Critical Injury Question

By Jmanawesmazing, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Question; Do critical injuries apply to NPCs? I can only find the it for PCs.

Sort of. Critical Injuries apply to Rival- and Nemesis-level NPCs. However, they do not apply to Minions. When you inflict a Critical Injury on a Minion, you add damage equal to that minions' Wound Threshold. And because you need to do at least 1 wound to inflict a crit, that means that you're guaranteed to incapacitate at least one minion by doing so. Probably more, depending on the total damage your base attack did!

For Rivals and Nemesis yes! Minions get killed....

Thank you

My players do enjoy rolling on the table to see which crit took out each minion. Makes for some laughs when a Stormtrooper is Hamstrung to death.

Technically minions are removed from the fight. The final disposition of a given minion is up to the GM.

I find lots of people overlook or misread the 'taken out' phrase and substitute 'killed,' although in this case - critical injuries from combat - the core book uses the phrase 'killed.'

Which I hate.

Taken out is much better, more fitting with the game system, more fitting to Star Wars, etc...

I'm not positive if this is strictly RAW or merely the likely RAI as stun only weapons do not have a Crit Value, but my interpretation has always been that stun weapons and weapons set to stun or to do stun damage cannot crit, as crits are serious injuries, and the whole point of inflicting strain damage is to avoid that (The GM could use a despair to inflict a crit on someone the PCs were trying to capture unharmed, through a weapon malfunction of some kind, but I think that would be the only exception).

Critical hits are the choice of the shooter so I've never felt the need to insert fiat and say Stun shots can't crit. I mean if the PC or the GM are using Stun setting it's sort of a given they aren't looking to kill the target, since Stun affects Strain, and the crits are the shooter's choice, why does their need to be a 'it can't' rule?

FWIW, some stun-only weapons do have Crit ratings: Subduer-9 Riot Blaster, AJ-23 Concussive Rifle, SakTek D-29 Repulsor Rifle, Borstel Neuronic Lash, Drall Flashstick, etc. Since it would've been easy to insert a "Critical Rating becomes --" line into the description of Stun Setting, I assume it's purposeful that blasters can crit while on stun.

Page 218 of the Core rulebook explains how strain damage and crits interact. You absolutely can trigger them.
