Hello, I have a question about the effects critical. if I have a ship equipped with a upgrade card amending the effect critical (for example: Assault Concussion Missiles: "Black (critical logo): each Hull zone adjacent to the defending Hull zone suffers 1 damage.").
The ship with that improvement could not solve a normal critical effect? Is it not possible to not use the improvement to perform the critical effect by default?
Thanks.
Non normal critical effect
You can always choose to attempt to resolve the Default.
It is part of the rules. Consider it inherent to every ship.
Upgrade cards provide additional options to resolve instead.
Generally, the question is, though - if you are paying for a critical upgrade effect, and can resolve it, why are you not?
I guess The APT effect in general is always better than the default..
But others can be situationally better or no effect, I guess.
Regardless, default is always an option.

You don't.
You have a card offering you an additional critical effect. Now, when you resolve a critical effect, you may choose any one of the options available to you. You may choose the Default Critical Effect, or the ACM Critical effect, or any other critical effect that you have access to.

I might find myself wanting to do the face up damage card rather than chewing up shields a bit more. particularly if playing Precision Strikes, or if I'm desperate to do something to disrupt the enemy more than just damage. Having Doddanna might make me consider the face up card.

Yeah, I was trying to say that
APT
is
always
better than Default if you have the upgrade and black. Because it counts for precision strike (its a face up card dealt by the attack), and is an additional damage card over the damage you roll, whereas the default is
inclusive
of the damage you roll...
ACM, ICB, NK7 - those are all situational.
Heck, even XX9 with only 1 damage hitting hull is
technically
better than the Default, because it can't be countered with a Contain token.

I always forget about that.
