I thought you had to make it to stage 2 before being eligible for the hyperspace qual?

Nope, anyone can join. Also there is one Friday at PAX. If you are in stage 3 and get knocked out you can join straight into the hyper space qualifier and be given byes to get you up to speed.

Cool. Guess that means I am playing both days no matter what then. Awesome! I was worried I'd need to find things to do on Saturday at Adepticon if I didn't make it far enough to qualify for hyperspace.

Here you go:

Kublacon registration

FYI there will be a Hyperspace Qualifier, open to everyone, on Sunday at the same time as round 3 of the System Open.

They’re reserving the one on Sunday for the people that drop Day 2. Friday is open to everyone. I got an email refunding my money saying this after I signed up that day.

I think the confusion here might be that PAX Unplugged and Adepticon are three day events, where most of the System Opens will be two day events. The System Opens that are part of a three-day event look like they'll be featuring Hyperspace Qualifiers, Hangar Bays (and other events like Space Race at Adepticon) that will be open to those not participating in the System Open itself, so they have seperate entry fees.

From the https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017/11/13/2018-system-open-briefing/ article:

"At least one Hangar Bay side event will be scheduled to accommodate System Open participants who do not progress from Stage 1 to Stage 2. System Open participants who join a Hangar Bay event at this point will receive an additional prize."

and

"Some venues - hosting events that include days without main event stages—may run more than one Hyperspace Qualifier."

Now, all that said, I know they charged for Hangar Bay and Elite Hangar Bay events at UK Nationals this year, but they did have a seperate ticket-based prize structure in place there.

Yeah it depends on the event and how their days line up. I just saw that he linked Kublicon and I happen to have signed up for the one on Sunday, so I knew they were reserving it for that one.

Thanks for that @Tbetts94 , that's really helpful information. I'm guessing the Hyperspace Qualifier on Friday at Kublicon is open to all comers at the shown price then, before the System Open itself starts on the Saturday.

Yeah this was what I was curious about in the other thread. I honestly just want to be able to participate in a full Hyperspace Qualifier because just participating, at the end of each round, you get those Bounty Hunter Alt Art cards. If I somehow go undefeated, BONUS, I get an invitation to Coruscant.

Yeah, you get a pair of the Target Lock tokens as well on entry according to the article. Obviously progressing to Phase 3 would be the perfect scenario, but it's really nice to see there's so much to play for even if you don't make the cut. Whether you have to pay extra for the Hangar Bay and Hyperspace Qualifier if you've were already registered for the System Open itself... well, I guess we'll have to wait for the official word on that.

@RStan @FTS Gecko @T70 Driver

This is what Kublacon sent me:

Event Name: KublaCon Game Convention / Memorial Day Weekend 2018
Organizer: KublaCon
Order Number: 697706521
Refund Amount: $16.82 (Partial Refund)
Note: We were told by FFG and Cascade Games to hold the Hyperspace Qualifier on Sunday for those who scrub out of the System Open. You can still play in the Friday Hyperspace Qualifier if you want. You will need to buy that one separately.

@Tbetts94 thank you for showing us that. That's kinda what I expected. You can pay for the first Hyperspace Qualifier separately before the event, but for the Stage 3 day Hyperspace Qualifier, they aren't making anyone pay for that (at least for now). I kinda already planned for this, but it's good to see it's "confirmed" to some degree.

Yeah, my original plan was to go up to San Francisco with the fiancé and see San Francisco Friday, play Saturday, play only the three rounds of the qualifier Sunday and then see San Francisco some more with her. Now I gotta hope I do good on Saturday and just automatically get those prizes.

I think that they mean they are waiting to sell registration until they see total reg for Saturday and then will open up the remaining spots (less the amount of day 2 people) to the public. Maybe.

So for Adepticon, i buy my con ticket, my system open entry, and my hanger bay entry for if I do not make it to stage 2. Do I need to register for day 2 hyperspace (happening during stage 3) or is that covered?

