I plan on doing a re paint on a u wing and I was wondering if masking tape to tape off areas and spray paint is a viable method of getting base coats and straight lines then going back for detail with preferably citadel paint for details just easier cause I play 40k as well it'd be nice not to have to buy a new brand or type of paint if I don't have to. Any and all suggestions welcome thanks!

Hello Bane.
Welcome to the Forum.
You could mask and spray, Or mask and paint if you don't want to buy the spray paint.
If you do mask and paint, use light coats when painting to avoid bleed under the tape.
The best masking tape I have used is Green Frog Tape " Available at most Hardware stores.
and Tamiya fine masking tape easier to purchase off eBay.

Blue/white tack is also great for masking models if your spraying............

You will get a nice fine line when masking and spraying.
it takes a bit of time but with patience, you can get great results.

All the best,
Barry.
Woah, that brown 2400 is a beauty. I mean colours, not only the mods.

Thanks for the pics and info Barry. I was curious though could I use a normal acrylic spray paint from Walmart or target or would you suggest sticking to something equivalent to the sprays shown in your pics. Sorry if it's a dumb question just figured I'd ask.
Also before painting whether or not it's brush or spray do I need to prep the model in anyway?

Hello.
Yes I prep my models before painting, the best method with out damaging the model or detail is scotchbright pads........

You can get them on eBay and they are not expensive, the best is Grey in colour as its finer
green is a mid abrasive and red is course,
as for painting.
yes the paint you want to use will work, i only ever use acrylic base paint as the enamel paints can melt the soft ABS plastic of the miniature.
once you have lightly abrased the model with fine sand paper or the scotchbright pads.
give the model a wash in warm soapy water and leave to dry.
and if its cold outside, warm your paint up in a bowel or bucket of hot tap water.
this will warm the paint so it sprays better and the resin in the paint doesn't plume.......give a white mist finish due to the resin in the paint not working properly from the cold.
Have Fun !
P.s
Some people swear by removing the paint from the model first.
you don't need to do this as the FFG paint finish is so fine on the model.
you wont notice the difference.
And I will say I always primer the models before painting.
Unless i'm just doing touch ups.
like spraying new stripes or a single colour section.
Also,
Here is another method you may want to try if your unsure about painting models......
All the best,

Awesome thank you again so much hopefully I will have some ships ready in a few weeks depending on how work goes lol.
Ha Ha well good luck and enjoy your painting.......but take your time.
don't rush things....you will learn as you go and get better every time.
and so as not to damage your models.
Why not practice masking and painting on a piece of scrap plastic or an old toy first.
see how that goes, then progress to a model.
its what I did many years ago when I started out.
All the best,
Barry.
