.

Truth! It would have to be a gigantic Forest Guardian! Like, like, Treebeard on steroids! ...or fertilizer, or whatever.

As long as that unit is better than scions, which I don't like painting, and don't like using in my army either.

I am loving these Uthuk panic shenanigans.

Fear Incarnate makes every morale test into a mini loss-of-faith for a few infantry or maybe a cav model. Cacophony Reaver gives you enough information to know if you want to spend morale tokens, how many, and whether or not your need to mill the top card to get what you want. Dragonjaw Focus lets you hammer big formations with morale effects that heroes are immune to, like Loss of Faith, with impunity.

I need more panic tokens!

Isn't dragon jaw focus a Kethra upgrade?

It's an Uthuk unique Artifact.

I meant don't you get it with her expansion. But I realized after you must be proxying.

Well, I tried Fear Incarnate on Ravos, two Bannerscamps, a Mutilated Grotesque, and a Bloodfire Witch all in a list. I was facing a Hawthorne and double spearstar list.

Bannerscamps barely affected the game, but that was really due to Hawthorne passing inspiration and his army not needing Rallies. Rage Spine would have been more useful.

Bloodfire Witch did a bit of work. I feel like she does more against a swarm. It wasn’t great here. She does have some great synergy with Spined Threshers.

Mutlated Grotesque is fantastic. Will be using a lot again. The extra morale for one attack is actually very handy for hitting the severity three threshold. The ability to draw an extra made a major difference.

Spined Threshers, even as solo figures, are awesome for keeping Panic everywhere and causing solid damage.

Fear Incarnate put up at least an additional 8-10 Damage.

So I managed to get flee in terror to trigger on both stars. One ran into a aspire Barricade and 3 more Spearmen died. The other just barely missed hitting another barricade. I didn’t get the Betrayal I was hoping for, but embracing the Morale deck was interesting and a fun strategy. Here’s to actually killing it next game.
