Jet Pack crafting

By 9littlebees, in Game Masters

One of my players wants to craft a jet pack. I've looked through Special Modifications, but I'm not happy that the gadget section really works for one. For starters, the material price seems too low.

Has anyone experienced jet pack crafting in their game, and if so, which template did you use?

It also isn’t adding small skill boosts like gadgets do.

If GM wants to allow crafting of it the general rule is to halve the price for the components, and reduce rarity by one. For difficulty I’d suggest quite high (4 or 5) and don’t allow schematics to be made. Come to agreement on what you want advantages and triumphs etc to be spent on.

Schematics in general are ultra powerful. Though if you want to remove them from one thing, I would suggest the remove them in general from your game.
Another option would be to allow taking schematics as option, but in that case increase the time it takes by a significant factor, representing time to analyse and improve on the technology in question and actually drawing schematics and your very own design templates.

The rules themselves don't go into much detail into that kind of stuff as they assume limited time for crafting in the first place.

For the Jetpack:
Table 3-14 seems actually rather fitting for a jetpack as well, just increase the price as suggested by Darzil, and keep in mind that a jetpack is a "simple" tool as the jetpack is what allows flight and thus what allows the Piloting: Planetary checks in the first place.
Considering the rarity of jetpacks and jumping boots, I would assume a Daunting mechanics check as base, similar to how the rarity 6 cybernetics are daunting.

Thanks for the ideas, I think I'll go with your combined advice.

Jet Pack

Materials : 2,300Cr/6

Difficulty : Daunting (4d) Mechanics check

Time : 3 days (72hr)

Symbol Spend : Gadget Table 3-14 (Special Modifications, p84)

Note : Will probably tweak Table 3-14 to show different results in the 4A/1T row. I'm thinking of adding +1 Handling or +2 System Strain to the existing Inbuilt Weapon (IW will make the jet pack Restricted, basically if any law enforcement spot it, they will confiscate or try to arrest the PC if they resist).

The title of this post brought back wonderful SWG memories. Thank you for that even though I'm sure that wasn't your intention.

Fully Operational will have rules for this if they can wait.

After watching Rebels I feel like Jetpacks were sorely underutilized in previous material lol. A jetpack turns you into peter pan. You can fly you can fly you can flyyy! Maybe Disney will convert the old Peter Pan ride into the Mandalorian Jetpack ride.
