Small Fighter Coverage on a Rebel MSU

By stonestokes, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I don't really need to discuss my whole build here, but basically I have a Rebel MSU which includes a Bright Hope flotilla with which I can push 3 squadrons. I had been using the following squadrons:

  • Shara Bey
  • Tycho Celchu
  • 2x A-Wing

55 points. I know, it's not much. But I'm thinking that a bid would be nice for my build to try to get 1st player from time to time. So I am considering dropping Tycho to a regular A-Wing. Is Shara and 3x A-Wings a crazy inadequate Small Fighter Coverage unit? Is there something better for 50 points? My only goal is to delay the wreckening that bombers can do on my fleet for a couple of rounds.

If you are looking for interceptors for enemy (mostly) bombers, you cannot be more efficient than with Shara/Tycho. Nothing to complain about it.

Btw, if someone wants to bomb ships, the list Will have Intel. Making your a-Wings almost completely useless(They wont stop anything) Maybe its Just me, but I dont believe in small/medium size squadronballs: If the oponent has max squadrons, youre gifting him/her 50-80 Points. I know, only siths talk in absolutes, but Id go full squads or none, a Cracken list can do well both ways. Your squad equals a trc corvette;). Also, Yt-2400 does really well in msu-s in my experience.

This is not so. You just need to spread them out so they can't all be Intelled at the same time. Put a pair of A-wings opposite each other on opposite sides of a bomber ball at the outer limits of distance 1 such that they can't fit Intel at distance 1 of both. This is why A-wings are so good in small squadron forces: their speed gives you the positioning flexibility to pull this off. Yeah, you're going to lose the A-wings, but you're doing so to force the bombers to waste their shots at 11-point A-wings instead of 51-point TRC90's. That's a good trade, you just have to build the fleet to effectively leverage the time the A-wings have bought you.

Which is why I'm not sure how valuable giving advice here is without the rest of OP's fleet. Some fleets prefer you spend those few points on Jan X-wings, which last longer and will win the war of attrition but don't generally pin as effectively as equivalent points' worth of A-wings. Generally speaking, in my experience, a fast, light fleet that can very effectively leverage one turn to pop carriers before the A-wings die will do better with an A-wing screen, while a slower, more resilient fleet that relies on sustained fire will prefer something involving Jan and X-wings.

Thank you. That was incredibly helpful. :) I have decided to up my fighter coverage to 6 squadrons. I'm pretty good at positioning in the manner you describe to foil intel, but the A-Wings just die pretty quickly. Here's a quick and dirty summary of my fleet (or at least one version of it):

  • Leia Organa on her flagship Pelta Command with Intel Officer, DCaps, StM;
  • 2x CR90A with DTT;
  • Salvation Neb-B with QBT
  • Bright Hope with Toryn Farr and Comms Net
  • Hera, Shara, 4x A-Wings.

Here's another version:

  • 2x Pelta Command, with Projection Experts and DCaps. 1 with Leia, the other with StM.
  • 1x CR90A with DTT;
  • Salvation Neb-B with QBT
  • Bright Hope with Toryn Farr and Comms Net
  • Shara, 5x A-Wings

Both run pretty slow, but they kill things pretty efficiently. I'm just weak against bombers (though before I only had 4 squadrons instead of 6, so maybe that will help).

Mh you need more firepower vs ships imo. Sure the cr90a can do well, Salvation also if you can cover his sides.

But without bombers or a hard hitter, I am not sure about the success of that list, even if I like the idea.

From my experience, Leia loves the mc80 battle cruiser, and the mc80 bc loves her. And it hit hard. Otherwise maybe a mc30 or more cr90's?

Is that Pelta Command really usefully in a fleet where squadrons are interceptors?

I did this very quickly, keeping in mind your main idea, but maybe slightly more efficicent:

- MC80 BC, Mon Karren, Gunnery Team, Leading Shots

- CR90a, Jaina's Light, TRC, General Leia Organa

- CR90a, TRC

- NebB Support, Salvation

- GR75, Comms Net

- Shara Bey, 3 A-Wings

EDIT: just noticed you were talking about MSU... sorry :P I just leave it there anyway. The MC80 BC+TRC90a can become 2 MC30 for Medium hard hitters!

Thanks.

I'll probably stick with the Peltas. I just like them. Even though this is my tournament fleet, I'm trying to build it for simple fun as my number one priority. :) That's why I was hesitant to list my fleet in the first place — I'm not looking to change the core of it. I mostly want to try to adjust the squadrons to fare better against heavy squadron fleets.

Thanks again for your help. I am definitely going to try Leia on an MC80BCMK some day. She is quickly becoming my favorite Rebel commander.
