If You Could Design 2018s X-Wing...

By GILLIES291, in X-Wing

If you were in charge of next years production what would you want to see? Individual expansion waves and Aces.

For me I would like simple three ship waves with two Aces packs and it would be the following:

Q2

Resistance A-Wing (A-wing with extra shields, tech slot boost for A-wings with an exclusive EPT, something like "Live for Speed, after executing a 5 straight maneuver, assign an evade token to your ship."

Imperial TIE Droid

2/2/2/2 stat line, PS 0, Cost of 10 for generic. New boost for generic swarms:

Linked Flight Systems, Modification, TIE only, When an allied ship with the same name at range 1-2 performs an action, this ship may also perform that action.

Scum

Mining Guild TIE

Basic TIE platform but with 180 firing arc and Ilicit slot and 1 less agility and hull.

Aces Pack - Heroes of the Rebellion

Scarif/Rebels pack:

U-Wing with new mod to be able to perform attacks out of arc and carry more crew as well as a Saw Gerrara and K2-SO crew.

Partisan X-Wing with Title and new Modifications/Droids to boost up our favourite X-wing. Perhaps allowing it to sacrifice a shield or agility to roll an extra red die.

Q4

Rebel

Prototype B-Wing, Similar to the excellent custom Aces pack I saw on this site. Hera as the ace pilot. B-Wing mod to be able to roll extra red dice and then receive a weapons disabled token. Title to be able to perform Talon or barrel rolls after completeing movements.

Imperial

Patrol Transport/Republic Gunship

180 degree firing arc, cheap crew carrier, reinforce action similar to Wookie Gunship.

Scum

Reprogramed Vulture Droid

Cheap swarm-style ship with a lot of green on their dial that has similar swarm tactics mod to copycat actions of other vulture Droids with different actions/upgrades depending on which version you bring.

Aces Pack - Defenders of Scarif

Imperial/Rebel

Zeta Class Cargo Shuttle

Rogue One Rebel title that gives this ship jam Action and swaps teams for three crew slots. Ability to carry teams for Imperial Version and the reinforce or recover action. Slow tanky transport.

And

TIE Reaper

Krennic and Deathtroopers crew, saw a great post about making these guys mobile Team transports and agree entirely.

And perhaps one one Pack that includes another Han Solo variant to go with he new movie, probably very scum/Rebel heavy which is why I'm hesitant on it. Let's focus on bringing Imperials and Swarms back.

Q2: New A-Wing, TIE FO Bomber, Zygerrian Transport

Q4: StealthX, TIE Reaper or Elite TIE/D, Mining Guild TIE

Aces packs: Imperials get Punisher and Lambda, Rebels get U-Wing and T-65.

Epic: Corvus dual faction pack.

Just for fun (no clue if it would be at all useful), maybe we could include a card like

Afterburner (Dual-sided)

Small ship only

Side A: You may reveal red maneuvers while stressed. When you reveal a red maneuver, treat that maneuver as white until after the Check Pilot Stress step and flip this card.

Side B: Treat all white maneuvers as red maneuvers. After you receive stress from performing a red maneuver, flip this card.

EDIT to update wording.

What I'd like to see: 65-series Xwing with Flight Astromech ace pack/epic pack, Bwing buff pack, Ewing fix pack, Tie Fighter/tie intercepter buff pack, Awing buff, punisher buff, Firespray buff, Tie Advanced buff... probably more.

How I'd do it:

Archangel/Darth Vader Comic Ace pack, including Tie Advance buffs, the evil droids, and a nonunique firespray title (like starviper mk2) that gives it barrel roll and the ability to take small ship upgrades.

TLJ Awing pack, with a back compatable Awing buff

Bwing/Ewing legends box

Heros of Scarif with Xwing and Uwing (including k2so pilot and a door gun buff)

Tie fighter/tie intercepter ace pack introducing orders as a slotless upgrade that gives all your ships a condition card. Most of which are imperial only.

Heroes of Scarif Scenario pack. Including Uwing Buff and alternate T65 stuff. We need some more Y pilots, too. Empire could get some Striker fun, maybe something for Tie l/n as well. And some good crew options, like Krennick etc.

