Would you play an Imperial Firespray if it had one of these titles?

I'm another person who likes using the Imperial Firespray but feel it can be a little underwhelming at times. It's pretty solid but takes a fair bit of practice to get the most out of it (something I haven't quite managed to do yet). Teaming it up with the right ships can be tricky as it feels like it should be a solo-operator. You can also end up spending a lot of points trying to use every upgrade slot, making it potentially a jack-of-all-trades ship that won't be the best at any of them.

I've tried Boba Fett with just VI and Navigator, which was interesting but lacked punch, but most of my success with it has been with Kath Scarlett, who I build to be a stress and ion-token dishing out machine. Tried her paired with Echo, Whisper and Kylo Ren's shuttle and had 50/50 success with the latter, but I don't think it was that good a list and needs improvement. I'm probably going to use Rexlar Brath with her next.

I'm not sure about allowing small-base ship upgrades, as while Juke and a few others would probably be OK I'm sure at some point there will be something that breaks it. Adding a crew or system slot would be my preferred fix (I'd love to be able to put Rebel Captive AND Tactician on Kath) but in the case of the crew slot I'd have a hard time thematically saying the Scum Firesprays shouldn't get the same benefit. The system slot (or Tech!) would make more sense as it could be given to them by their Imperial paymasters. The other obvious one would be to allow them Illicit upgrades, since it's effectively a Scum ship in the Imperial faction.

Just give it a free/discount title that lets it take either a free action barrel roll or clear stress at the beginning of its activation

Yeah, a system slot would be nice. Fettigator would be a good meta call right now, except lack of mods on the dice :/

"Title - 3 Points

Prisoner Transport

You may equip a second title.

Your upgrade bar gains an extra (crew) slot.

You may equip crew of any faction. If you do equip a "Rebel Only " or "Scum Only" crew, this crew costs +1 extra squad points."

The idea is as a prisoner transport, anyone can be on the Firespray lol. Also, that would let you take Palp, or Rey, or Dengar, etc.! Or even Jabba for no good reason...

And Imperial Firespray fix should give a crew slot to be used with a unique Scum crews only. Maybe with a -3 points discount.

Agreed. Build it cheap and it's surprisingly effective.

My personal favourite at the moment is Kath Scarlet, Slave 1, A Score To Settle, Agent Kallus, Long Range Scanners.

For 40 points, it's one heck of a one-on-one duellist; picking up a target lock for free at long range, and with essentially permenant offensive and defensive focus, and landing a stress token whenever its opponent dodges the attack.

Agreed. The 'three bounty hunters' was my first ever squad, and it's fun to use.

  • It's the one firespray-esque thing really unique to the Imperials and hence a fix that doubles down on it (by reducing the cost of upgrades) would be cool.
  • It would need to be a "the total cost of your upgrades is reduced by"
    • Free 1 point upgrades is fine in theory but they are very limited in what they can take - basically Thread Tracers, intelligence officer (irrelevant without repositoning), Inspiring Recruit, Tractor Beam, Munitions Failsafe and wouldn't really benefit the ship that much compared to - say - the fifteen odd free cards a quintet of Vaksai can bring.
    • Multiple 2-point or more upgrades free would quickly become unsustainably harsh
    • Limiting the discount to one or two specific slots kind of ruins the point of the firespray's immense customisability
  • If it had 'the total cost of your equipped upgrades is reduced by X squad points', I'm not sure what X would need to be to make the Imperial Firespray competetive.
    • Maybe 3 points? I know the Recon Specialist was always a good choice; if you could equip that free it's a heck of a lump of capability.
    • The same discount would allow an Ion cannon, Cruise Missiles & Guidance Chips (but no long range scanners if it's a title), Seismic Torpedoes & Tractor Beam - enough to meaningfully boost the ship's capability without turfing over any game-changing capability like a heavy laser cannon

Slave 1 title should give Barrel roll and Boost. That's good enough, frees up the mod spot for Chips or something else and also makes it really maneuverable.

How about this:

Title: First Order Retrofit

You may equip 2 titles. Your ship gains a tech slot upgrade and the barrel roll action. The cost of secondary weapons is reduced by 1.

I'd love a way to give Firesprays, U-Wings and IG-2000s the ability to equip small-ship only upgrades. I don't think any of them would break the game with that capability.

I had a original and fun firespray fix idea several months ago I posted on here.

It was a title called "Illegal Transponder". And it would let you take a 2nd title from any ship of any faction. The fluff explanation being that the firespray is pretending to be another ship on enemy scopes, though gaining those ship's abilities doesn't make sense of course, it's more for gameplay fun.

At the time I thought a couple titles might be a bit broken on it. Namely the Arc170 & Tie S/F titles.

But since there have been no good fixes/buffs for it lately, and it continues to fall behind the curve as more new ships come out and other ships get fixes first, maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all to have any title available.

Let's review all the titles:

A-Wing - 2nd (or 1st) EPT is nice
Aggressor - Slightly better than using the IG crew since it keeps crew slot open
Attack Shuttle - Useless
ARC-170 - Very strong option
Decimator - Probably not worth it
G1A - Decent to get barrel roll for 1 point I guess (if you take tractor)
HWK-290 - Decent
Jumpmaster - Not worth the cost
Kihraxz - Solid option
Lambda - Not worth it when you can take Slave 1 with LRS
Lancer - Useless
Protectorate - Same trigger as fearlessness, which I find hard to use more than once a game on the firespray
Scurrg - Decent if you prefer systems slot over crew, and you gain the astro
Scyk - Heavy is basically useless, Light would be bad news
Starviper - Unique isn't super great, Generic is nice for the 3 point discount even if you can't barrel
Tie Advanced - Solid option
Tie Advanced Prototype - Good option
TIE Bomber - Decent
TIE Defender - x7 would have been strong pre-nerf, now it's just decent at best because of large base, tie/d would be very strong though

So Arc170 and Tie S/F would be the top two for sure. Kihraxz, Tie Advanced, and Tie Defender (D) would probably be the next best options otherwise. A few others are decent, but most are useless or not that great for the firespray.

XG-1: borderline useless

OS-1: Straight upgrade over slave 1 title. Meh option

I love it! I think the G1-A is actually a great option for the ship - only one point for a barrel roll action is great, and the Tractor Beam is a free upgrade (doesn’t fill your cannon slot).

I've thought about this, and my thought was that generic titles shouldn't be allowed, mostly because of the /sf and ARC, but there aren't any unique titles that would break anything.

I put it as a modification - Stolen Transponder Codes, 2 points, you may ignore restrictions when equipping Unique Title upgrades. You cannon equip more than one unique Title upgrade. Makes the Firespray way more interesting to fly.

The issue is still that the Imperial version has inferior Pilot abilities, no acces to Illicit upgrades and yet still cost the same as the Scum version.