Can I get my hanger bay entry back if I make the stage 2 cut and therefore don't fly in it? Or at the very least do I get the participant swag of hanger bay even if I don't play but did pay?

Usually Hangar Bay isn't a paid-for thing, it's just run alongside for those who drop. Is it listed as a purchase thing for Adepticon/US ones?

Last two run in the UK you just buy your ticket for the Open and that covers everything X-Wing.

Yeah it's listed as pay for at Adepticon. Did not look at other US ones since the one I am going to is Adepticon based on geography. Much easier to go there than others.

Confirmed by Alex Watkins in Facebook, there will be no Open in Spain this time. I can't say I'm thrilled by the decision.

Quote

Hello X-Wing players.

I have had a few messages and comments about Spain not getting one of the 6 System Opens available to Europe in 2018. I understand that Spanish players will be upset by this, but I want to clear up a few points and explain the decision processes when it comes to deciding where System Opens go. I try to be as open as I can about things where I can be, but ultimately I have 6 events and many more countries that would like an System Open.

The System Open is an Open event designed to be open to all players regardless of their ability or experience. The emphasis on these events is inclusivity, encouragement of new players to the tournament scene and the growth of player bases. As such it is important to make sure that the locations of these events vary over time to cover as much of Europe as possible. Some countries will get opens more often than others. If a country did not get one this year, it does not mean they will not get one next year. Likewise, countries getting them this year will not automatically get one next year.

When deciding where to place these events a lot of factors are considered including, but not exclusive to, player requests, areas of opportunity to grow the game and the community, revisiting past countries and ease of access. As such, after looking at the options I had available to me earlier in 2017, I made the decision that only two of the three countries that had a System Open in 2017 will get a System Open in 2018. Spain was the one that would not. Believe me when I say that this decision was not taken lightly. Sometimes I must make decisions that are hard and sometimes I must make decisions that will be unpopular in some places. It is the nature of my role and the fact that not everyone can have everything all the time. I would love to try and please everyone, but when you attempt to do that you run the extremely high risk of pleasing nobody.

The other 3 countries that were selected will be fully announced as I confirm the details with the local organised play teams. Once we can talk about them they will appear on the FFG website alongside the three already announced, Germany, Italy and the UK.

Ticketing sites for these events will be going live soon and once they are ready I will share with you all the websites as well the when the tickets will go on sale. For now, head to the event pages I have set up on Facebook for updates.

Thanks

Real Xwing fans listen to podcasts and should have known awhile ago that PAX Unplugged had one. But yeah, the announcement for that should have came a lot sooner.

Yes. how dare I have too much of a life and a career to pay for this hobby. That I don't have time to waste on podcasts. -_-

BTW, anyone else dislike the new format which requires you to go 2-1 at least in stage one or you will not make it to stage 2. Now getting into the cut only with a 5-1 seems fine, but getting relegated to the hangar bay tournament just after 3 games seems a little depressing. :)

I'm not a fan either

With the fact that you can get most of the upper prizes the next day just for playing a few games (not even winning them) makes it a bit better. You'll still get 12 games minimum over the two days no matter how well or badly you do.

It's why even though the format has changed, I like the Open Series the best. Lots of prizes, lots of games. Doesn't matter too much if you do badly, it's just a great weekend of fun with your fav game.

Does not bother me too much. Never gone to a system open, but when I can get all the swag but the top acrylics without playing in stage 2 or 3 (hanger bay and hyperspace qualifier instead) and I am playing xwing the whole time, I am pretty happy.

Speaking of swag, have they announce what you actually get in the hangar bay and hyperspace qualifier ?

Yes, it was in the same article as the main prizes.

Hanger bay participant gets the aurebesh dual side resistance sympathizer / mandalorian mercenary alt art. Win two games get a second copy. You can earn the lothal rebel/Baron of the empire too but they didn't say how to earn in hanger bay

Hyperspace qual ... Game 1 participant gets alt art boba, game 2 participate get bossk and then 3 and 4 are IG88 and Dengar. Basically you get everything but the chance for the top acrylic prizes.... Just for playing.
