Is this game even Worth playing?

I think you need to decide what you want from this game.

If it is just a fun game with a small variety of deck building options then it doesn't need to cost too much. You could probably have a few nice decks just by having 1 of each of all of the starters available once Legacies is released. Plus if you can get into a gaming community you will probably find that a lot of the more hard core collectors have a ton of duplicates that they may give you for free to get more people into the game. This is something I have done and actively encouraged at my FLGS.

If you want to play competitively, then that is a different story and will probably cost you considerably more as you will either need to buy a couple of boxes to get what you want or for a specific deck build buy cards individually.

If you want to collect the whole set it will cost much more. There are several serious collectors at the store I go to and not one of us has a complete set of a minimum of 1 of each card.

Another good idea is to maybe get into it with a friend and that way you can split the cost and will have someone you could play against regularly.

I think part of this is that I beat my friends pretty easily, but can't quite win tournaments. I'm not trying to be that guy who has to win tournaments all the time, still, it is kind of annoying if you win against your friends but not at tournaments..... Where do you go then?

Get better friends. Haha sorry bad joke.

I would try to find out if I'm loosing at tournament because of skill or is my deck weak. If it's the deck you could look at getting g singles that strengthen it. If it's skill, you have to find people better than you to get better.

Join the discord channel to chat with pros, get TTS to get a broader player base to get better. Generally the more you play the better you get.

This is an interesting twist to the conversation. Are you beating your friends because you are better at the game than they are? Or is it because you have access to more/better cards than they do?

If you are a better player than they are, try to bring them up to your level. Explain why you do the things you do in game and ask them to explain their choices and then present them with alternatives they might not have thought of. The trick here is to help them grow, without being condescending or patronizing.

If your friends get better, they’ll present more of a challenge and make you have to work harder for your wins, which makes you a better player as well and possibly gives you more of a chance in your local tournament scene.

Now if either of those situations (with friends or tourney) is due to deck building options from the size of your respective collections this links back to the original post. You’d have to make a choice: do I want to win at tournaments? Or would I rather have fun playing with friends? The second option can be handled if you all agree to spend about the same on the game, you’ll have a fairly level playing field. If you want to win tournaments, the most cost effective way to do it is probably to pick a good deck and buy the singles you need to make it, the obvious downside here is that if you’re already beating your friends regularly, it’s not gonna get much better when you are playing a tournament winning deck.

Try to figure out what it is you like about Destiny and in what setting (fun with friends, competitive tournaments) and try to find a way to work this into your financial situation (if indeed you decide you like the game enough to keep playing it)

Can you share a bit more about the tournament scene local to you? What sort of decks have been winning? Do the winners both play with skill and have access to a larger pool of cards (what can you learn from them)? As with any dice game, it does come down to rolls. But you have your work cut out for you if these players are putting Ancient Lightsabers and Force Speeds in every deck. Playing more does help. You will become familiar with the strategies of various cards and their combos. Also of interest is who to target first when playing against certain decks. There are trade offs and risks in terms of what you can take away when killing off one of their characters. Go after two dice, or a strong single die with an innate action ability.

As much as i like this game, it should have been an LCG.

Agreed. It could have been so much more.

I doubt we would have a crazy meta with an LCG rather we would have had a period where almost everyone played Poe/Maz or FN/Phasma yeah that would have been fun for all.

Plus the slower rate of releases would have probably had us just playing Poe/Maz about now.

Ashes is a comparable game with a LCG model, and around here it may as well not exist, no-one is playing it and with the very stagnate release schedule I can't see that changing at all. Which is a pity because it is a pretty and interesting game.

Destiny wouldn't have worked in it's current format as an LCG. It's not really comparable as it would have to be an entirely different game.

I don't think Ashes is a very good comparison either, as it's a relatively small developer with a new IP making a game and trying to target a competitive playerbase. Destiny is a relatively large developer with one of the biggest IP's in the world trying to target a casual playerbase.

All of you make excellent points. If it was an LCG it would make better causal play though. I guess I just didn't think of the other complications.

We already have a LCG... Destiny is there to scratch a different itch. I see lots of posts with people saying how it should have been a LCG its not.... it never will be... move on and either enjoy the fact it's a CCG or go and collect the Star Wars LCG

Yeah man, I'm still getting folks into the game, but luckily as the card pool grows the relative power of legendaries decrease. Thats why from here on out I'm buying the occasional pack and mostly getting singles.

This... I'll buy a box of Legacies, but thats it. Singles are way cheaper given that there is maybe one or two "money cards" per set... Awk had Vader, SoR had Force Speed, and EaW had Ancient Lightsaber.

I think Night Sniper is pretty darn close to AL by the time its all said and done.

Heck, why even buy the box? I have complete Awakenings set, an almost complete SoR set, and found I only needed to buy a few singles from EaW. I'll do the same with Legacies. I might buy the new Starters.

I play casual and hope the Destiny app that FFG is working on has a nice single player and multiplayer experience. I understand that means buying packs that can only be played using IOS/Android but if there is a good enough single player option I am all in.

Think of something like Hearthstone but done using Destiny, think of how many people would buy that? Not only a nice single player mode but add in online multiplayer and this would send this Destiny app over top. This would be a dream come true and what I hope the FFG Destiny app is going to be like.

Do you have a link to the Destiny App announcement?

I think I would be very thrilled at multi-player co-op, raid on the Death Star, attack on Yavin or oops I fell into Jabba the Hutts' pit and have to get out.
