Casual Gamers I need your help

By Jiron, in X-Wing

Hi fellow pilots. I need your help. Since I started with x-wing, I only play Resistence ships (and HWK-290).

Because I really like Boba Fett, I have bought Slave I and have full set for Empire and Scum. That's some time ago, I bought several S&V ships but I still don't like the gameplay for those. I only buy ships I like and field my favorite characters but it still doesn't fulfill me the same way as flying Resistance.

I really want to like the other s&v as much as I like flying Boba himself!

It's entirely casual request, what should I do to like it. Thanks for help.

I think Genesis Red is a really fun casual card, and I just loooooove the StarVipers ever since EaW. Such a beautiful ship.

To me, the appeal of Scum has to be thematic. I would play Boba with either other Bounty Hunters, or Mandalorians, but not pirates or Black Sun. It's not that I don't like those ships or pilots, but I try to be thematic. I could make a pirate list, with many rag-tag fighters with random upgrades :)

Also, you should try Epic. It's the best casual xwing experience I've ever had.

Since I don't know what you liked about the resistance, I can only guess what's your thing. What you won't find is some buffing synergistic lists. Scum is more about selfish, reckless, fearless pilots and upgrades (except for attani or Manaroo maybe)

May advice out of the blue: If available, try Palob (hwk) and N'dru (Z95)

Or, for the synergy aspect, try some attani and /or Manaroo.

Hope that helps, not sure what you are looking for

Maybe you could list what you own and put them in order of preference...

  • Firespray-31
  • Aggressor
  • JumpMaster 5000
  • Lancer-class Pursuit Craft
  • YV-666
  • G-1A Starfighter
  • HWK-290
  • Kihraxz Fighter
  • M3-A Interceptor
  • Protectorate Starfighter
  • Scurrg H-6 Bomber
  • StarViper
  • Y-Wing
  • Z-95 Headhunter
  • Quadjumper
  • M12-L Kimogila Fighter

Meanwhile, I blindly suggest... (casual you said, >100...)

( 1) Get another Firespray-31 and run Kath Scarlet along side Boba Fett? Fearlessness works with the aux-arc.

(2) I get a kick out of running Kavil with Opportunist, Overclocked R4, and Blaster Turret.

(3) Lancer-class Pursuit Craft has similar arcs to the Firespray if that's part of it, perhaps with Push The Limit to always be able to rotate the mobile arc. Ketsu Onyo is a fellow Mandalorian bounty hunter. If I get around to using her I will probably want to try the EPT Intimidation.

(4) Bossk with Recon Specialist and Calculation will always get you that double hit.

(5) If you take a large ship and you are willing to take an extra point of damage when you get in a good position, then Expose with Experimental Interface to get past defense dice.

(6) Part of what you may be lacking if you prefer large ship is mobility: Try slapping an Engine Upgrade and PTL and see how that works. Or if you are confident in your play style without a specific EPT then the Engine upgrade with Daredevil.

(X) ... I don't know your other preferred ships or I would keep going.

Casual Epic is pretty awesome especially 4 players with 2 teams.

One player from each team handles the Capitol ship and some generics. While the other handles the more complex Star fighters.

Well... the thing you need to do to like (particular) Scum... apparently you wanna have a lore background on characters.

Go buy the "Shadows of the empire" book or comic ( http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Shadows_of_the_Empire_(novel) or http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Shadows_of_the_Empire_(comics) )

(Also available as an audiobook, I believe also on Youtube or so?)

There you will find background on Guri and XIzor (Starviper), Boba Fett, IG-88 and the black sun (black sun syndicate generics).

Then stories will form in your head and you will want to play them ;-)

This is the piece of advice I am looking for. To be honest, I haven't yet tried to play Protectorate Starfighter other then Fenn Rau. I could play multiple of these as fire support for Boba. Unfortunatelly, the new take on the Mandalorians is so meh...

You hit it right, it's the theme I am worried about. It's not really about the ships themselves but the characters, the spirit beyond the stats and so.

You get a second Firespray, paint it, and run Boba & Kath Scarlet together.

It's really just a behavior modification thing.

If you think about a Resistance ship, roll up a newspaper and hit yourself in the face. That's negative conditioning.

When you think about a Scum ship, eat your favorite dessert. That's positive conditioning.

In a couple weeks, you'll be all about S&V.

If you like resistance ships, you like T70’s. The K fighter can be made however you want. Put engine and auto thrusters on it and it’s close to a T70

Posts like yours are among the most valuable for the community. Thank you. But can you explain what you mean by "kick" in the above statement? I get part of the synergy between Kavil and the upgrades, but I think I might be missing something.

A pirate and a bounty hunter? I don't think so. :-)

Dengar frequently worked with Boba, and after the nerf he might be fun to play against, while still being very good.

I suggest you try to make a flavour list with the Jm5k and slave 1, see how it works. Put all the jank on it if playing Dengar makes you feel sick :D

:D ! Epic! Gotta love it! 100% with you there!

What a great idea! Thanks for that, I'll have to try it out! :)

Well, I’m pretty sure Boba worked with N’dru for a while and he’s a ton of fun with VI and Harpoon Missiles... Throw in a couple more z-95s or a y-wing and you have a list.

