Starwars novels suggestions

By Malasombra, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Hi there...

Xmas is coming, and with them, juicy presents. :D

I want to try some starwars novels, and i don't want to buy random garbage.

Can i have some suggestions recommendations?

Preferences:

-"New" canon or more updated novels

-NO prequels storyline if possible.

-If expanded universe, only the good ones (maybe Thraw's saga or something like that?)

I need them in spanish edition, but that's my problem.

Thanks in advance, guys!

The iconic ones from the 'legends' universe:

  • Heir To The Empire
  • Dark Forces Rising
  • The Last Command

The newer series:

  • The Aftermath trilogy is....okay.
  • Tarkin is better.

If you can get them/don't mind the format, I can most honestly recommend the graphic novels - I think they're a more enjoyable read than Wendig's books:

  • Black Squadron covers the first few issues of the Poe Dameron series
  • Vader is just...well....firstly it introduces Dr Aphra (an interesting side character), 0-0-0 and BT-1 (two awesome characters) but it also shows off just how awesome the dark lord of the sith really is.

Everything by James Luceno, everything by Claudia Grey (if you don't mind going a bit young adult).

Spoiler regarding the Vader graphic novel

Though I really like that series it would have been so much more awesome if he actually had kille the Dr.

I think X-Wing: Rogue Squadron is the best Star Wars novel that I've read (and starts an very engaging four-volume series). After that, the Thrawn Trilogy and its follow-on duology are essential old-canon reading and probably the most 'Star Wars' Star Wars story produced outside of the films. Of course, the skill of the translator may have a large effect on the quality of any of these novels.

I really enjoyed Labyrinth of Evil by James Luceno, but it's a direct prequel to Revenge of the Sith . I've also read the Legacy of the Force series -- I must have enjoyed it, as I read all nine volumes, though I remember feeling the prose quality wasn't extremely high, possibly due to the authors' deadlines. It's the old canon's take on the 'Solo son turns to the Dark Side' plotline and is fairly convincing. However, there are a lot of characters in the later, serial pre-Disney novels -- it's not an obstacle to reading, but you may not be invested in all of them.

I haven't read any of the new-canon novels, so can't comment on them. Whatever you pick, I hope you enjoy it; let us know how it was, especially in translation!

Yeah, I'd recommend the Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron series (by Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston respectively).

Great books, and a good match to the X-wing game.

I've been trying to read all the new canon as well. Here's my thoughts on the ones me or my father and brother have read:

Books :

Aftermath trilogy - NO. Don't read it unless you like books that are too short, lack drama, and cut between scenes like they were written by a deranged ewok. A monstrosity that never should have been allowed into the canon.

Tarkin, Lords of the Sith - I haven't read these two, but both my brother and father say they're awesome.

Dark Disciple - prequels, but excellent.

Claudia Grey novels - all good. She's a great writer. I don't know what kind of books you like, but these books are less macho than the others, they're more focused on plot and characters.

New Dawn - I've heard it's great if you like Rebels. (I do, so it's on my list of things to read).

Comics (all Marvel) :

Poe Dameron Comics - the best. Too bad Battlefront II spoiled the ending. The story, the characters, it's just so fun, and feels like a real Star Wars movie.

Princess Leia Comics - awesome. Again, more focused on characters and plot, so a lot of people don't like these, but I loved them.

Darth Vader Comics, Dr. Aphra Comics, Star Wars Comics - meh. They're ok, but not a great buy, because you have to buy a lot of comics for not a lot of plot. And they get repetitive in my opinion. The art is mostly good though.

Lando Comics, Chewbacca Comics, Kanan Comics - great little spinoff series. Highly recommended.

My view on Aftermath: Great characters throughout the series. Great story in the second and third book. Unpleasant to read writing style makes it hard to bear, though. The second and third book had me hooked, but I am still not sure wether it is worth it.

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions... I really appreciate it.

For the moment, i asked for Tarkin, Catalyst, and Lost Stars... These are available in spanish.

But i'll write down the rest of the suggestions for the future or updates on the list.

Good choices for sure!

The recent battlefront book is decent. Not dinner or anything, just dessert. The audio version is voiced by Janina Gavankar (the actress for Iden in the game) which made it enjoyable.
