3 vipers. could they be good?

By Scoundrel, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I CANNOT make them work. trying to find good builds for each viper but its impossible to give them different roles, imho.

only one I have locked in is intensity guri.

flew here with an assassin and oberon. both with attani and thrusters. it was an ok list but not near viable for tourney play.

any builds out there that I need to know about?

I think it's going to be hard.

I was thinking Virago (AdvS/Glitter) Thweek with Attanni Mindlinked Guri and Dalan Oberos, but that only comes out to 93 points. Intensity Guri looks fine, but Mindlink is also great on her, since she can sometimes rely on free tokens, and kinda bring things back to pre-nerf levels of action economy. To each their own, I'm sure. Anyhow, the pilot skills on Guri or Dalan are kind of low for the things you'd love to do with them. Meanwhile, when there's this many free points available in a list, I think they tend to be underpowered.

Two Starvipers + [stuff] might work out better.

Alternately, Four Starvipers. Thweek + 3x Black Sun enforcer (all with Mk. II and Autothrusters) seems OK, and I know I've seen folks discussing a 4x BSE (just Mk. II) + Sunny Bounder list.

lots of good advice from others in this old post

This is a build list that I've been toying with for a little while now, and will probably try out:

Dalan Oberos (30)
Stay on Target (2)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Cloaking Device (2)
Pulsed Ray Shield (2)
Virago (1)

Total = 40

Guri (30)
Fearlessness (1)
Pulsed Ray Shield (2)
StarViper Mk. II (-3)

Total = 30

Tweek (28)
Intensity (2)
Pulsed Ray Shield (2)
StarViper Mk. II (-3)

Total = 29

Grand Total = 99

Please bear in mind that I am only a casual player and not a tournament player, so my primary interest - while I do look for some good synergy - are cool, fun to try out builds vs. highly efficient lists. Anyways, God bless and I hope you do well at your tournament ^_^ .

Who says it just has to be three vipers?

  • Black Sun Enforcer (25) x2
    • Starviper Mk. II (-3)
    • Plasma Torpedoes (3)
    • Guidance Chips (0)
  • Black Sun Enforcer (25)
    • Starviper Mk. II (-3)
    • Proton Torpedoes (4)
    • Guidance Chips (0)
  • Serissu (20)
    • "Heavy Syck" Interceptor (2)
    • XX-23 S-Thread Tracers (1)
    • VI (1)
    • Guidance Chips (0)

Total 100

You've got a pretty good alpha strike - three torpedoes backed up by focus and chips should be enough to take most ships off the table. Serissu's ability ensures that your opponent will have to work really hard to take out an enforcer before it fires. After round one I'm not sure how it'll do; most of your ships suffer from low pilot skill, but a Mk. II Starviper is a pretty darn good blocker and their maneuverability means you should be able to cover your arcs pretty well. Definitely want some feedback on this idea - I figured I'd try to do something worthwhile with the generic pilots for a change.

I think two vipers +friend could do something. Three vipers just seems to weak cause only one gets Virago title.

Guri,Thweek,Asajj maybe

I agree.

I really like the star viper. I've been playing the game a long time and have yet to make (or see) a triple viper list that was more than 'just for fun'.

You're not using enough 'Vipers! Oddly enough, the way I see it is you take one Starviper, tack the Virago abd a bundle of goodies onto it, and pretend like you're flying an ace*. Without Mk-II title... yeesh. Without the Virago title, the ship seems... ungreat, let's say. That is, until you have 4 of them, with their manager Sunny Bounder to hold hands and form a decent hit squad that provides blocks, general squirelliness, and combines pretending to be an ace* with raw numbers. So far, I'm enjoying the **** out of it.

(*They lack the PS to be aces/arc dodgers, except for Thweek with a bid, who lacks the EPT. Clever, that. Even so, they are built to be flown by and for aces. Frustrating, that...)

Did my 2nd game o’Vipers last night. Won!

I am finding upgrades that allow dice mods are worth the investment. I got a lot more use out of FCS than AS - boost and the bendy BR give plenty of repositioning options on their own. Cloaking device came in handy to get Thweek out of a cluster f***, and promptly broke ?. Autothrusters kicked in a couple times but I still question if SD is better for a 3 green ship.