Well thanks, at least someone appreciates my input, the OP has trouble being clear so I was just making guesses. I mean I can't tell what he/she's disliking or liking about Resistance/Scum from his post. If it has to do with themes, then @MaxPower's suggestion to read more books is the right one. If he just can't find the right builds, then I gave him/her a few things to try.

Getting a kick is an expression, like "more bang for your buck."

I wouldn't worry about that. I have three protectorate starfighters, each with different level of dirtiness. I fly Old Teroch on the dirtiest and Fenn Rau on the polished fighter.

Seven days ago you posted this where you said you fly Old Teroch & Fenn Rau, so was adding a third Mandalorian (like Boba Fett) into the mix such a stretch? I see now you don't mean casual play, since you ran them in a tournament.

Your title says "Casual Gamers" not "Tournament players." When you use the term "Casual" it's probably best if you mention that you mean 100 point Standard Tournament play and not Casual Play where tournament rules don't matter.

All right, I admit I have put my OP on with lack of info as It laid hard on my mind. So, to list all of my Scum ships: Firespray, 3 Protectorate Starfighters, HWK-290 and Quadjumper. Two of these types I have only bought because I like the look of it (Protectorate and Quadjumper). I have somehow playtested almost every pilot (Jakku Gunrunner and Unkar Plutt being the only exception) with a lists but somehow I always end up with Boba, Fenn and Zuvio because these are characters I kind of like.

The important thing for me is the theme must work for me.

For the last point... I don't define casual as "non-tournament". If you feel offended I am sorry about that. The same goes about my english. Not my first language.

Pirates have money. Bounty hunters work for money. It's a match made in X-wing heaven.

Well, when I play, I don't really like big ships. I tend to play with only small based ships. Many people gravitate towards the big based ships for Scum, but I think you can easily stick with all small based ships and do well. Have you tried things like 5 Khiraxz Fighters? Or something close to that? Try a bunch of generics that are very similar. That's what I like about Scum. You don't have to go with all the named bosses. Go for a bunch of henchmen!

I play plenty of roleplaying games and historical games, so I’m used to playing “the bad guys”. That’s who I usually think of Scum and Villainy as - they’re the reason the Empire stays in place, because they represent the anarchy and disarray that the galaxy could be plunged into without the Empire’s control. It’s not always done well in either the new or old canons, but I’ve always thought one of the best ways to understand Darth Vader is to see him fighting people who are actually worse than the Empire. Having a few battles where you root for him makes him a more interesting and believable villain. And of course Scum are often the enemies of the heroes (Rebels), and even if there aren’t any Tusken Raiders and very minimal presence of Jabba the Hutt in this game, there’s plenty of memorable “bad guys” (who aren’t the Empire) from the films.

One good way to play the “bad guys”, though, is actually with the generics. For example, a whole bunch of base Scyk Interceptors could belong to about anyone you want them to, any criminal syndicate you want to write a story for. Flying a whole bunch of different ships gives the appearance of a bunch of hired thugs. A base YV-666 with some generic crew members could be the boss, and the swarm of Z-95s and Y-Wings could be his small hired army. Who knows why your opponent’s Imperial or Rebel aces have run afoul of these ruffians, but having some new characters that you create, aside from the ones we all know, can add some depth and life to your games.

And I know it’s weird, but I like the paint schemes to match. M3-As, Kihraxzs, and Kimogilas go together, Z-95s, (older) Starvipers, and (newer) Kihraxz go together, etc.

The great hondo disagrees!! We do not want to catch our quarry, for if we turn them over to the authorities how shall we steal from them again?

You catch them, and make them pay you a ransom to *not* turn them over to the authorities! Then let them go, or turn them in anyway!

So you're talking about 100 points, 3'x3' play area, and 6 asteroids/obstacles.

Constable Zuvio? seriously? you said you didn't like mixing Pirates and Bounty Hunters, but adding a police officer in the mix is okay? lol.

I think you need to have the C-ROC (cards/offical) to pull this off, but you might get a kick enjoy it:

Palob Godalhi (20)
Opportunist (4)
Blaster Turret (4)
Recon Specialist (3)

Fenn Rau (28)
Opportunist (4)
Concord Dawn Protector (1)

Cartel Spacer (14)
"Light Scyk" Interceptor (-2)

Cartel Spacer (14)
"Light Scyk" Interceptor (-2)

*The three blockers are meant to help trigger Opportunist on the first two ships.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Doole's_Defense_Fleet
- curious what you think of this mercenary fleet mix of ships?? Thematically.

If you're using Scum Boba Fett you must have the Most Wanted pack, so you must also have a Y-wing and two Z-95s.. In any case I'm going to suggest another list...

Kavil (24)
Opportunist (4)
Blaster Turret (4)
Overclocked R4 (1)

Palob Godalhi (20)
Calculation (1)
Blaster Turret (4)
Recon Specialist (3)

Mandalorian Mercenary (35)
Push the Limit (3)
Intelligence Agent (1)

What seems to be a problem, Bounty Hunters are law enforcement as well. Read the Bounty Hunter's Guide. :-)

You're right, it's just that "Scum & Villainy" doesn't make me think of law enforcement.
Contract bounty hunters don't have to be for the law; Remember Boba Fett worked for Jabba the Hutt.
What about the rest of the post? Have you considered getting any M3-A s or a C-ROC ?
