Why so certain?

Not that I like to be "debbie downer" but in my opinion, it's the fact there's probably a lot of overlap in markets between Star Wars products. FFG is still a small-ish company and they might be getting pressure from Asmodee to consolidate product lines for better manufacturing turn-around times.

I don't have any data to back it up at the moment, only anecdotal evidence. I wouldn't be surprised to see Armada and Imperial Assault go the way of the Dodo.

Not that I'm hoping for that scenario, but I'd happily make cards for the game and keep playtesting stuff if we stopped getting FFG support.

I disagree that it's static. You have the Venator, replaced by the Victory I, replaced by the Victory II, replaced by the Imperial I, replaced by the Imperial II... all in about 25 years.

You have the Headhunter replaced by the T65 X wing, the B replacing the Y. And the creation of the A. Looking forward another 20 years shows the /FO replacing the /LN, the T-70 and T-85 replacing the T-65, and something going on with the A wing... they are not at a steady state of technology.

I think the poin they are trying to make is that all of those are refinement of existing technology. None of them updating the base level.

like, they all have various configurations of blasters, ions and turbo lasers, so it’s like being stuck in, say, the machine gun dogfight era... there is no big breakthrough that amounts to the modern day equivalent of the jet figter and guided missiles... that new threat jump.

insread, they just make the equivalent of faster prop planes with bigger (or more) guns.

Sideways technological motion instead of forward leaps of change.

I do disagree a little. “Thrawn” has commenting about, at least how the Empire THINKS they have progressed from the clone wars...

“And the tech is at least a decade old... You’d have to be crazy if you think you can defeat modern turbo lasers with blaster cannons. “

I don’t see a lot of overlap between Armada and X-Wing though. X-Wing is the biggest, fast based, fly by the seat of your pants, rapid change dogfighting game on the market whose biggest competitor would be Star Trek Attack Wing or that D&D Dragon game... and they are not even in the same league as X-Wing.

Armada is the only Fleet based game on top selling boards. I guess you could try to put it up against Attack Wing, but Armada also blows it out of the water. There was a Halo fleet game, but it died a swift and quiet death. No other Fleet based game out there can touch it. Prestige alone should keep it afloat, let alone a strong and at times rabid fan base, and plenty of material that can still be explored.

I can see IA being retired to make room for Legion, but I think there is plenty or room for both space games. Especially if they keep slow-boating Armada’s releases.

I'm not saying i don't like Armada's ship release schedule, I don't mind only getting 1/2 waves / year BUT, better communication and "extras" like campaigns are what we're pining for. No one disagrees that X-wings release schedule is crazy town, I've argued for a while now that X-wing DESPERATELY needs a second edition to fix its weird "urban sprawl" of space ships.

X-Wing very much could use a second edition, but they probably at least won't come out with one until the sequel trilogy is done, and then there is the issue of the current fan base. You can't just rerelease the same ships after people have invested so much into the game, or at least I'd hope they wouldn't do that, so they'd need to release some kind of conversion pack or the like to allow people to at least keep using their models. That said, I think Armada learned a whole bunch from X-wing's design so I imagine a X-Wing 2.0 would be learning from the lessons of Armada and their other games, probably allowing a more dynamic system with other dice types and probably some missions or the likes to not have every game be a death match.

The way of the dodo you mean some people just coming by and clubbing them to death? I think IA with the app might end up only getting one or two more box releases and will just let people mess with the app to play around with their game and reduce their releases to be more like Descent, I don't follow that game but I can't remember their last expansion or figure packs.

Descent 2nd Edition dried up after they got their App. I don’t remember a new announcement for them since then. I think you’re right, IA could be the same.

Wait, you haven't had FFG employees show up at your local game store and hit players with billy clubs?

Sometimes I like to talk like I'm in the 1840s.

No, we've only had some greasers come by beat us, comb their hair all stylishly and then write some kind of American Graffiti on the walls. :P

I believe Descent got one small big box expansion after the app came out. I think there is too much money on the table with the SW IP to let IA just go to app only.
