Harpwned! Four with one blow!

By Hawkstrike, in X-Wing

So there we were -- no sh@! -- final table at our Friday X-wing Q4 kit tournament. Me and my three Lok Revenant Missile Boats against PGS's (yes, that PGS) Fenn Rau, Thweek, Contracted Scout list.

PGS has initiative. All the ships have gotten into a range 1 scrum with one Scurrg bumped on the Scout, the other two Scurrgs only have the Scout in arc, while Thweek and Fenn have two Scurrgs in arc each. PGS's list destroys the bumped Scurrg, #3, leaving me with two ships. Here's the game state: Scurrg #1 has seven health and a R1 shot at the Scout. Scurrg #2 has two health and a R1 shot at the Scout. The Scout has five health and is Harpooned. Thweek and Fenn Rau are both range one of the other ships; both are on one health, and Thweek is Harpooned.

This is where the fun begins ...

Scurrg #1 fires range 1 at the Scout, scores Blank-Hit-Hit-Crit, no evades. The Crit is a Major Explosion (rolled Focus -- safe). Harpooned goes off; Scout falls to one health, everyone else takes one damage. Scurrg #2 is down to 1 health. Fenn dies. Thweek dies, then sets off Harpooned. Everyone takes one damage again. The Scout dies, and Scurrg #2 dies, leaving Scurrg #1 the last ship flying.

One shot ... four kills ... ALL VICTORY!

More fun than a barrel of dead man's switches. PGS: "It's so funny, I'm not even mad!"

The lesson, boys and girls, is discard that Harpooned condition when you get the chance. I'm wondering how the list would have gone with all Harpoons (I used Harpoons, Concussions, and Cruise Missiles on the three boats). Probably nastier ... but we would have have to decide what to do when a ship gets hit with multiple Harpoon missiles. Personally, I'm of the opinion that the condition does not stack -- you're either Harpooned or not.

It was awesome to behold. Just wish one of us thought to take a picture before you took cleaned up.

How salty over the Harpoon design was PGS?

Only lightly seasoned.

Lol "when you get a chance" I get it

(Because you have to roll a die :()

**** man, there are cancers easier to get rid of than a 50/50 discard

You have to roll the die for damage; the discard happens either way. And if you take damage discarding the condition, it doesn't explode and splash everything else, even if you die in the process.

Weapons Failure, on the other hand, is that pesky thing that never goes away because you have to roll to clear it, and my dice always come up blanks.

PGS? Laughing?

Lies.......

You'd be surprised at how amicable he is in person. He also follows the rules so consistently, he calls judges on himself when he does something wrong.

No one cared who I was until I put on the mask.

its a shame what people perceive as power of anonymity on the internet.

That sounds glorious.

This. Christ, this is awesome.

Without seeing the game state and positioning, it seems like he played that extremely poorly.

Two ships harpooned, one at one hull, and another ship at one hull as well, and he decided to park them all within range 1 of each other?

It sounds like his plan was "I hope he doesn't roll a crit." Because if you did, he essentially guaranteed he'd lose the game. Then you rolled the crit.

Props for pulling it off, but it sounds like he handed you the W on a silver platter and hoped you wouldn't take it.

Congrats!

Vassal league match today my opponent suicided his fenn to kill my lothal rebel. Rebel had 5 health with harpooned on him, fenn was at 1 health and ended up at range 1. Took the shot and got 3 crits through (and a hit) to kill the rebel with the extra damage from Harpooned and fenn from the splash.

Agreed. I played against a Harpoon list for the first time this week. I forgot you could discard the condition with an action and it's one of the big factors that probably lost me the last game I played (along with fixating on the missiles and forgetting Nym still had bomblet generator)

Good news and bad news on that front :

Action: Discard this card. Then roll 1 attack die. On a hit or critical result, suffer 1 damage.

The discard is automatic. You're rolling for whether or not the charge blows up when you do. However, even if the resulting damage kills you, you've already discarded the condition so you will never go off and trigger splash damage onto the rest of your squad.
