Hey guys, new here. Recently discovered this game. A few friends have it and have played some. I've thought about getting a few boxes and see how I do. One of my friends urged me to get the original boxes if possible as the cards are harder to come by and have more value. Our area is pretty cleaned out of them (except singles, which I could get but thought a couple boxes would be more efficient given the chance to get some power cards and others needed to actually build a deck). Being new though, I don't know what the set names are or what to look for, other than the game in general! So, I am hoping to find out:

--Set names

--Chronological order of release

-- Places (besides "your local game store" these maybe found) I can check out to cover additional ground

Any help is GREATLY appreciated, thanks so much ahead of time!

Ok so the sets, in order (oldest first) are:

The "awakenings" cycle:

Awakenings (includes kylo and rey starter sets)

Spirit of rebellion

Empire at War

There is also the 2 player starter set which came out shortly before Empire at War, but is part of;

The Legacies Cycle:

2 Player Starter set

Legacies (includes the boba fett and luke skywalker starter sets).

Note - Legacies has not been released yet and is due mid-late december i think.

As for where you can find "older" sets - Awakenings was underprinted and remains difficult to come by, but google-fu should get you as much Spirit of Rebellion as you can eat.

Awakenings was reprinted this summer.

Empire at War (SWD07a) was released September 2017.

The first three sets will rotate out of standard play sooner than Legacies, so you might want to hold off on buying them if that matters to you:

Thanks guys! Really appreciate it. As I mentioned, I am new to this game and I didnt realize basically it was gonna be ran like Magic in that there is a current block and "older" ones that will cycle out.

My friend strongly suggested getting the first set because he said so many of the rares are highly priced for trade and sale if needed. I didnt realize they woukd cycle out ans become "obsolete". I appreciate all the info but especially that piece about the cycles!

It sounds like it is your guy's opinion that I should just get the more recent stuff rather than hassle to try and get the OG set?

The older sets are still going to be playable in Standard format for a full year, and they'll be playable in an Infinite format if you feel your area will have enough players to support that. Basically depends on how you want to play the game.

If you're playing with friends mostly and not tournaments, I'd suggest the Awakenings cycle. The main characters are all represented fairly well with Luke, Vader, Han, Jabba, Palpatine all being fairly strong characters.

If you're more interested in tournaments and have a newer play group, then Legacies cycle plus singles is probably the way to go.

I personally feel that the Infinite format will be played alongside Standard at most major events for the next several years. If that ends up being the case then the Awakenings cycle will be worth the investment.

Do you guys think getting the Awakenings starter sets are worth the time or am I better off scrounging for boxes of boosters?

The reason I ask is some card games' starter sets will include possible great rares, some tend to be very static with the cards you get and thus those, even the rares, become fairly common. Just seeing if getting starter sets is a (less) viable way to get Awakening cards since they seem to be more available (from the research I am doing anyhow).

The 2 player starter sets are a great starting point. The Awakenings starters do have some good cards, mostly blue.

I find 1 booster box then singles is best way to buy.

After doing more research and additional reading of this, I have another question...is the initial "block" of sets referred to as "Awakenings"? Or is that just the first set name? The way the Fantasy Flight link provided talks, it is as if the Awakenings is a block, which has multiple sets....the Amazon link provided shows a booster pack box of 36 for Awakenings...is that just straight Awakenings set or is that Awakenings block and Spirit of Rebellion set?

So, I am assuming that should I want a well rounded collection, I should get, say a box of Awakening, Spirit of Rebellion and Empire at War? Assuming each set has different cards which would make that worth while....?

That would definitely get you the best assortment for your collection. There are great commons and uncommons in each set. Awakenings has more of the iconic characters, but SoR and EaW have the better chase cards (Force Speed and Ancient Lightsaber respectively).

swDestinydb.com is a great resource with checklists of what is in what. If you want to avoid spoilers, then not the best place to look, but if you want specific characters or cards then it'll let you know what comes from where.

A box of each will give you an awesome collection, and most likely plenty of trade fodder to trade for whatever you want. They won't be rotated out of standard play for another year, so you'll still get plenty of use out of them.

If I was buying into the game now I think I would hold off on buying the older stuff, I would invest in legacies and 2x two player starter decks and then I would look at what I was building from those and pick up the cards from the Awak, SoR, EaW as single for what I needed for my decks. As with only 12 months left in the play cycle of the older stuff it's better to drop the cash on stuff that will carry you through 2 years

Go to Starwars Destiny DB. Get some ideas on what kind of deck/decks you want to play. This game is much more fun when your deck has a good theme. Good decks seem to have cards from all the sets as well as specific cards pics that seem designed to help you focus your strategy and make your deck run more efficiently. If you collect this game in it's entirety or take your chances with tons of boosters, it will break you financially. Just saying. Some fun things to buy would be the new Two Player Stater Set. It has cards that cannot be found elsewhere.
