Total noob here

By Philn64, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi, I am getting the core set for Christmas and I am a total noob at this. Is there a guide for new players anywhere for standard builds/strategies? I want to get a couple more ships, but not break the bank as I’m not sure how often I’ll get to play since there doesn’t seem to be a huge community where I live. Thanks!

@Drasnighta I would assume to know where this has been discussed before he's very active in general on the forum.

So let's start off by asking do you already have a faction picked or are you waiting to see what playstyle you like?

Yeah, like @Noosh implied, almost any playstyle can be optimized enough to be workable. What are your tastes? Angry space triangles (my favorite)? Ackbar slashes? Wave after wave of squadrons?

It's always hard to tell people things like this, without a little extra knowledge.

I can safely say that if you play straight out of the starter. Don't get too disheartened the ships in the starter are imho the best to learn how to play. Yes the nebulon and the cr90 crumple like tin cans under fire, but they teach the importance of manuvering. Likewise the victory teaches the essentials of commands and the fundamentals of big ships. Also fighters!

But what to buy next to build 400pts lists gonna need a little more input.

I would say you should start familiarizing you with your options, personally I always build my fleet lists with fab's fleet generator because I am too lazy to keep track of how many I have of anything ( and unlike some people on here I do not own multiples of everything)

i'll just toss this here: http://armada.fabpsb.net/gindex.php

the core set/wave 1 fleet point max was 180 I believe, currently most lists are at 400

As others have stated the real question is where you want to go with it, how much you want to spend etc there are many great ships and upgrades and while you get a nebulon a CR90 and a victory class in the core set the expansions which contain the same do have some upgrades and titles you cannot get elsewhere.

the star wars armada wiki can give you great pointers in what expansions are in which waves and what is in them http://starwars-armada.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Armada_Wiki

there are also some great vids on youtube you can watch.

Play with the starter for at least two games. Watch at least 3 hours of games on youtube.

Imperial: ISD, Gladiator, squad pack.

Rebel: Nebulon B, Home one, Squads.

The greatest challenge early on is getting enough ships to build a 400 point fleet. If you are using only the core set, the amount of fleet points to build to will be 180 points for each side. The core set by itself is fun for a game or three, but there isn't enough variety there by itself. You're going to want to expand your collection. The goal early on should be to have enough ships and upgrades to get to 400-point fleets. How you reach that goal depends on a few things...

1) Are you the sole supplier of ships? This means you would have to provide enough ships to build TWO 400-point fleets. If you and someone else are both collecting to be able to play one another, then you only have to get enough ships to build one 400-point fleet. So that's an important consideration. If you're providing ships for both fleets, try to keep the number of ships for each faction equal as you start collecting.

2) What ships should you get? It is easy to get caught in the trap of trying to get ships that are strong and competitive. My advice is not to worry about that. Pretty much every ship is viable, and they all contain upgrade cards that are great. My only advice would be to NOT double up on expansions as you start out. You may want to have 2 MC30s eventually, but when you're building your collection you probably want to have multiple admirals to choose from. So...go for ships that you think looks cool and try to get a variety when you're just starting out.

One of the first things I would get (for EITHER faction) are the squadron packs. They greatly increase the variety of squadrons you'll have and they are inexpensive. Along with that, I would see about getting a big ship if possible. They are worth a lot of fleet points, so having a big ship in your fleet lets you get to 400 points more easily.

That's would I'd suggest if you're just starting out. Best of luck!

yeah if you want to go imperials definetly get an Imperial Star Destroyer.

Neb, Neb, Home One, really? What's this fleet do? Genuine curiosity here.

I'd get MC30 or AF2 with home one or neb with liberty, or just hammerheads and CR-90 and commit to MSU for a while. I do like your imperial picks.

A few links that might help get you started:

Thanks guys, a lot of info here. I’ll check out youtube and those links. Not sure what play style I like better or which faction, I’ll have to play both at first, so I’ll probably get one squad pack and one medium ship for each and go from there. Thanks again!

Typo

Getting a fleet builder will help too. you can view all of the ships on there and it'll give you a good direction to go in.

If you use android then google "armada fleets designer"
https://plus.google.com/communities/109814116029534233094

it's the best on android (and free).

I'm sure iphone has 1 or 2 but I've never been an apple kid. I'm sure there are some on here though that can point you in the right direction.

I only recently started with Armada myself, but found @Crabbok 's videos to be incredibly helpful:

You'll be able to find the Imperial version of the video in YouTube as well.

Personally, my first two purchases after the core set were the ISD and Arquitens for Imperials, and Liberty and MC30 for Rebels.

Ehh! Just don't be like me - buying in for both Rebels AND Imperials since Day 1 with ONLY 2 games on record - that's including the Learn to Play scenario!! You need to make sure you get to PLAY with what you've bought! Hehehehe.

Why are you on the forums when you should be watching everything @Crabbok has posted to YouTube? Start here .

I want to thank @Ardaedhel for the recommendation (also on behalf of @geek19 too) and let @Philn64 know that there's a lot on the blog, so take your time and cruise through the indices (upper right section) at your own pace. The links Ard gave are a good starting place, though.

These are great - I've been reading little else for the last few days.

Cannot Get Your Ship Out is an excellent source!

My only complaint is that if you read it, it might teach you how to counter my Arquitens - Conga Line!

What's the secret... Show up ? :)

Seriously, though, I've never seen an Arquitens do anything well. Not ever.

Maybe everybody else is just bad at them: what's your secret?

Hello everyone. Im also new to the armada. Today I've played my first game ever and already a 400 point one :) Of course i got decimated. I flew a list that i could make out of the things a i have (core set plus liberty) so i flew this:

http://armadawarlords.hivelabs.solutions/view_list.php?token=145992&key=d04d7d48ff95033d4ac30041598ebdfe

Against this:

http://armadawarlords.hivelabs.solutions/view_list.php?token=146626&key=51390e8f57af3a26ab6d4897c974c6fe

Basicly my nebulon exploded in turn 2 or 3, my cr90 also got taken down around turn 4 and my Mon Carren survived on 2 hull left. I dont know but propably i made a mistake that i turned away from my opponent ISD and VSD so for the rest of the game my front acr wasnt turned towards them but if i had turned to fight head on i probably would be demolished anyway. How should i fly agains that list and what should i change to take an mc30c with torpedo loadout into my list(this is my next planned ship to buy)? Maby something like this list:

Don't worry — you have plenty of time.

If you're looking for advice on this specific list, I recommend starting a thread in the "Fleet Builds" section. Just in the interest of keeping this thread clean-ish. :)
