22 hrs played, and i've unlocked 3 heroes (at the reduced rates), focusing on nothing else (And 1 was cheapie verso). Picked up maybe a dozen random cards between with the daily login boxes, with the best ones still being my preorder freebies. I still get regularly reamed by guys with multiple upgraded cards.......
EA Removes Purchasing from Battlefront 2
I've barely started playing with maybe 2-3 hours into the game. I am having fun. At this point, I"m still trying to figure out the game and get smoked by everyone. I play Conquest a lot, but ALWAYS seem to get Kyshyyyyk all the time. Day and night. In fact, out of 10 games, I've only seen 2 rounds that weren't that map. What's up with that?
It feels a lot to me like Battlefront 2 forgot the age group its primary fanbase consists of. Yeah adults play it, but it really held the eye of those ages 7-12. I know a slew of parents that let their children play it while shunning other FPS games like Battlefield and CoD... you know... because sci-fi violence doesn't count. (We let our 8 year old play those other games as long as he can tell us the reality behind the conflict and differentiates between the reality of war and the heroic fiction of a video game).
With that said my son loved the first Battlefront. He was hooked from the second he snagged a hero token and Boba Fett showed up on the screen.
The new one doesn't interest him as much. The initial problem was getting enough points to be a hero, followed by getting to pick the one you want. Those have been swept under the rug with practice, but now he's not a fan of the usual super-hero fight that wraps up nearly every match.
I get that complaint, because it's game design that's the problem. In the last Battlefront the heroes meant something when they showed up. Yeah they were tough, but a squad could focus on them and take them out. A good hero player knew to stay out of the areas where huge fights broke out, which was usually around objectives, meaning their impact was felt but not to the point where regular troops weren't the ones making the real difference.
This one is far different, especially with hero upgrades. It's made it to where players for the most part are just ignoring how they got evaporated by suped up Luke and just respawn and try and get back to the excellent shootout they were just having while playing the objective. And again: every match ends wirh a 3 on 3 heroes vs villains match with troops not adding much of anything to their side.
That many heroes just makes them come off as commonplace and is, to be honest, boring and/or frustrating, depending on your view (and age, most likely). It's a big change from the last one, and if they can't keep the kids interested, this one will sink pretty quick. They already don't have the teenage to mid twenties range, those gamers are deep in other FPS games (for the most part).

Theres only 6? maps on rotation with side swaps each round.
Kyshyyyk, naboo
Endor, Tatooine
Starkiller Base, and maz's homworld.
There are more coming next month.

Yes, there are 6 maps, but I've only seen 2 of them. I know it's luck of the draw and limited play, but I've played Kyshyyyk 6 out 8 times I've played. The other one was death star. It's just weird is all.

I'll have to play more, but I can see this. The end of each match has people that have saved up their points and it's a bit hero battle. I've not played a super lot yet, but I have seen this on some matches. I will say I like playing Officer and just plopping a turret near the final objective. It can kill characters, too. I've played a character and died to troopers, though. So.....it's not impossible. I think we might have to wait after the first month or so to see how people figure out the game. Also get upgrades and such that might deal with heroes better.

Hoth, Jakku, Kamino, Yavin IV and Deathstar 2 as well.
I heard the new patch removes all progression. Lol.

I did notice that you can buy "trooper" kits for 4,000 in game credits. I had enough to buy 3-4 of them and I have not that many games in. I did manage to get a number of useful upgrades, as well as bits and useless upgrades. So, it's not impossible to get these various cards.
I don't understand how to craft anything with the bits yet. I know you can make star cards, I just haven't bothered to look.
I know there are extra star card spaces that you can unlock with "lvl 5" something or another. Not sure how or what you need to do.
Overall, though, it seems like the various upgrades won't be too bad if I've already earned a few of them.

I've read best bang for your credits is hero crates... same amount of bits as the more expensive crates and still a chance at trooper cards. The min/maxers are doing that then crafting the cards they need with the bits.
I don't own the game yet so cant speak from experience.
Actually I did figure the crates and the crafting bit. So you do get star cards and it's not too difficult. I am trying to maximize my officer class as I think that's pretty darn cool. I just want to get the better pistol.
You should never have to gamble for upgrades and weapons those should come from playing matches.
EA royally f***** themselves with this because now government's have finally woken up to the gambling being pushed on kids.

Meh, it is no more or less random than if things are gated arbitrarily. Only becomes more problematic when you can also purchase the randomboxes. The best unlock system was one of the Black Ops CoDs, where with each level up you could chose unlocks from cathegories (meaning with a level up you got i.e. a scope token, which you could use to unlock any of the scopes to start playing with your personal preference earlier), so you could actually get things you want rather than random drops or randomly gated content. Sadly that system was never copied for all the CoD-ification that happened back then (and still sticks with us, ugh), and not even replicated in later CoD games.
I really don't get the appeal of unlock systems, I'd rather play an enjoyable version of the game I enjoy on a level playing field than play a less enjoyable version where you are rarely evenly matched until I get to play an enjoyable version where I almost always have an inherent advantage. You'd think a game being good should be motivation and reward enough for playing it.

Unlocks keep the game fresh as you get to use different weapons that you had to earn. I'm not saying I"m enjoying it, but it's what happens. I have found in some games that I go to unlock weapons that I don't even use, just do have them unlocked. Silly humans....