Scum Epic Crusader class corvette. Containg more variety for Z95 and Y pilots.

Stuff that makes Tie Bombers and Punishers more fun. These are supposed to bomb, not to shot missiles.

Squadron or Doctrin cards making it interesting to fly GENERIC swarms instead of 2 or 3 uberheavy ships.

Q2

Imperial:

TIE Reaper
Agile ship, fits the niche of YT-2400 or the Jumpmaster (The intended one, not the actual one)

Has Krennic in it. And Krennic is awesome.

Rebel:

A-wing 2.0

Fancy stuff. Maybe has some new tech stuff for fancy maneuvering. Cannot equip the double EPT-s of the normal A-wing. Not unless TAP-s get to X1.

Scum:

Meh?. I like the Cloakshape fighters, they look cool. Maybe Slave II.

Epic:

Scum also gets their flippin Corvette, but only if it has Tyber Zann. Everybody has a price. This is mine.

Aces packs:

Ordnance Masterrace:

Gunboat and Punisher pack. Punishers get an EPT, and a fancy ability to wreck face. Gunboats get Marek Steele.

Q4

Imperial:

FO Bomber. Fancy new tech that adds some utility to bombs or rockets. Probably has a crew slot. Adds Imperial only crew.

Imperial Patrol Transport: Cheap carrier support, has turret. Adds Imperial only crews.

Rebel:

Some new ship from the TLJ. Maybe the transport from that 2 frames?

LET THEM HAVE THEIR NABOO stuff. Fine. But only because of Carrie. No more prequel ships for you! This is a one of a kind opportunity! It can even be good. Not too good obviously.

Scum:

Still don't care... Something to ferry Jabba around with some fun and janky Illicits.

Aphra's ship. It could come with a single Autzituck base for the black wookiee. Yaay. Aphra has an Imperial base as well. The Droids are Imperial or Scum only.

Aces pack:

Heroes of Scariff. But it's not called that, because... you'll see. HAVE YOUR T65 buff to shut you up. Also has a U-wing in it. It will be fixed somehow. K2SO crew and pilot. R1 pilots. ALso has Hera in an X-wing. That's why.

So....it never flips from side A?

You treat Red maneuvers as White, but that doesn't stop them from being Red maneuvers.

How would you recommend wording it?

Yes lets ramp up the wave frequency.. perhaps we can catch star trek attack-wing!

“After excuting a red maneuver, you may not receive a stress token, if you do, flip this card”

I really, really want to see Rogue Squadron have a presence in the game. With so many other old EU characters, it feels like a glaring omission to not have them. And it would be the perfect way to get new title cards out for the T-65.

- Corran Horn (PS8)

Same ability

- Ooryl Qyrgg (PS7)

Something that conveys generosity/teamwork. Sharing target locks/focus tokens (he shared his targeting data with Corran during a training mission, if I remember right)

- Rogue Squadron Pilot with EPT

- "Whistler" Astromech

That's just off the top of my head.

Other way around. Wedge had Whistler send Corran's targeting data to everyone else.

I've always liked Ooryl's personality, but as a pilot, the main things that stuck out to me were his accuracy (tended to take one-shot-one-hit rather than spray-and-pray) and his survivability (different physiology meant he could survive harsh conditions and injuries that would kill others).

How would you best portray that, though?

You're right. It's been a while :P

Whistler's upgrade card would be more suited to that kind of effect then.

You could go 2 general directions for Ooryl;

1) Accuracy

When attacking, if you have a focus token, you may re-roll one of your dice.

A bit of action efficiency. Almost Predator, but you still have to plan your move and avoid losing your action step.

Or;

When attacking, if you are not stressed you may receive 1 stress token to change up to 2 of your *blank* results to *eyeball* results.

2) Durability

Crit mitigation (if it's a pilot crit).

Or something similar to Tel Trevura or Countdown's ability.

It's interesting to hypothesize based on their traits :)

Even if I'm operating on one hour's sleep right now :P

Thinking about the Whistler thing, I know Wedge adding twists to the training exercises always had a point; but sometimes I got the feeling that he was more like Wes Janson than he may have liked, and just really enjoyed messing with his squadron.

