Rogue Traders Personal pet

By Jarrion_Zukov, in Rogue Trader

If you Rogue Trader aquired personal pet, either a tamed beast to aid him in battle or somthing that shows a level of prestige what would it be.

Remember to be creative and think big

One of my players is trying to tame an orc specifically as a pet... it's not going well for him, but it is funny.

Kroot bird is a good one. there's even a mini if you can find one.

I believe the Radical's Handbook has a section on Bestial Allies...

Not the Rogue Trader, but the Seneschal has grown incredibly found of a odd little thing he picked up on his first visit to Port Wander; an Azure Narcoferret. An odd long almost serpentine creature with similar characteristics to that of a rodent mixed with a cat and about a foot in length. It has deep Azure fur, a coloration caused mostly by the thick oils it secretes when scared which, on many creatures, are deadly poisonous in small doses. However, it takes contact with a copious amount of the oil to become poisonous to a human. For your average human, the effects of contact wit the oils is usually a mild feeling of well being and seeing most any pattern as "swimming". The higher the concentration of oil, the more powerful the hallucinogenic effects.

This actually started as an odd toss-away creation i had made over a year ago for one session of our DH game for an odd scum to be smuggling into a system, but one of my players remembered the damned thing and sought one out. Her character, who tends to have a very contented smile most of the time if not out-right blown pupils, is trying to bring shoulder-pets back into fashion at the ports with his Narco-ferret and is entertaining ideas of starting a breeding program and distribution network once the other suppliers are muscled out of business.

After watching "the Ruins" (mediocre but orginal horrorfilm of recent time) I think it would be "40K-fancy" to have a plant nesting under your skin, sapping away nutrients from your blood (and lowering Toughness thereby!) but having colorfull blooms emitting a very pacifing fume (which will give you the Talent "Talented:Charm"). Of course, the wearer itself is rendered rather immun to the effects due to overexposure (after (5-TB) weeks), but will get a +3 bonus on any "Fear"-Check.

The plant could hail from a fringe world where it has a natural symbiosis with a dogsized creature looking much like a furry demisphere with four radial legs attached and covered in many round toothless mouthes with frog-like tounges. The plant lures insects near, the creature feeds on the insects and the plant "feeds" on the creature.

Hmm...this creatures could make good pets as well... ever had a walking mix of furry pet, a flower pot and a insect-controll-system as a pet?

The pets you have all listed are interesting, but you got to really have guts to try and tame an orc. Still i have to wonder how they caught it in the first place.

and who doesn't love a toxic ferrets, cats that form mental links and parasitic plants

The great thing about a pet ork is that after awhile people are gunna be scratching their heads wondering just where the hell all these squigs and gretchin are coming from in the air vents when it starts dropping spores

I noticed the Gryinx up and vanished suddenly after a midnight visit to GW headquarters by a combined legal team from several sci-fi authors. Ooops.

How about a Mahmoot? Essentially an oversized wooly mamoth with two trunks, four tusks and a howdah. For when you want an arrival that says.... boys outing.

What instantly leaps to mind is... can I have my own Saarlak? (return of the Jedi) Can I fit it in the ship? Yes & Yes!

on a more moderate note... I'm going for a Sabre-Wolf – Custom Bred Apex Predator!

Bah! Every-one and their brother has one of those. Ho-hum. You want to be feared and unique, get a Phyrr Cat, now that will raise some eye-brows and potentially out preform the wolf... if it doesn't eat you first.

I guess it depends if you are a cat or dog person gui%C3%B1o.gif

On second thoughs - what about a carnisaur...

Though I'm still keen on the mighty saarlak

Take a Fenksworld PitThing (see Creatures Anathema, DH) instead. The are very simliar build, the stats are there, they are somehow producing an aura of raw !HATE! (that will give psykers a headache) ...and they are illegal! No better way to emphasize your "standing" compared to the rest of the imperium.

The Pit Thing is closer to a rancor than the sarlacc. It would still make an awesome pet, though.

Full grown sarlacci are 100 meters long, and need to be buried as per their physiology. I certainly wouldn't put it past a rogue trader to design a room on their ship with over 100 meters of sand just to somehow get a sarlacc in there.

Thanks, crow.

Somehow, I still get the two of them (Rancor / Sarlacc) confused..not that they are similiar...but they are both "this pit beast from StarWars". Well, one of them more literal then the other.

Just because....

Sarlacc Nest (Ship Pet):
Several holds have been converted to house this monstrous xenos creature and an observation platform and plank feeding structure. Permanently increase crew moral by 2, Permanently reduce crew by 5.

Negotiations taking place on the observation platform (intimidate tests) gain a +10, those conducted on the feeding planks gain one automatic success.

If this component takes a critical hit roll 1d10 and reduce crew points and moral by this number imediately. Roll again after the current combat is completed and once per week until this component is repaired.

Power: 1
Space: 3
SP: 1

I'd want 4000 Arrakeen sandtrout (or one sandworm, it'd probably work out about the same)...

I envision something like the following:

Rogue Trader Crassus Linicius keeps a large nest of Vaporian Golden Polypides in his personal palace complex aboard his ship the Providence Incarnate . These golden shelled creatures are long insect-like burrowing creatures with irredescent golden shells and thousands of tiny legs. The Golden Polypide lays soft black eggs approximately the size of a human eyeball. These eggs (if fresh) are highly prized halucinagens and intoxicants and are served as a delicacy for the most favoured of guests at the Rogue Trader's masquerade balls.

The polypedes themselves can vary in size between a few centimetres and over twenty metres. They are carnivores, with a highly toxic bite from their impressively sized mandibles. Crassus himself often attends gatherings and official functions with a long juvenile Polypide wrapped several times around his waist like a belt with the head (firmly secured and drained of venom) draped over his shoulder. He will occasionally take a deliberate pause to feed the beast a morsel from his plate, usually distracting and wrongfooting his opponent in conversation or debate.

That Saalack is GREAT! It also have a very james bond feel - like a tank of Piranas or Sharks with Lasers!

Sharks, surgically/genetically modified to swim in the oceans of a zero-G compartment rather than water. With frikkin' Bale Eyes attached to their frikkin' heads. I'm so doing this.

Or I'll just settle for mutated Spectoris Bass...

It's not the gravity that would be the biggest issue with sharks (or any fish) but the need for aerated water to constantly pass over the gills so it could breath. Frikkin cool idea though Scott...

Reverse-Redole-Rebreathers?

Would be an extremely costly venture and a bit of a ***** to operate on some sharks, but hey, that's what Rogue Trader's all about! gran_risa.gif

I think the Saarlac and the sharks are cool, but if you want a real challenge, how about an Alien? Keeping it restrained would be interesting (drag it along behind the ship frozen in vacuum is probably the safest) and as long as its male you wouldnt have to worry about it nesting in the ship. It would be good for morale (well if they arent happy they can be on feeding Fluffy duty) The mind boggles with what you could gestate them in though... orcs, genestealers hmmm.....
