Huh, so first Devs are so competent they could never print a card that would be too strong, but now it's too much credit to expect them to design keeper/seeker cards purposefully.

Don't think anyone's actually said that first part but sure whatever.

It was implied at least once, but in all fairness, you never claimed that, so there's no inherent contradiction.

Theres playing by houserules and if this community is not planning on running OP events then yes, it is not cheating. If they are planning on playing sponsored OP events, then yes, it is cheating because they are ignoring known rules that are published and have an assumption of play. If people come from out of town and find they can play in an event (I do this when I travel for work), they are not going to have the same construction of their deck. They may have an assumption of play for their opponent that is suddenly invalid because that player is not playing cards they are supposed to have.

That still isn't cheating, unless they're deliberately withholding that information from others. "Cheating" is a very loaded term with connotations that not only is someone breaking the rules, but they're doing so with deliberate intent to gain an advantage. It is not synonymous with "misplaying" or "using house rules."

To be fair, no matter what role was chosen, there would be cards you can't play.

Which is why some people aren't in favor of the system at all.

You can still use those cards, just play another clan to use them.

That ignores that there are clan-specific cards affected by the roles. Some cards cannot be used by anyone if the correct role is not chosen.

Sheesh. If you don't like the new roles, that's your prerogative but don't take a dump all over everyone else's parade.

I think the mechanics of seeker and keeper roles and corresponding cards are just new to everyone. There may be some knee jerk reactions going on about how it will affect someone's personal experience, but let's be fair, there is a lot of interest for tournament play, both locally and globally.

I personally like to make my decks to reflect what I would do in a competitive environment and I don't want to buy extra core sets to have to build a non-competitive ready deck to play with the other cards that I buy in Dynasty packs.

Additionally, the people I play with aren't as interested in playing against these decks.

So, why there is a freedom to build these unofficial role decks, I have little desire to jump through the additional hoops to do so. This increases the frustration of some players that don't agree with how the roles are currently determined.

Don't get me wrong, I am fan of how FFG is promoting this game (and wish they would put this much effort in their other LCGs), but I completely understand why some players feel the way they do.

Would it have been too much to have let there be a vote for one Role at the beginning for each clan and then run tournaments to unlock a second role (basically reverse how they are doing it now)?

I think this keeper seeker role stuff is fantastic. As someone who is currently creeping, because of worlds, this stuff about tournament winners deciding roles for a year really adds spice to it all. So much more interesting.

No other game I know has an impact on players that go to worlds. So now everyone has a vested interest in the outcomes, a reason to care about worlds. People will be unhappy with choices sometimes, I think this shows a passion for the game.

This is possibly the biggest factor I've gone from L5R hard pass, to well maybe payday I'll go buy a box an try this out!

Not sometimes, but always. There will always be someone who's not okay with the decisions made. That's life.

Silverfox,

There will always be cards in the packs you can't play, especially if you have no desire to make multiple decks. This isn't exactly an argument against the roles.
