Remember when the EU began borrowing ideas from literature and tv? Matthew Stover's novel Shatterpoint was a Star Wars version of Heart of Darkness , and the MedStar books were basically M*A*S*H in the Clone Wars. I'd love to see more of that... The Shining , but set in the Jedi Temple. Casablanca , but set against the background of the Galactic Civil War. Twin Peaks , but set on a sleepy backwater planet. Twilight , but with Wookies instead of vampires. Would make a much better film.
A new non Skywalker trilogy

This. Must have this. I'm in a production of the stage version of Casablanca right now (it's a lot of fun), and this would work great. I'm playing Major Strasser (no, I'm not actually a Nazi, I just play one on stage), and he's really a lot like a Grand Moff Tarkin kind of character. That could be adapted so well into Star Wars...and Ferrari is kinda like Jabba or some similar crime boss, and Victor Lazlo could be some Rebellion leader on the run. Sounds like this could be quite a novel.
Dune, set against the backdrop of Tatooine.
(just kidding....I could not resist.)
