Bodhi Rook and target locks

By Stoneface, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Bodhi's card says "When you acquire a Target Lock you may target lock an enemy ship within range 1-3 of any friendly ship". Does this mean Bodhi has to be within Range 1-3 of the friendly ship? Or can he be greater than R3 from the friendly? His card does say any friendly ship.

Also, can Bodhi's ability be used to circumvent the requirement of Long Range Scanners to be range 3 or greater to acquire a Target Lock on an enemy ship? For example, the ship with Bodhi and LRS is R2 from an enemy ship and R3 from a friendly that's R3 from the enemy ship. Could Bodhi lock on to the enemy ship?

It sounds to me like any friendly ship in the play area, though I'm not sure how this would work with LRS

The enemy has to be at range 1-3 of the friendly, not Bodhi. Bodhi can be anywhere.

And no, it doesn't override LRS, because cannot > may.

Thanks for the reply. I was curious about Bodhi' s range limitation because of how "acquire a Target Lock" is defined. Sort of figured the his ability may not circumvent the LRS restriction but better to ask.

Thanks again.

You can use LRS on Bodhi, but it literally kill his pilote ability... there is no situation where using his ability would give a lock that LRS would have not been able.

My thinking on this was if he was less than R3 from an enemy ship, where LRS wouldn't work, could he use his ability through another friendly ship. But as Spaceinvader pointed out can't beats may.

I'm toying with a build to beat a specific person, not something very competitive.

But sometimes, the most satisfying.

Truer words were never spoken, or in this case, written.

No matter which Bodhi Rook you're using Long-Range Scanners prevents the acquisition of a target lock on a ship at Range 1-2 of your ship (please note Bodhi Rook [pilot] himself cannot equip LRS due to the lack of a missile upgrade slot). Generally speaking if Bodhi [pilot] is in the squad there's not a huge need for LRS in the list except for picking up that turn 1 TL. Most importantly: if you're using the Bodhi [crew] ability to pick up a TL because your ship is not within R3 of the enemy then you could've gotten the TL anyway with LRS and have thus wasted both 1 squad point and a crew slot...

The only way you can get Bodhi and LRS together is on a K-Wing due to the Missile and Torpedo requirement. Even then, its kind if pointless.

Or Rebel Captain Nym without the Havoc title...don't know who would do that, but it is technically possible...
