Promoting runewars

What's your audience? I think that is a fantastic description for people who play/know X-Wing and Armada.

For newcomers to war gaming or people making the jump from LCGs to miniatures (for example) that might fly over their head.

"A miniatures war game focused on unit based tactics in which you maneuver through obstetrical , attack you opponent, manage magical and special abilities and complete objectives to win the day for your army."

Or you can use the LTP words:

"The Runewars Miniatures Game is a competitive game in
which each player controls an army of soldiers and fantastical
creatures in an epic battle on the fields of Terrinoth. During the
game, the armies will maneuver through dangerous terrain, clash
in brutal melees, harness potent magics, and much more, all in an
effort to win a victory for their faction by defeating the enemy."

Obstetrical, or Obstetrics is relating to childbirth, I don't know what your intent was with that word, did you mean obstacles, maybe?

No, “Kari’s Baby” is the next objective card. It’s kinda like an escort mission where you have to guide Kari’s offspring off the board. The disadvantage to Daqan is that the scenario starts with the baby popping out, so Kari is Immobilized for the first two rounds.

Yea @Curlycross how do you not no about this?

Call yourself a fan of the game. SMH.

* I can be passive aggressive and snide about an autocorwreckt too.

If you ever played the board game “Raptor,” it feels a lot like that. Just one baby though.

I wasn't trying to be passive aggressive, I really didn't know. I don't know if I'd ever guess autocorrect would do some medical term :P I'm not a Daqan player so I don't know about their baby delivering objectives.

If you are worried about people perceiving painting as an issue, set up one of your armies with a minimalist paint scheme. Mine is. It is not a display-worthy army, but it is very much table ready and has a distinct, moldy/filthy look for the undead.

When you can say your entire painting supply list is “1 brush, 3 paints, spray on primer, and a wash,” it isn’t nearly as intimidating as showing some gorgeous army that required dry brushing, blending 14 different colors to get that one glowing eye look, 5 layers for the Rune Golems chest glow, etc., etc.

While I understand the statement, you aren't getting gorgeous work and dry brushing in the same sentence ?. Gorgeous work requires a lot more finesse, and even more time commitment (yay....)

Anything with more steps than “apply paint to areas X, Y, and Z” is fancy panting to me.

In the spirit of sharing techniques that have worked for us:

Put peoples hands on the components. Seriously, just get them to set one dial and run through one round of play with 2-3 units on a demo board.

In my experience, talking about Runewars is far less effective than this hands-on approach. Once people start playing this game, they pick it up quickly, and it more or less sells itself.

My best successes have come from inviting someone in to scoot some figures around and get a feel for the dials.

Probably the best way to get interest. Get people playing in demos. Just having them watch makes it too easy for them to walk away and you not to really notice until it's too late.

Agreed. Have them set the dials just for one round. Wouldn't take long. Then they can watch their decisions play out.

I tried to push when the Latari expansions came out and got nothing. I know 2-3 people that play, but their schedules are not consistent and some of them are flakey. I really need to connect with them and figure out if they wanna do a once a month event or something.

I might make a push with the Uthuk release. I have a Waiqar army and a Latari army box. I could acquire Daqan from a friend of mine that is jumping from Runewars to Legion. Then I'd just have to buy a Uthuk army box and can show off all 4 factions on a demo day.

I’m still trying to offer demo games whenever possible. Unfortunately life came in the way lately. I’m not giving up though! Elves will get more people interested - I just need to finish painting them!

Several of my gaming association mates have already sold their armies. If FFG does not make some kind of bold move this is not looking good. The games is still as good as ever, and I love playing it, but we all have great games that died. One of the greatest blows have come from FFG its self when they announced Legion. Some people that were doubting made their minds and even some that were already in decided to leave the game.

it is unfortunate Star Wars has more draw than interesting game design, but it seems to be reality for some.

Gamers are fickle, and I'm tired of trying to wrangle them. I'm tired of being a salesman that doesn't get paid.

I totally agree with you there. Gamers are like teenage girls: they only want to play what's popular and what companies told them to like. When GW killed 8th I was banging my head against a wall trying to tell people they can still actually play the game, it's not like GW broke into their houses and stole their models. Nobody will play anything unless a company is holding their hands.

There's also that companies will also focus on whatever gives them easy money. Take Wizkids: D&D Attack Wing was an amazing game, but needed work to promote it. Compare with Heroclix, where all they needed to do was make a Deadpool model in a different colour and the nerds would throw money at them by the bucketload. Take a guess which game they unceremoniously dropped.

FFG really needs to capitalise on RW's niche and promote it, but I'm worried that- after the initial surge- they'll neglect it because Star Wars is just a license to print money. Why bother balancing and expanding a unique property when you can just release a new card of a popular character and make thousands from it?

Taking this long to get the factions out has been a problem.

They needed all 4 out to get the most people identifying with one of the factions. Then roll out a narrative campaign that players can influence to give them some stakes in it.

I don't know how they can grasp faction pride in L5R, see it in things like Warhammer, and then do nothing for it in Runewars. Probably should have released a "World of" book before release too so people could talk about the Lore.

I have people still being surprised that it is the same world as Descent.

I'm not interested enough to work heavily to promote, as most mass battle rank & file players in California are into 15mm (which I pefer) with certain areas heavy into Kings of War.

I just enjoy it with my buddy. I'll never have a fully painted army for this system (we play like once every month or two) let alone two painted demo forces.

Cheers to all who are working hard, however. Games with a vast amount of troops are very, very hard to promote. People love trying it, hesitant to buy it.

So far I've demoed the game for 3 people and of them all have bought into Runewars. I truly think this game is something special and when given the chance wins people over. Its a great entry level miniatures game.

What Runewars requires in painting, due to so many Miniatures, it makes up for in simplicity of assembling figures. It's amazing how much more complex other Miniatures games are when it comes to assembling figures. Runewars is cheaper, and the figures look great.

I have my own YouTube channel about Runewars and have even collaborated with another channel to promote this game.

I encourage anyone else who feels passionately about Runewars to put yourself out there. When you play a match and display your enthusiasm people will be hooked on the experience :).

Maybe this was a bad weekend with the holiday. I've got a table set up with the core/army box armies for all 4 factions set up to demo the game today at my FLGS. Been here around 2.5 hours.

A few people have poked their head in and taken a look, but that's it. Store has sold Runewars products, today even. A guy who just plays at home with his wife. Another person has the Uthuk box on hold. We advertised as soon as the Uthuk release date was known.

I know of 3 other people that play locally. I'm hoping sometime soon I can rope some people together and get a regular thing going.

No new converts today, though :(

I don't really think the amount of models to paint is more that a 40k game. It's been a while since I looked at a 40k game, so I could be wrong.

Thanks! I had to borrow the Daqan army from a friend that stopped playing once Legion was announced. We forgot about unit cards. He and I both played Waiqar, and I definitely don't need his Waiqar stuff, but I've considered buying his Daqan off of him. The rest of it is mine. I really do love this game.

Stops playing a game... because another game (that won't be available to play for literally months and is only superficially similar) is announced.

I quit.

I'm sure he would still play Runewars with what he owns if I asked him to, but he's made the personal decision that he can't afford to keep up with both Runewars and Legion and anticipates liking Legion more. So he's put Runewars on a hard hold. Didn't even buy Death Knights for his Waiqar army.
