What is it about the word recover that is so challenging for people?

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing

I am not completely clear why people would spend all sorts of time trying to put upgrades on a y-wing thinking that you can use the new Chopper card to add Shields above what you start with on the card.

It says recover.

Recover means to regain something that was lost.

Regain something that was lost.

Like seriously. Stop it.

Lol... I think the better part is that some people have said that equipped doesn't specify your ship or even that specific ship. Yup, Chop just flied over and rips off the enemies autothrusters to overdrive your shields. Sounds about right.

and why not? he is chopper after all, I mean he can do that on the show right

So what your saying is. When I play an x-wing. And I have chopper I can’t go above my shield stat? What??? I don’t get it.

It's like people literally can change the language to whatever they want.

This is why I stay out of the rules forum - too many people who think being obtuse is the same thing as being clever.

In Shyriiwook. Recover means more. That’s why people are getting confused.

Well, it doesn't actually specify what ship the upgrade is equipped on. The 'equipped' keyword just means that it has to be on a ship. I hope it's going to be corrected before release, because my FLGS is going to take that interpretation. I just know it.

On the same train of thought, you'd think 'replenish' means 'to fill again', but it has an equally valid meaning, 'to fill'. I'm not sure if the same can technically be applied to the word Recover, but it's in the realm of possibility.

To be fair, this sounds totally like something chopper would do …

… and actually DID in the show as well. :P

I'm more curious how he could possibly manage to remove the title from a ship, or EPTs for that matter!

"Oh, no! Chopper showed up, and suddenly I'm no longer an Opportunist!"

Counceling.

Or shock therapy, whichever is more effective:

Taking upgrades off enemy ships would be nasty ? The new rebel meta’s just gonna be low-PS Choppers trying to ditch the enemy Chopper first, and the only counter would be flying naked squads ?

But I’m certain that’s not what is meant, or there would be lots of restrictions to it. Hopefully it’ll be clarified quickly, or people will be kind enough to just use logic.

Either way, I don’t think most people have taken it as having extra shields in that way. Regen will end up counting the same, though, when it comes down to it.

Yes of course it does, but if that's what the FAQ reads I can only imagine the sheer volume of HATE that will be generated when an Astromech is promoted to Uber Fett.

I really want this because of feels.

But you're right and I hate you for it.

Something to consider is that these cards are probably written in American English and then translated into the required languages. A direct translation may be the source of some of the confusion.

A while back these was a thread comment from a player in Germany about the Howlrunner card. When translated into German, it came out as screamer -. I forget the exact phrase but while technically accurate was a little bizarre.

I bet worlds is a really confusing event.

Thats Kreischläufer, which suggests it would be Screamrunner if you translate it backwards. This weird translation is not on the German publisher, though. A Howlrunner is some kind of animal in universe. When the name of this animal is used, lucasfilm demands coherent naming. Since it has been translated weirdly at some point in the past, all publications need to stick to that name.

This is also why after the Disney aquisition reprints gave us X-Flügler and TIE-Jäger when we used to have X-Wings and TIE-Fighters. Actually all Alphabet-Wings are becoming Alphabet-Flügler with their new reprints.

I'm making the assumption that all the players can speak and understand the English-language to varying degrees. I think the biggest problems would be with, I think they're called idioms.

Back in the days of the Commodore C64, there was an article about a guy writing a translation program that would do English-Russian and Russian-English translations. He was pretty happy with it until he typed in the phrase "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak". After taking it into Russian and back into English he got back, "The vodka is okay but the meat is spoiled". Hence the problem of hearing English and mentally translating it into your native tongue.

From the core set rules under the heading marked "SHIELDS".

Quote

Shields allow a ship to suffer damage without the risk of being dealt faceup Damage cards. The blue number on a Ship card is the ship’s shield value, indicating how many shield tokens to place on the Ship card during setup.

• A ship cannot have more shield tokens than its shield value. If a ship has a number of shield tokens equal to its shield value, it cannot recover shields.