Great list!

Also really like the Tybe Zann idea!

Imagine a Forces of Corruption epic pack:

Tyber Zann crew that lets you remove an enemy non-unique Crew similar to Fett, except that he steals the upgrade and puts it on his ship in place of Zann. Buzz Droid Torpedos, Defoliators that can be discarded to flip face down illicits back up.

Ships:

EPIC: (any of he following)

And could come paired with either the Rihkxyrk Assault Fighter or a Skipray Blastboat

The Ark Angel 1 or 2

Ark_angel.jpg

Wave A:

  • Resistance A-Wing. Kinda obligatory. I kinda like the Bullseye arc idea I've seen tossed around for them. If the titles overlap with the original, I'd also add a missile-based title, so an A-Wing could have the option of more Elites, or missiles which aren't overpriced. $15 small.
  • TIE Reaper. A low-damage shuttle-like ship which can really fly. The second large base with an innate Boost? $30 Large.
  • Ark Angel (Mostly Scum, but also with an Imperial Aphra token/pilot, and a Black Krrsantan Scum Auzituck token/pilot. I'd make it a high-points large base; well kitted it be in the mid 60s. Scum don't have a ship in that price range yet. Either a mobile-arc ship, or a turret with something to make arc matter, like 2 die PWT + Cannon. The $40 Large of the wave)
  • Y-Wing 2.0 (New paint job on an old ship, this would be a joint Scum/Rebel expansion, with 4 pilots for each faction, and lots of goodies. Maybe a new, more fair range 2-3 turret so that the TLT can be nerfed into the ground. It'd be the "$20 MSRP Small" blister for the wave, due to the quantity of cardboard. I think it's probably time to start having new releases of old ships, rather than only scrape the edges of the expanded universe for stuff.)

New Product: Campaign Box:

  • Lothal to Scarrif: Birth of a Rebellion. This would be a Most-Wanted or bigger size thing (40-60 MSRP), with 2-3 ships (Phoenix or Partisan painted X-Wing, perhaps a protectorate Starfighter, something Imperial), but full of scenarios based on Rebels and Rogue One, rules for a long-term campaign, and with fix cards for the X-Wing at least, but also pilots and tokens for all sorts of ships like A-Wings, U-Wings, TIE Strikers, regular TIEs, TIE Advanced Prototypes, and so forth. Can you see a theme here? I want FFG to increase the cardboard-to-ship ratios.
  • This would be followed over the next two years with things like "Yavin to Endor: Fall of an Empire" (B-Wings and Interceptors in the box) and "Jakku to [???]: The Threat of the First Order" (TIE/FO, TIE/SF, T-70). One big campaign box per year or so.

Epic:

  • Some kind of Scum corvette. Possibly Jabba's Star Jewel, and include a Z-95. I firmly believe all Epic releases should include a non-Epic ship.

Wave B:

  • First Order TIE Bomber. Baseline upgrade bar would be Crew, Torpedo, Missile, Bomb, Tech, Tech. The tech slots would add munitions flexibility, including "Variable Warhead Munitions" which can become any Torpedo/Missile/Bomb upgrade, chosen after/when ships are placed. $15 Small.
  • E-Wing 2.0 maybe?
  • Eh.
  • Hrm.
  • I'm sure there are more ships worth including, but I don't have too many favs out there which aren't in the game.

However: Big themes: [1] Expansions with higher cardbaord counts. Cross-faction pilots like Nym. More with 6 pilots for the same faction in one expansion. Give new tokens/pilots for older ships, almost like how the Nashta Pup worked. Bigger "Most Wanted" style expansions which have lots of cardboard for old ships not included. Folks don't really need to go buy more U-Wing models, so fix it in a Campaign box (I like making the U cheaper and taking away a primary weapon die--I don't think it needs a turret). [2] Include an "old expansion 2.0" in each wave, with new tricks and pilots and such for an old ship. This will keep iconic designs fresh, and we won't have to have as many unfamiliar ships each wave. I think I'd kinda prefer that to an "aces pack."

Do they have any more ships they could make? Well I guess with discovery they are getting more source materials but I thought the Star Trek line was exhausted for them.

