An open letter to FFG regarding Regionals

Sorry mate, as far as I'm concerned the majority should have rule here. The majority of players find a holiday weekend a outright **** time to schedule an event.

I contacted 3 major groups before we got our approval and asked whether they'd come, before the date was revealed, confirmed all yes. Now, I have 5 confirmed "no" and quite a few unanswered, from the looks of it. The entirety of the Columbus group won't be out. Many of the Cleveland area members are the ones confirmed "no" and I'm fairly certain the PA group, including @BiggsIRL and his guys are considering WV over OH because of the dates.

All I was saying is that to you it is a major butt hurt, but to others (myself included) it would be a good day to hold it. Now I will not be showing up as not my region, but you may get some who could not have shown up on a different weekend.

Listen, this isn't a attempt to brag but I'm one of the guy who's actively working to bridge our groups. I'm going to be there after trading several favors around. With a bit of luck, several of us will be waiting to challenge you.

I'm really happy that the Reno crew is going to be represented. I am. But your players have come at the cost of at least 6 of the most prolific and consistent Armada players more locally who can't attend. This isn't even about local vs regional or national. This is about a net 2 player drop, 2 players who are critical to our local scene. God willing it stays that limited.

Shortly into January we have another 3 day American weekend with Presidents Day and MLK day. Plenty of events could and will occur that weekend. This would have been a great opportunity, announced well in advance, for a tournament. And I bet most of your players could have attended with a bit of hard work to get time off.

And by the way, we're really anticipating rolling out the bloodstained red carpet for you lot. Do you realize how starved we are for fresh, succulent meat? I don't think I've clubbed a baby seal to death since August and nobody has tried my bounty yet.

I understand working to bridge the groups together, I am working hard at it too (I am sure we have crossed paths on the Facebook groups). I am right there with the whole northern Cal and northern Nevada groups getting together to throw down from time to time to build a huge community. I realize the time frame sucks, and I know our area is struggling. I have seen that 6 will not be making it. I hope for a solid turn out so that we can keep Armada growing in our area.

Oh, and roll that carpet out, you will need it for the end of the day...

We don't even have a regionals in my country :D

They're basically the same thing as your Nationals. :)

@Darth Sanguis I disagree with your position about where scheduling responsibilities should lie, but I really respect your passion for the game and the community. I sincerely hope this isn’t “it” for you.

I’ll be at the MI regional (I’m local), but I’m now planning on coming down to Ohio as well just to bolster your numbers and get another game in. It’s only three hours from me to you, I did it spontaneously when a friend in cuyahoga falls had an emergency once. I look forward to meeting you.

Nah, as peeved as I get (and I really do), I'm a level headed person. I enjoy the game enough to stick it through.

We'll be glad to have ya! We're slated for up to 32 I think we're only at about 14 people at the moment, so you'll be well received haha. That said, I wouldn't worry too much about skill (unless you get paired against @BiggsIRL lol).

Last i heard, at least one is planning on going, but as far as I know many of the Columbus players who usually travel to play, myself included, won't be. FWIW some of them don't play any more so the date wouldn't have mattered, but that's the reason most aren't. We have a few newer players, not sure of their plans, maybe they will.

Hopefully your turn out is good

As an aside I have to say this thread and the vitriol that's being directed towards you and the OP underscores what I think holds this game/community back more than anything. Oh well.

Thanks for your efforts.

It's good to hear we'll have someone from southern Ohio showing up. I haven't heard anything from the Cinci folks either, but I'm guessing there's a similar theme.

Thanks for your support man.

Last regionals in Florida was 14, 16 players? I hear these numbers up north and I'm amazed. I'll probably go again, but it's a three hour drive...hmm.

I know my former playing partner from when I lived in Cincy won't make it up, and I think he's the most likely out of anyone down there to make the drive. But we'll see! I'll share the event in their local FB group.

I think ultimately they need to expand the regionals by at least one more store per region. I think that so many people are looking at a 4+hr ride to attend an event is kind of lousy. Not to mention it's going on in the pit of winter for us in the northern regions.

The date thing is a shame, but I'm more upset they limit it to Saturday's only. Especially when Armada tends to get shuffled to Thursday/Friday at larger events anyways and since our timeframe to host the event is littered with holidays that can interfere with attendance anyways.

Is reduced numebers because of the "guaranteed seat" system, maybe?

I mean, they want worlds to be populated by good players, but they also want it to be open to the public... If you're worlds-ing up with only so many competitors, what percentage of those do you want to be "Guaranteed Seats" for those Regional / National winners ?

Armada already sells out so quickly in the public domain... Restricting the number of Regionals has the follow-on effect of providing more available seats for general populace purchaseability...

Of course, its hardly the way I'd go about it... But is it a potential, at least follow-on reason?

I didn't think it out like that. But it's definitely very reasonable. I suppose the counter would be to expand your Armada Nationals because you clearly have some demand for it. That or reach out to those who win a regional to confirm if they are coming or not. That way you can have a firm number of slots.

Probably not going to happen. Armada is not X Wing so, go pound sand. Also I don't think it's a problem for me. I go to Regionals for the swag and to be a punching bag for those who don't suck.

I remember the Emotional rollercoaster when they first announced they were going to split the Worlds into Star-Wars and Non-Star Wars...

"Hooray! No more card games! We can expand the Floor Area for Armada and IA!"

"Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap. There goes that idea."

Memorial Day is only a thing if you're am actual veteran.

Veterans Day is a random 3 da weekend, unless you live in Hawaii or have a grandfather who fought in the Pacific theater, in which case no acknowledgement but a beer and a nod is sufficient. There are fewer than a hundred survivors of Pearl Harbor, which is what we're really acknowledging.

Memorial Day isn't for veterans.

And Veterans Day isn't just for Hawaiian Pearl Harbor survivors.

Just adding some to what TTC said, Memorial Day is in memory of those who did not come home, Veterans Day if for all of us who served not just Pearl Harbor Survivors.
