Lest we forget Destiny is selling VERY well (I think it was Q2 this year where it moved past Pokemon into the #2 sales slot in CCGs). And event attendance has been high. So there are players.

The bigger challenge is going to be keeping people spending money while keeping the game affordable. If people are able to sit tight the spending stops and the game no longer is a profit engine. If it is too much money to play competitively then players are scared off. And this is why FFG is trying to in effect please both worlds with the three different competition strata.

The Infinite format works for anyone who has cards. The Trilogy format is for those entering Destiny or those who prefer building from the smallest pool while Standard appeals more to those who may not want the biggest pool but also want to get a little more life out of their cards. Time will tell how this approach works.

I have to admit I am tempted to focus on Trilogy play once it is active simply because I like working with smaller card pools.

I agree the game is doing well, but where do you get figures that it's outselling Pokemon? And is it magic or Yugioh in the top slot?

I am also very interested in where you got the information that Destiny outsold pokemon? please add sources next time. All sale reports I found have Destiny in 4th place behing magic, pokemon and yugioh:

its weird, i know theyre still played but i havnt seen ANY pokemon/yugioh gamers since i was a teen. Magic is all over the bloody place though and theyre kinda obnoxious about being known theyre playing magic at that.

Though i dont know many destiny players either. Every local event i find in an hour area of me has maybe 2 people thats not in my 5man group of buds for this game. Heck last one didnt even have any, it was literally just the 5 of us. Kinda sad because i'd love some new faces but at the same time none of us are really try-hards so we do a lot of goofy crap (heck i have a hera/finn deck with quadjumpers and atsts....hera the quadjumper, quadjumper ability to pay 3 for the ATST...getting an ATST out turn1 is amusing)

Pokemon puts out +1 sets and +dozens of side products compared to Destiny in the same period of time. Pokemon is also a huge collectible item, so you have a lot of nonplaying purchasers as well.

Destiny would have to eclipse Pokemon in players by a substantial margin before it's sales could compete with Pokemon as a result of the above. I don't see either happening ever.

But not beating out the Big 3 CCGs isn't a bad thing. Destiny will be hugely successful if it can just hang on to that number 4 slot for awhile, as nothing has.

True about the nonplayer buyers.

Lot of my friends happen to HAVE a large collection of the old old pokemon cards they just never play the game. Or even know the rules. Though i dont think any of them still buy the cards.

Extent of my pokemon TCG experience is the gameboy game lol....

Star Wars is also a huge collectible item, so I see the potential that it outsells pokemon. I am not saying it is likely to ever happen, but it could happen. I think right now it has no shot at outselling any of the 3 top ccgs, but I think that a big factor in that is that SW: Destiny is not available in mass market shops. So if Destiny ever gets into the mass market shops it might have a shot.
