Vader, Quickdraw , And? Need advice ...

By IgotTargetlocked, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey, Flew this at a local q 3 kit event.

Got my "#€%" handed to me

Vader

Vi, Harpoons, ATC, Chips, Titel

Quickdraw

Vi, Harpoons, Titel, FCS, Titel, Pattern Analyzer, LW

Sienar Specialist

TLT , LW

The aggressor didn't do much, and i managed to get rly poor results out of the Harpoons..

Im thinking about removing Vader , Adding a Palpshuttel and Incqusitor instead, With harpoons,

Since he has Autotrusters..

What do you think?

Im thinking about trying to get the points for a Tractorbeam for the Lambda.

this is what I'm currently working on

Quickdraw.

Vi, Harpoons, Titel, Primed Thrusters , LW, Titel. Fcs, (39 )

The Inqiusitor

Ptl, Titel, Autotrusters (31)

Omicron Pilot,

Collision detector, Tractror beam , Emperor Palpatine (30)

Build your Vader and QD to the hilt (VI, Engine, Harpoon, Title, ATC for Vader, VI, Harpoon, Title, LWF, Pattern Analyzer, Fire Control for QD) then the last 21 points will be filler. Either Omega Leader with A Score to Settle for the trolls, or a TIE Shuttle with Fleet Officer (and Courier Droid at the appropriate point) and Mk2, for giving Vader and QD a focus each on the engagement round, so they can hit with fully modded Harpoons.

Either way, you have to rely on your alpha strike doing enough to the enemy that your playing with basically 80 points of actual list, shoudln't matter that much. If you fail to thoroughly nuke a prime target, you're in trouble.

I flew this 'imperial alpha strike' list archetype at Canadian Nationals and did crummy. I know someone else who also flew similar and although he did a bit better, it was still not good enough to make the cut.

Frankly its a dud idea (or was at the time).

The problem is Vader. He's just too **** squishy with VI. The other problem is the 3rd ship. I used Scimitar with Tactican + Fleet officer. The other guy I know used Countdown (in hindsight, I think this is the better choice----Countdown is solid). But either way, in order for this list to really work, that 3rd ship needs to hit hard early on or else you lose your damage lead too fast. And that's the crux of it. You NEED that 3rd ship to deal good damage.

Maybe the new Assault Gunboat will be able to do the job, but it will have to be PS 2 and either Mangler + Linked or else Harpoon + LRS (neither of those options are ideal for this build).

You could also drop a missile off of either Vader or Quickdraw in order to fit in Pure Sabaac, but then you are losing some of your high PS punch to gain lower PS punch so is it worth it? Questionable.

Now having said all that, my experiences were prior to the new FAQ and some of the near 'auto-lose lists' that gave me such a hard time are no longer dominant in the meta. So maybe its in a bit better place now, but I have my doubts. I'm enjoying running Imperial arc-dodgers again though since they are back thanks to the new FAQ.

I would try Vader and QD like this:

QD : VI, Harpoons, FCS, Targeting Synch, Title, Guidance Chips (39)

Vader : VI, Harpoons, Title, Adv Targeting Computer, Chips (35)

Then fill out your last spot with either:

Gamma Vet : Deadeye, Harpoons, Extra Munitions, Guidance Chips (26)

or

Pure Sabacc : VI, Adaptive Ailerons, Lightweight Frame (25)

QD with targeting synch should guarantee Vader and the second ship have TL ready to go when they fire, and on future rounds since it's being kept up with FCS.

The bomber option gives you two harpoons and some redundancy with deadeye for when QD explodes.

Sabacc is tossing ordinance level dice (just without the perks of chips or the harpoon effect). Since he fires last he could be fully modified by eating QD's Target lock. If you line it up well and get both harpoons off of the PS11 ships, and a fully modified range 1 from Sabacc, something should be hurting.

I potentially like the Sabacc version better since he gives them some harder choices on who to target first and he's a better end game ship than the bomber, but I can't say I've tried it enough to really say for sure.

Vader hates to be stressed so I would suggest Captain Yorr (24 points). Cf the 2nd list of the latest French Nationals:

Captain Yorr + Collision Detector + Kylo Ren
"Quickdraw" + Veteran Instincts + Fire-Control System + Cruise Missiles + Special Ops Training + Guidance Chips
Darth Vader + Cruise Missiles + Veteran Instincts + Engine Upgrade + TIE/x1 + Advanced Targeting Computer
(100)

There are 3 important questions that lead to different squads:

1. Do you want to destroy a ship with your alphastrike? If yes then the third ship needs to be a highPS missile carrier, too.

2. Do you really want the ps11? If no then you get two more points.

3. Do you want three good ships with harpoons if possible, or do you want harpoons with good ships if possible?

For me the answer was yes, yes, harpoons. My list , which it looks like I‘m the only guy flying it (but which also works pretty well), is:

ImperialAlphaAces (100)

•Darth Vader (35) - TIE Advanced
Veteran Instincts (1), Harpoon Missiles (4), TIE/x1 (0), Guidance Chips (0), Advanced Targeting Computer (5)

•"Quickdraw" (34) - TIE/SF Fighter
Veteran Instincts (1), Collision Detector (0), Harpoon Missiles (4), Special Ops Training (0), Guidance Chips (0)

•The Inquisitor (31) - TIE Adv. Prototype
Veteran Instincts (1), Harpoon Missiles (4), TIE/v1 (1), Guidance Chips (0)

I got second in a 32people tournament and TC Open top16 (lost in a nailbiter against Oliver Pocknell with his nationals list that got him into top16 again in Belgium)

The more meta lists I face the better I‘m off. Even KananLowhhrick was possible.

In short: the list allows me to punch WAY above my weight class, as I‘m not a good player.

I get consistent 12 hits on the opening salvo, plus very often at least one crit. That means I deal 10dmg to 1agi ships like Nym and Miranda, and with luck can even take down a Shadowcaster or Dash/Dengar.

I flew Vader and QD with Duchess for the store champs season. Duchess maintains the high PS of the squad, allows you to properly load out the other two, and is insanely fun to fly.

Of course, you lose a significant amount of offensive output, so the squad flies a little differently to the ones above.

I like Vader and QD, but you can improve their effectiveness I think.

Vader: VI, Title, ATC, EU

QD: Expertise, Title, LWF, FCS, Pattern Analyzer

Omega Leader: Juke, Comm Relay

Sure you don't have the ordnance strike, but those are three very frustrating and fun aces!