The only thing I ask for 2018 is a campaign box.

And Blue Squadron (from Rogue One) ace pack.

Heck, if both where in the same box, even better.

Imagine a campaign box with this:

  • several interconnected missions: versus (Corellian Conflict style) ,against a "Dungeon Master" (Imperial Assault style) or cooperative (Heroes of the Aturi Cluster style).
  • a Blue Squadron X-Wing, with 4 new pilot s and a X-Wing title (fix).
  • a Blue (or Grey) Squadron Y-Wing, with 4 new pilots (this time they would have EPT slots).
  • K-2SO (as U-Wing pilot and/or crew)
  • a repainted TIE Striker (with a title or modification that game it bombs, like they should have), with 4 new pilots.
  • a repainted TIE Fighter (maybe with blood stripes) with new pilots.
  • another repainted TIE Fighter or a repainted TIE Bomber (with new pilots and a TIE/sa title focused on bombs)
  • heck they didn't even need to include the actual minis - just the cards is fine.

Of course, instead of the Scarif themed pack, it could be Partisans vs. Inferno Squadron (like in the novel Battlefront II: Inferno Squad ). But those (specially the Partisan X-Wing) I would want an official mini.

Version 2.0

Every game mechanic is reevaluated including large ship repositioning, munitions, primary weapon turrets, etc, and and every ship is rebuilt with a holistic take on actions, pricing, and maneuvers. Give the whole thing a 6 month public beta before finalization, and release it by December.

As of now FFG needs to be refocusing on older ships that haven't been touched on in a while instead of some of the ones that are popular right now. Here are some ways I would do this:

Heroes of Scarif Aces box like everyone is saying with all the pilots from Blue Squadron, including another X-Wing and Y-wing mini.

Rebels Series Fighter Boxes, encompassing all the different Pilots of the show in a Rebels and Imperials set. The Rebels set would include Hera in an A-wing and X-wing, Sabine in an A-wing, and Ezra in a Y-wing plus a few more prominent pilots that have shown up in the show like Phoenix Squadron Pilots as a PS2 A-wing at 18 points, a Green Group Y-wing from the Siege of Atollon at PS3, and a Phoenix Squadron X-wing at PS3 as well. For the Imperials side it would include Commander Skerric in an Interceptor and Defender, plus the rest of the Inquisitors that have appeared in the show, and maybe a Seventh Fleet Pilot at PS4 with an EPT giving Thrawns elite pilots some stage light. These would also include various crew and upgrade cards with certain important characters from the show.

The Resistance or New Republic A-wing is going to be an expansion of course, plus the FO TIE Bomber.

They should also start investing in more ships from the Edge of the Empire RPG for scum such as the Cloakshape fighter and possibly the Consular Class Cruiser as a potential second Scum Epic ship.

Honestly though as you can tell I would love to see more themed boxes instead of the bland expansion packs, if they did that along with creating campaign boxes as they did with Armada I think casual play would become a lot more interesting.

Awesome ideas +1

more campaign stuff!

Q2: The pseudo Prequel wave: N1 for Rebels, V-Wing for Imperials, and Bulballab-22 for Scum

Q4: A Rebels wave: Sentinel-class Shuttle (with Hondo cross over for Scum), Bladewing buff for Rebel b-wing, and Mining Guild TIE for Scum

Aces packs: Battle of Scarif (X- and Y-Wing fixes/buffs)

Epic: Hammerhead corvette

****

And, if they are unwilling to get a campaign done, at the very least a Narrative Boxed Set:

Miniature = Zeta-class shuttle (Imperial with cross-fraction to Rogue One)

Also includes:

Shuttle Tydirium pilot cards

More Y-Wing pilots

Phoenix Squadron A-Wing pilots

Blue Squadron X-Wing Pilots (generic and aces)

Pilots for U-Wing and X-wing to add Saw's Partisan fighters

More Inquisitors for the TAP

Scythe Squadron pilots for the TIE/ln

Etc.

Basically, a crap ton of cardboard for ships that really don't need a model rerelease but have gaping holes in stuff that should be in the game for the sake of playing the movies.
