Throwing a PC

By Randy G, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have been wondering what would be the appropriate skill to use when tossing someone? Thrown weapons falls under Ranged (L) but that doesn't seem right for tossing a meat-bag. And I'm not talking about throwing an enemy, I'm more looking for throwing am ally who can't jump that far, an unconscious individual, etc.

And what if you used them as a weapon? I.e. throw a fallen character into an advancing group to show them down?

Athletics.

You could also do a ranged skill but use brawn instead of agility as base

Sounds like a clear case for athletics.

Or brawl. Depends on goal

Indeed.

Throw someone as far or high as possible? Athletics.

Throw someone as hard as possible into something, in order to do damage? Brawl.

Throw someone with great precision (for whatever reason)? Ranged, probably heavy, unless you're tossing someone small, like an ewok. And who wouldn't want to toss an ewok?

True, I was only thinking towards the non-combat related part. Brawl seems to be a clear choice if you actually want to slam someone.

Well, I'd say it all depends on intent an consent; what is the projector intending and what is the projectile consenting to.

1) Intent: covering distance; consent: Yes => Athletics,

2) intent: covering distance; consent: No => Brawl,

3) intent: hitting a target to inflict damage, consent: Yes => Heavy Ranged,

4) intent: hitting a target to inflict damage, consent: No => Brawl.

The first alternative is not directly combat-related, so no combat skill involved, i.e. Athletics; in the second case, overcoming the projectiles unwillingness is the far more difficult task, therefore Brawl; thirdly, directly combat-related (combat skill) and most people need both hands for tossing someone else, Heavy Ranged; lastly, the projectile's opposition (Brawl) is the harder obstacle, for what it's worth.

I might elaborate on my take on how to handle a person as an improvised thrown weapon later today in an edit, but I've got to go (brood is screaming for food).

Sorry, first edit due to Copy/Paste Error.

In our case we called it a gravball special. Seemed like a goid way to get someone out to long range in one go.

Even an Ewok would be large enough and heavy enough to be the same "skill" as any other person.

I apologize for my failed attempt at humor.

Way late, but as a follow - up query:

A PC or NPC is successfully thrown, do they (The throwee) now make a fall check too avoid taking damage? Assuming the character is conscious.

Depends on the kind of throw. If you are used as a ballistic missile against Stormtroopers, I don't see a roll to reduce damage making sense. Got tossed off of a balcony down to the street below? Same as a falling damage roll.

Also, for tossing someone in a fight who is fighting back, I'd make it a contested Brawl vs Brawl/Athletics/Acrobatics check (whichever is the best for the target) as they try to fight back/slip away from your grab.

+1 for Athletics. Brawl could work as a secondary choice, I think.

Nobody tosses a dwarf!

i would say against someone who doesn't want to be thrown, a brawl combat check with "aiming at a partiucular bodypart" aim maneouvre, so add 2 setback, or can take 2 strain to remove 1.

against a willing throwee, athletics check, difficulty based on difference in brawn rating (same = average, +1 or more = easy, -1/2/3 = hard/daunting/impossible). range would be short as standard, spend advantage to increase range thrown.
