Soontir/Omega/Kestal - Advice

By captainpatch, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I haven’t been able to find any Tie Agg lists out there that I’ve wanted to try running so i thought I’d put my own together, but don’t know how i feel about it quite yet. Any tips/tweak suggestions are welcome!

(99/100)

Soontir- PTL (3), Autothrusters (2), Royal Guard Tie (0)

Omega Leader- Shield Upg (4), Comm Relay (3), Juke (2)

Lt. Kestal- TLT (6), Shield Upg (4), Lightweight Frame (2), Deadeye (1)

Well, the first things to note are that your Kestal build has two Modifications (Shield Upgrade and Lightweight Frame), and Deadeye when you have nothing to use it on. For the former, Lightweight Frame is by far the superior choice, and for the latter there's argument for Veteran Instincts (to get a PS9 TLT carrier) or Intensity (to ensure dice modification or accessibility to Kestal's ability when barrel rolling).

Kestal, though, seems better suited to being a cheap munitions carrier rather than a TLT platform - with VI, a Cruise Missile (or Harpoon Missile for an extra point) and Guidance Chips, she's as cheap as Omega Leader yet could deliver a potent alpha strike at PS9. If you didn't want to go that route, a cheap Sienar Specialist is a better place for a TLT.

Standard Soontir will do as he always does, but he remains vulnerable to the bomb-heavy environment (a single Sabine-powered Bomblet could kill him outright), and you also arnt using the second mod slot: Targeting Computer or Twin Ion Engine MkII would be the best choices here, to my mind (I've never trusted Stealth Device).

Omega Leader is fine, though the Shield Upgrade isn't really needed and could free up some points - perhaps to give Kestal a second missile.

Yeah that makes total sense! I’m not really tied to having to run TLT so maybe I’ll run the variations both ways and see how it turns out for me. Any advice on how to set up/fly?

I’ve seen Kestal do well with Ion Cannon Turret, Lightweight Frame and Predator. Pretty effective at hunting down small ship aces and having Predator gives you a chance to modify your shots without spending your focus token so you can use it on her ability.

I'm going to agree a lot with what Malus put out already. Soontir would appreciate either targeting comp or stealth device is the old standard. Omega Leader also uses a stealth device pretty well since you have an evade and focus fairly often. Kestal absolutely gets more out of her pilot ability using a missile like ion/cruise/harpoon/homing depending on your squad's capabilities, and Ion or synced turret will probably get you more use than your TLT. She wants to ideally sit at range 2ish with a focus and hoping to make her attacks hurt. Squeezing that focus into only 1 hit for a TLT shot is not efficient, but the other options certainly are. You can fly her as an almost jouster; she likes to skirt along the side of the main event as even with LWF, she's a bit of a soft target. Deadeye works great for a lot of her options, so it's not uncommon to see those paired up together.

These kinds of lists do work, if you can outfly your opponent and usually you need that PS10+ to make sure you can dodge those arcs as long as possible. Soontir and OL both like to fly as flankers and would line up out wide and like to come in on a side, out of arc for as long as possible. That unfortunately means you want to avoid a head up joust against pretty much every list you encounter. Both of your dodgy aces die in a glorious ball of fire when they're subject to multiple double modded shots in any round, so I would maybe suggest something that has the meat to go toe to toe and soak those opening shots without dying. Unfortunately, fitting in a meaty ship in place of one of yours doesn't leave many options. A defender could be a substitute and is about the price tag you'd be able to pay, or a TIE/sf would be able to take a hit or two and shake it off and maintain a good amount of firepower no matter how you build it. Assuming you want to keep your TIE/ag, you would want to outfit her in such a way that it creates opportunities for your other ships to capitalize on, or denies your opponent their movement choices or action economy in someway.

I would probably start with that: what do you want your aggressor to do? Give her a job and build around it. Play it a couple times and see what you like, what works and what doesn't. After a good day or two tweaking it, you should have a solid list.

I would concur that starting with a solid Kestal build and then filling the gaps is a wise process. I am personally a big fan of Kestal with Deadeye, Unguided Rockets, Synced Turret, and LWF.

Soontir is still a very risky choice in today's meta, what with how infuriatingly fragile he is.

Omega, however, is brilliant. Her and Kestal together make for an absolutely brutal combination that essentially says to your opponent: "Oh you have tokens? That's real nifty, bucko. To bad idgaf."

Shield Upgrades are so expensive, you can almost get another ship for their cost.

The empires most aggro ships in the same list. Opponent is gonna have to really decide who to kill first. Flanking ion cannon double edge with lone wolf. Wampa who dont give a crap how many tokens you have. Or Endgame king OL, or Soontir "If you dont have bombs, good luck" Fel. Any missile or bomb they waste on Wampa or Double Edge just makes Soontir and OL more powerful as the game goes on.

LW on double edge doesnt need to kick in early game, its there so if your opponent ignores him, he becomes more powerful near the end as Wampa, then Soontir or OL get taken out.
