How useful is Dormitz?

By Ronu, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I am looking into getting the Upsilon Shuttle. Problem I am having is the cost vs benefits of the ships abilities and PS.

So as I’m looking at it I see either a well built Shuttle and some very thin support ships or some moderately good ships but the shuttle is thin. Dormitz seems the most interesting with ship positions so far up if you can find a way to make use of it. But how advantageous is it really? Who can/ do you run with this thing?

I personally run kylo adaptability with hux/fleet officer, PA, and fire control system. Thinking about adding ion projector. The point is to hand out focus like candy and get in the way and use the big gun to take people down. I fly with expertise, sensor cluster, backdraft and another cheap pocket ace/ soon to be Nu Gunboat.

Not going to lie. The Upsilon is not a super competitive ship. Its basically the same as the Lambda but with 1 extra attack, +1 hull & +1 shield. Also it has coordinate (which can be fun, especially with high PS aces, and is best on Stridan); BUT I wouldn't say it 'makes' the ship.

Its biggest problem is keeping stuff inside its firing arc. There are bound to be multiple turns per game where it doesn't get to shoot. To lessen this problem, there are two upgrade cards, and it MUST have one or the other: engine upgrade (to turn around faster) OR electronic baffle (to stop move multiple turns in a row and thereby keep things in arc).

In order to do even remotely well with it, you have to build the list around it (or build the Upsilon around the other ships you plan to use in the list). It does have a lot of options, fortunately, but can get expensive fast. The most successful builds I've seen either use Kylo Ren as pilot with VI + engine + FCS + various crew; or use it in a support role with any of the other pilots (depending on what its supporting or supposed to be doing).

I wouldn't say Dormitz is amazing, but it can work with hard hitting ships that can take advantage of starting closer to the enemy. Its a gimmick though, and as such, it will do well against players that are not smart enough to counter it, but do poorly against those who know its weaknesses.

The main problem, as FGD and others have said, it will cost you almost half your list (Starbase Killer Pilot is 30p naked) so it HAS to contribute in combat, not just be a support ship.

And as @blade_mercurial have said is not a nimble ship, so it's difficult to keep things on arc...

I have some lists with Stridan (the most interesting pilot for me) as a support.

One with Stridan+Systems Officer, to keep it thin at 34. Just coordinating, and trying to do green moves to pass TLs.

Other variations have Fleet Officer/General Hux+Electronic Baffle.
