I've had limited experience with harpoons so far, but yes, most of the time this is the result.

So true, these blow up in my face half the time when I use them.

That's precisely the reason why I stick to cruise missiles for now. They're harder to set up but I do have Fenn Rau in my list and the last thing I want is to have to wonder whether I want to get into R1 of the opponent or not. Dash in particular appreciates the extra protection. Just bump one ace in R1 and watch his friends hesitate whether to fire. Especially if they managed to get into R1 too!

Yeah, you may not want Fenn Rau in range 1.

I disagree. I'm not a very good player, but harpoons carried me so far to "my" best results yet.

They are incredibly easy to use, crazy reliable, and I'll gladly take that one damage to remove an entire ship.

how does the harpoon missile work?

Lets say my tie figther is hit by a harpoon and that same attack destroys it. Does the condition apply? or is the ship removed before?

Every time I play with Harpoons they blow up in my face.

The condition is applied after, so in that case it was never applied.

Well, I've only faced harpoon missiles once, and whilst I lost, it's fair to point out that that was mostly due to being outflown and bomblet damage, plus the alpha strike damage which would have been the same whether it was harpoons or cruise missiles.

I did exactly as much damage to the enemy with harpoon splash damage as it did to my squad. So...yeah. Whilst it's not guaranteed to go wrong, it's easy to find yourself handing free deadman's switches to your opponent.
