Rebooting Hoth campaign after 8 months off, advice wanted

By FrogTrigger, in Imperial Assault Campaign

So I've got a group that hasn't played their campaign in about 8 months, just got put on hiatus, but now we are getting back together to finish it off. It's a Hoth campaign and they are on the finale. The party composition isn't the greatest, I think they went 3-7 in the campaign with a few close losses. I've been playing other campaigns with other groups so my knowledge is fresh, these guys haven't touched the game in 8 months. I want to make it a fun experience for them as I want to boot up another campaign with this group afterwards.

I was thinking of a few things, first off I thought it might be a good idea to just throw them into a side mission to start, give them a chance to get re familiar with their characters/the game before we go straight into the biggest mission of the 11 mission campaign. I thought I could let them pick one they want, or pick one myself for them that is really fun. Anyone have any suggestions for a really FUN and relatively SHORT side mission ? Reward could be whatever because I can just make one up for them, make it credits instead of the actual reward if need be. Like I said, the party composition wasn't great so I'm not worried about winning the last mission, I know I could win if I actually tried, I just want to focus on making it a fun experience.

For the finale itself I was thinking of editing it slightly, part of me thought it would be neat if I made the reward for the side mission C3P0 (they already tried their mission this campaign and lost it),so they can bring him to the finale to help and make him invuln to attacks if he is standing next to a hero, but remove the defensive bonus he awards those adjacent to him. Thought that was a pretty fair trade, slows them down but offers a free focus bot for as long as they keep him adjacent.

I also thought when the time comes for Dengar to show up, instead of having him show up on my side I would switch Dengar with Leia and make up some flavor text about "it's about **** time you guys showed up!!" and have her join the party at that point. Giving myself a few units to spawn on the other side of the map to help off set the threat.

Any other thoughts/ideas on the Hoth finale to make it fun/balanced/interesting? Or a fun side mission to help get them re familiarized with their characters and possibly throw them a few upgrades before they move on? How long did the Hoth finale take for you guys to complete?

Did they complete all of their characters side missions?

If not, you could pick one of those to give them a chance at it before the finale?

I would actually run the players through a little side mission as a 'refresher course'. Let the players get the cobwebs off their skills, and remember how the game plays, how their heroes special abilities work, etc. Let the players know that the game is just a refresher...theres no xps or loot to be had at the end. It just so they aren't stumbling around during the grand finale, and shoot themselves in the foot because they forgot how a skill or equipment works.

How are they doing on Bane/Boon?

If there's an unresolved mission there, this might be a good chance for them to have one more chance to do some damage- at the very least, it'd for sure remove a bane.

There are some fun ones, too- I particularly like the interesting mechanics of the Wampa one.

I agree with giving them a crack at an unresolved Threat mission or side mission, and if they lose, give everyone their character specific side mission reward cards. I did this for my group in our Hoth campaign before the finale and was still able to win, but it was much closer and more satisfying for the heroes.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up giving them another boon mission before the finale and it worked out well. I played at about 85% in the finale and they won on the final roll, had they failed to kill Sorin I had a focused elite snow trooper poised to finish off their last hero (4 health) so it would have been tight.

hoth was a fun campaign, the maps are huge though I find and without a mobile group the missions can take forever. Now bring on the app!!
