Beware of the Backdraft...

Hi Folks! Hope all is well ^_^ .

I just had a game this afternoon with my 7 year old son and I actually had a victory for a change! (He's quite clever, he normally wins - takes after his Mom). Anyways, I tried out a new pilot, "Backdraft" and also an upgrade that I haven't used yet:

I had Backdraft equipped with Predator, Sensor Jammer, Sensor Cluster & Cloaking Stealth Device and wow! What a cool pilot! With some awesome defensive capabilities and amazing offensive capabilities, he's quickly becoming one of my favourite pilots. I had him fly as squadron leader with two Gamma Squadron Veterans and they worked very well together. My son was foiled by a lot of attempts on Backdraft and when it was all said and done, I still had one Bomber left and one shield left on Backdraft. The Sensor cluster is amazing! Because I had Predator, I could keep my focus token just in case, and with Sensor Jammer turning one of his hits to a Focus, and Sensor Cluster turning one of my blanks into an evade, it worked like a charm! Plus I got good at positioning Backdraft to being able to take two shots from his Auxiliary Firing Arc and being able to add a critical hit twice (once per attack) wow! Amazing. I actually think that this pilot is in line with Vader's capability. Highly, highly recommend this pilot along with Sensor Cluster, very, very capable.

Well, thanks for reading :D ! Cheers and God bless.

[Edit : wrong device - meant Stealth]

Awesome to see so much enthusiasm and great to see you introducing the game to your boy, my little one is only 2 months old but I'm really looking forward to getting him into everything SW :D

You mentioned shooting twice with Backdraft, as a clarification did you shoot out his rear twice in the same round??

Do you mean Stealth Device instead of Cloaking Device? Cloaking Device is essentially Scum only right now since its an illicit upgrade. Lightweight Frame is better than Stealth Device, since it essentially gives you the same agility value but you don't lose it. Also as a bonus its a point cheaper.

BCooper is right. The wording on Special Ops Training is a bit confusing, but you cannot fire twice out of one arc. What is essentially allows you is a choice of attacking out of your primary arc without adding an attack die in exchange for an opportunity to attack out of your rear arc. You make the primary arc attack first then the rear arc. Backdraft is good at taking advantage of this since he can add that crit out of the rear.

There is one specific occasion where perfect piloting (with a barrel roll or with luck) can get you the extra crit on BOTH attacks - when your rear and front arc can see the same large or huge ship (: your front attack gets the bonus crit too!

But as others mentioned, its impossible to shoot out the back twice in the same turn unless you're Quickdraw ;) (and then, its at his loss because he gets no bonus from shooting in the aux. arc)

Option A: Primary Firing Arc with selected weapon, +1 Dice for primary weapon

Option B: Auxiliary Arc with Primary weapon (Backdraft bonus +1 Crit)

Option C: Primary Firing Arc (first!), at 2+range bonus dice followed by Auxiliary Arc (second! always!), at 2+range bonus dice (Backdraft bonus here)

Good point. I kind of forgot about that. It is pretty hard to pull off though.

Hey congrats! That's great ^_^ . Children are such a blessing. Don't underestimate how early you can teach kids new stuff, my boy has been playing X-wing with me since he was 6.

Yup! When I was able to, other wise I rolled 3 dice out my front arc.

Whoops! Yes I meant to say Stealth Device and not Cloaking Device - my mistake :) . I don't have Lightweight Frame (yet - two on order, should be here this week) but even if I did have it here, I think I would still have chosen Stealth Device, as my son had chosen ships that only had 2 attack dice.

Arrrgghhh! Yes, after doing some more research online it seems that I am indeed mistaken and incorrect  . Sigh...I had to tell my boy that his Dad was disqualified and therefore his winning streak continues...sigh... :D .

Tssk...yup, I goofed. I'm normally pretty good on interpreting the rules...but...not this time!

I highly encourage light weight frame and since you save the stealth device point by getting LWF you can equip expertise to especially stick to the important focus for sensor cluster. I have flown many a build like you described with fire control system instead of the jammer. It is a great and expensive to kick but!!!

That's awesome! BackDraft is on of my favorite pilots.
