Just... Curve the Bombs.

By emeraldbeacon, in X-Wing Squad Lists

A silly list with surprising potential, that I had a lot of fun with recently... all based around the scum pilots who don't believe in dropping bombs normally.

  • EMON AZZAMEEN (Firespray) - Tractor Beam, Cad Bane, Cluster Mine, Connor Net, Slave 1, Extra Munitions, and Long Range Sensors
  • SOL SIXXA (Scurrg) - Trick Shot, Twin Laser Turret, Cluster Mine, Connor Net, Extra Munitions, Havoc, Advanced Sensors, R4-E1, Experimental Interface

Strengths: Both pilots fly at Pilot Skill 6, and both can curve their bombs in unexpected ways to catch targets unawares. Sol Sixxa has some action efficiency with the combination of EI, Advanced Sensors, and R4-E1 (who lets me use action bombs with stress). Emon can REALLY throw his bombs around, has that nifty extra attack arc, and by carrying Cad Bane around, he makes my cluster mines that much more frightening.

Weaknesses: Scurrgs still fold really easy when focus-fired upon. An over-reliance upon bombs can lead me to passing up better possible shots. The squad tends to telegraph its intentions, so I lose the benefit of unpredictability.

Your thoughts on how to improve it?

Ive been flying sol for a bit now and i think i prefere him to nym! He definatly wants action bombs but i fly him him with cad bane instead

I'm a huge fan of Emon and a Scurgg! Personally, I feel that Nym is just such a strong bomber with Bomblets, Adv. Sensors, Eu, VI, that I have never really thought to give Sol a shot.

However, if you dig Sol, here's what I have to say:

Advanced Sensors is a nice choice to adapt if needed when dropping the bombs. However, a crew like Dengar might preserve greater viability in terms of offense. Expertise would likewise do the same, I think better than Trick Shot. And with Sol's ability, you can already adapt quite effectively.

I don't think you need EI. I don't think it offers enough on that build.

Scavenger Crane on Emon would make the bombing shenanigans even more potent.

I do like some of your thoughts! I'm still really partial to using Advanced Sensors for the bombs, just because it gives me two locations (pre or post maneuver) to deliver the gifts... especially if my opponent manages to block my escape routes. That rules out Dengar, and while I love the idea of Expertise, the fact that most of my attacks are TLTs makes me reluctant to invest 4 points into it (at the cost of other equipment).

That said, I really like the thought of Scavenger Crane on Emon, since he's usually alive in the late game (because Scurrgs are so squishy), and I agree that EI didn't have much punch in my game. Nor did my Tractor Beam really have an effect (it was really there just because I had a point left over, and I knew I wasn't going to be facing any real initiative issues). To that end, here's a modified version:

  • EMON AZZAMEEN (50) - Cad Bane, Connor Net, Cluster Mines, Slave I, Extra Munitions, Scavenger Crane, Long Range Scanners
  • SOL SIXXA (50) - Trick Shot, Twin Laser Turret, Havoc, Advanced Sensors, Connor Net, Cluster Mines, Extra Munitions, R5-P8, Long Range Scanners

All in all, I dropped EI, Stress Bomber Droid, and the Tractor Beam, to add Scavenger Crane, Revenge Droid, and another Long Range Scanners. R5-P8 makes Sol Sixxa a slightly less-appealing target, since there's a 50-50 chance of free revenge damage to go along with his meager 1 defense die.

That does look stronger IMHO! Predator could substitute the Painbot to improve your TLT shots, but I see the appeal of both

I'm debating whether or not it's worth it to downgrade one of the bombs to a proximity mine. I gain single-shot potency with Cad Bane (rerolls on 3 dice are better than rerolls on 2), but I lose the control effects of Connor Net, and the sheer range/spread of Cluster Mines...

I don't think it'd be worth it personally. Clusters and Conners are far and away the strongest mines.
