An Imperial Crew Carrier

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

The Good: Slots for crew, but not a shuttle.

The Bad: It's a TIE variant.

The Ugly: Oh boy, it sure is.

Still, in the lore it can carry a crew of 3. It's also 24 meters long, so it would probably quality as a large base ship for the Empire.

I actually like the design. In fact, I like it so much that I bought a 3D printed one and painted it up myself:

I’m getting U-wing vibes here. I think has potential. Still it’s not a shuttle, even though the assault shuttle would probably bring spalko (Price) and possibly thrawn as crew.

Looks like you have it on a small base. Not large base material, then?

I really like the U-Wing as is*, so that's a good thing.

*Because I don't expect it to dogfight.

This is Mel's version, which isn't much bigger than a regular TIE. The EU version is 24m long. So, it should be larger and be on a large base. However, I'm using mine for a TIE prototype facility Epic Play scenario I'm designing. So, I'll just apply a healthy dose of Star Wars handwavium and say it's a smaller, prototype version.

Thrawn used TIE Scouts in the EU a little, so he could logically be included in such a pack.

Personally, I'm not opposed to the TIE Scout (or Lone Scout-A, the civilian version). People can complain about more TIEs all they like, they need to go back into the past and do it. For "balance" purposes though I'd say I prefer a small base, the Empire really only has the TIE Shuttle for that purpose and that involves point restrictions and isn't necessarily built to be a support ship. But, since the Scout can carry two crew reasonably it might be alright. Empire still could use something in the same ballpark as a HWK, a small base carrier for like, one important crewman or similar. Rebels are constantly iterating on this concept, and Scum are full of large base one-crew carriers.

Patrol Transports are better.

Personally I’m happy to see more tie variants. Since it’s kind of the mainstay and the signature fighter of the imperial fleet.

I’m sure the only big factor with the tie scout is how redundant will it be to the tie shuttle. And making the default role of the tie scout support for tie fighters much like you can use the hwk to support ships like Y-wings and B-wings (Consistently anyway, given all those ships respective dials) I think would change it up enough without making the tie shuttle useless.

I like this design too. I’d buy 2.

Exactly. Do people who complain about Imperial TIE and shuttle variants also complain about the lack of variety in the military aircraft of the world today? You have jets and helicopters. Sure, there’s some variations but they’re all of the same basic design. The Empire is a vast military machine. It’s only logical that they’d find some basic designs that work and contract them out for mass production.

Variations in the design of Rebel and Scum ships make sense since the Rebellion scrounges up whatever ships it can press into service from wherever it can. Scum isn’t even a military organization - they’re freelancers or syndicate thugs. They’re going to use whatever suits their fancy and tweak it to suit their needs.

Well, I have to confess I was having TIE burnout. Especially knowing that the StarWing and the Skipray were both obvious designs that still were being skipped. The TIE/ag was rough on my Imperial soul. But, we have the StarWing now, and I think the Silencer is going to have a table presence that makes it feel like Not Your Average TIE Fighter.

Seeing the Scout, Avenger and Vanguard in my old Decipher CCG makes me want them for this game; I'd be cool with the Hunter these days, too.

OTOH, I dare say that each new TIE/var that comes out just makes my beloved Squints all that much more useless and out of date. :(

I would really like another good quality Imperial shuttle that runs more like a shuttle than a giant starfighter.

It's odd that you would specifically mention those four ships as those are the four prototypes I chose for my scenario:

If you want more "Tie Variants" How bout we get the "Tie Cruisers" into the game, they arn't much larger then the Blockade Runner or Raider, and it would release a new Epic ship to the field.

ImperialStarCruiser.jpg

Personally I think its ugly, but it would open the door for the Rebel version, which looks far more attractive for a ship to field on the table.

Light_corvette.jpg

After all, it wouldnt be the first unit stolen from Galactic Battlegrounds Saga to be in X-Wing Miniatures

Redline-XWM.png Yes, thats right, the Punisher is the final Imperial upgrade for the Tie Bomber in this game....

Or how bout.....

I just super love the idea of a large ship crew carrier that is a "TIE" so that it could take the Twin Ion Engine Mk 2 mod.

Now, this thing is ugly. It looks like Optimus Prime had a baby with a TIE bomber.

Everytime I see it, its like someone to the head of a Imperial AT ST, enlarged it to 3 or 4 times the size, and attached it to a pair of Tie Foils..... and stuck a cannon under it.

Hey Rufus, I got you a candy bar. It's in the airlock. . .

I love the Hunter, so I'd also love to see it in game. And Imperials only ship in the "medium cost primary shooty average move-y" ships race is the poor TIE/x1, so it could diversify them without going to Defender and Silencer levels of breaking the bank. Something along a better costed E-Wing/StarViper tier but with less red moves than an /SF. I'd also love to see what FFG could do with the TIE Oppressor and some other niche models, but at the moment Imperials are at 3 "low cost ships who use secondary weapons because they can't do **** with their primaries" ships, where as the other two factions have 1. And it's the same one.

Or LWF, since you know it would have 1-2 agility. If it's cheap enough (and has the System slot it should) you could slap a jammer on there, try and do some long range support or just get up in tight. Tanky support.

If we're gonna do an alt Y-Wing, can we do the Longprobe instead?

Plus I think a better, Punisher-esque version of the Y-Wing exists elsewhere, published by FFG even.

Ah yes, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. Source of many oddball and terrible designs that should have never again seen the light of day.

Enter the TIE Interdictor Punisher, the laziest starfighter design in Star Wars.

Honestly with the Punisher put before the Gunboat, I can imagine the Cruiser being featured in one of the mobile games and >bam< it's rendered in plastic for X-Wing. Long before something tasteful like the TIE Avenger.

Anyway.

I'd take the scout, and the Vanguard actually. I'm fond of the CCG and these designs didn't seem too crazy out there cut-and-pasted together. I'd buy 'em.

Imperial Quadjumpers FTW. Okay maybe not like the Quadjumper but an Imeprial ship with the reverse move but packing more firepower. Just what the game needs, helo gunships. Sure we got the Migs and the F-15s and the F-22s. But now this game needs Apache Gunships In Space !

This or the TIE Avenger. I mean there is no shortage of different type of TIEs from the EU (aka Legends). Now of course the question is what would it be, Obviously some sort of support ship with 2 firepower 2 agility has <crew> and <system> upgrade. I can see these with enhanced scopes and intel agents at a low price making them blockers, but then again we already got the TIE Phantom which has cloak.

The Avenger is a straight up fighter. I was trying to point out a non-shuttle crew boat.

Guys, these are all ugly and awful. What about the TIE Reaper from Rogue one?

Well again we have the TIE Phantom, so unless it is a cheaper less thretening TIE Phantom there could be may other things.

However for future Imperial ships. I am excited about this for a couple of reasons.

Two things, one an Imperial ship with the revers maneuver so Scum loses its monopoly, and more a ship with reverse maneuvers that has good firepower makes for an interesting ship that can shake up the design space and meta a bit.

Hasn't stopped the TIE Aggressor and TIE Punisher from being made so.....

I don't want those imperial gunships. They're non atmospheric. If we want a small crew carrier outside the TIE Shuttle card, my votes are the TIE Scout or the DX-9 Stormtrooper transport .