See, this is what I don't get. I can try these weapons if they are availiable from the beginning, too, and the game will be as fresh. Learning how to handle the weapon is rewarding enough - my favourite thing in DOTA was when a new hero 'clicked' with me, not because I had to put in time to unlock them, but rather to understand them. That is rewarding, not arbitrary 'you played x hours, here is your Vader'.
Unlock systems for me don't keep the game fresh, they make it less enjoyable in the beginning, taking away my motivation to spend time rather than encouraging it.
Please note that this applies to competetive multiplayer games only and is not comparable to unlocking content in a linear single player game like Transistor or Mario Kart.
It was the Mouse that made them do it.
But damage is already done and Disney is pissed.
The video below is another from Jimquisition but the title has profanity as well as the video so I put it behind a spoiler.
Caution : Language Profanity do not click spoiler if offended by such thing.
There was also a video mocking up Disney's phone call to EA. So who again were the Jonus Brothers?
I'm enjoying the game so far.
Disney is pissed. Fans are pissed. And the rest of the industry is pissed, because EA's greed just shown a giant spotlight on the predatory microtransaction environment. With potential governmental intervention.
And their shareholders are going to be pissed, if the sales data is anything to go buy.
Well we have several states in the us who want this banned, and a couple of countries in the EU.
EA must be bricking it right now, but so are a lot of companies.
Here's an explanation of the progression. It's a rather complicated system:
There are 3 types of currency: credits, crystals, and crafting parts.
Credits are earned by completing challenges (such as play for 10 minutes as a specific class, get X kills, etc) or at the end of a match. The end of the match bonus is solely based on how long the match is the best I can tell, with no bonus for winning. A galactic conquest match (about 15 minutes) will yield around 300 credits.
Crystals are mostly bought for real money (now disabled), but there are some challenges that reward some.
Crafting parts come from crates and are used to craft star cards (more on those in a second) that either you don't have, or are upgrading to. I think they also come from getting duplicate cards, I can't remember.
Crates contain a random number of star cards and can be purchased with either credits or crystals. A trooper crate contains 4-5 cards and costs 4000 credits. These cards are either white-green-blue qualities (purple is the highest, but can only be crafted). Mostly they are white cards. I've never actually purchased a hero crate (which contains hero star cards, not heroes themselves) or a ship crate, but they're cheaper than the trooper ones. I tend to play mostly Galactic Conquest and I'm not very good, so I'm rarely ever a hero.
There are a number of guns that can only be unlocked by playing that specific class. For example, to unlock the second gun for the trooper, you need 50 kills as a trooper. These guns are not necessarily upgrades, but have different characteristics. Each unlocked gun also has 3 upgrades to unlock (such as scopes) that can only be unlocked with X kills using that specific gun.
Player rank is account wide and is simply "you need X points earned until rank Y". Your rank can never go down, so the better you are, the faster your rank will increase. Player rank is one of the walls to upgrading Star Cards (more on that below).
There are 4 basic classes (trooper, heavy, officer, specialist). 2 upgrade classes (jetpack trooper, and I can't remember the name of the other one). And each hero is their own class essentially. Every vehicle type is it's own class as well. Each class has it's own class level and star card set.
Only the 4 basic classes are available all the time. You have to earn points mid-game to select the other ones. This is a one-time use until you die sort of thing, and some heroes are locked until you unlock them first with credits.
Ok Star Cards. These are upgrades to your abilities on a specific class/hero/ship. For example, on my trooper, I use a star card that increases the explosion radius of my grenades. These bonuses can be quite significant, but don't make you invincible. You never get to the point where a maxed player can taunt you with emotes while you empty clips into them. Star cards ONLY come from crates. There are a few crates you get from rewards, but mostly they're purchased from credits. They are NOT one time use, and any duplicates you might receive get converted into credits.
Every class (basic, upgraded, hero, etc) can equip up to 3 star cards as upgrades, but the slots for card 2 and card 3 are locked until the class reaches a certain class level.
Here is the kicker , the class level is determined by ONLY your collection of star cards for that class, so more/better star cards = higher level.
To upgrade a star card, there are 3 walls.
- Your player rank - a function of time.
- Class rank - based on your star card collection, which could at one point be bought with real money
- Crafting Parts - these come from crates, which could at one point be bought with real money
The highest tier of upgrade (purple) can only be crafted, so they will always require time to be put in to reach the appropriate player rank. But you still have to contend with walls 2 and 3. Note: these restrictions only apply to crafting cards. If you received blue cards in a crate, you can equip them immediately.
You can also purchase white cards with crafting parts. This helps you unlock your 3 star card slots per class. It's fairly easy to get to this point. I don't remember how many white cards were needed to unlock all 3 slots, but I know it was more than 3.
So if you can kind of see there, there is a path for you can spend cash to leap frog forward. I don't feel like it's night and day difference though. Maybe my tune will change when the game starts seeing more maxed out classes, but sometimes people are just significantly better than me so its hard to tell.
I've been playing for maybe a couple of hours every day or so and I'm at rank 14. At rank 15 you're able to upgrade from green to blue. I've only unlocked 1 hero (Iden, the cheapest), so I've spent most of my credits on crates. To this point, based on crafting parts and random cards received, I have been able to keep 1 (and almost a second) class current to my level. I do not have the resources to upgrade other classes, so I mostly stick to the two I have. I am enjoying the game just for the record.
