Amanda in the Matrix and Trish's Focus Freeze

By Flamethrower50, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Against Yibb-Tstll and Tulzcha, Amanda drew Persuade and Mental Fortitude to start. She also started with Forced Learning. The skill she chose from that was Martial Arts, which would lead every nerd this side of the Prime Meridian (that is to say all of them) to think "I know Kung Fu." She proceeded to live up to that statement, destroying a number of monsters and saving the game.

Trish passed her personal story due to an early cult encounter, and quickly accumulated corruptions (and money). Near the end, she drew Mental Paralysis, the corruption that makes you skip your upkeep. She also had Primal Surge on the opposite pattern, the corruption that lets you move one slider three spaces.

At first glance, Mental Paralysis seems to really suck for Trish, as you wouldn't be able to use her focus ability. But on a closer reading of Trish's ability, it all happens in the upkeep. You don't move her sliders at all from the last turn. Which can be good or bad.

Now, with Primal Surge, she was able to adjust her sliders so that everything was maximized. Yeah, she was probably going to die from corruptions soon, but in the meantime she was awesome. Go Trish!

Beautiful, beautiful combo. Although, it does seem a bit rare to pull off. So if the spy has mental paralysis and experience primal surges, she can be the strongest character in the game? How odd.

"I forgot how to suck! Trish SMASH!"

It's even more rare than that, because you have to have the appropriate movement pattern come up (circle-square-diamond). In the game in question, I almost had all monsters moving every turn, which is how she got about 10-15 corruptions in the first place. Corruptions can really help make an uber-character, sometimes. Just don't get devoured by Vessel of the Mythos! Or inadvertently end the game by drawing all of the corruption cards. That would be sad.

No. Not buyin' it. This is the same mentality that uses "skip Upkeep" to get out of rolling for Blessings and Retainers.

Nothing...NOTHING...will prevent Trish from resetting her sliders every turn. No, of course I don't have anything to back that up. Of course that combo slides neatly into the B&W rules. But ANYTHING that keeps Trish COMPLETELY MAXED OUT for even ONE turn is WRONG. And you all know it too.

That said...rolling on the floor, Flamethrower! partido_risa.gif A most uproarious find! Using the Cult against itself, indeed.

Gentlemen, I think we've found a use for the Cult of the Thousand membership.

I respect your position. And I would still roll for blessings and retainers under Mental Paralysis. However, do you feel as though Mental Paralysis will completely gut Trish's ability to do anything? That's not the idea. Mental Paralysis is there to cut off your focus and keep you from refreshing your items. Independant of Primal Surge, it makes perfect sense to me that Mental Paralysis keeps her sliders in the same position. I'm confidant that Trish could play a hundred more corruption-heavy games and never see that combo. So, letting it happen seems... fine.
