Torani Kulda - My favorite Star Wars character!

By Shadow345, in X-Wing

Remember all those adventures with Torani Kulda when watching those Star Wars movies?

I'm so glad we now have a game piece for this great character of Torani Kulda from the Star Wars movies.

The snark is strong with this one.

Not that I disagree.

You could say the same thing about the vast majority of pilots in the game ever since wave 2. Obscure character from a FFG published adventure is about as valid as an obscure character from one or two scenes in a now-defunct expanded universe.

Yeah, because everybody loves [all ships not X-Wings, TIE Fighters and the Millennium Falcon] ONLY for all those 15 minutes they were in the movies. And who could forget how many of them had names! Like Gold Leader, Y-Wing Extra #1 - the one who gets a line, and B-Wing Extra #2 - the one who doesn't get a line! Oh, and my favorite TIE fighter pilots - "guys who flew with Darth Vader and didn't speak"!

I think scum has a pretty good roster of characters. Most of the canon ones are included anyway.

OP, for real? A good 65% of the pilots in this game are nobodies.

The B-wing and A-wing each have about 5 seconds of screen time total. The TIE Bomber has about the same. The Lambda shuttle has maybe 30 seconds if you count it being landed and in a hanger as screen time. The Slave 1 actually gets a decent amount of screen time if you count the prequels. TIE Interceptor gets some decent screen time during the battle of Endor (poor B-wings didn't look good enough on the bluescreen to make it into the battle shots!)

Almost all of @Shadow345's posts are hot trash, and a waste of bandwidth.

The first time I saw the Quadjumper was in the X-wig spoiler. I then had to go back to that Jakku scene to see it in that one frame.

At the very least, up until wave 6 the pilots weren't particularly obscure, as many popular novels featured them strongly. After than, Scum really drew the short straw.

I mean, Scum's always had a bit of a short straw - many of the pilots named for ships such as the Kihraxz and Scyk are from the game they appeared in SWG. Only, y'know, they were MMO NPCs. Some of them were just basically randomly generated mobs you fight for quests. This isn't a unique problem to Scum, just most prominent to them (Countess Ryad says "hi" tho). Then again, depending on what age bracket you're in, it's entirely possible a fan of the minis game would not necessarily know names like Keyan Farlander and Maarek Steele. But there's me and my ol' context getting in the way of people being all #NotMyStarWars

Honestly though, picking the names of NPCs from the RPGs (which has been happening since the Protectorate, I think? Kad Solus and Old Teroch are both from Friends Like These) does at least have some cross promotion. If you, like me, are also a fan of the RPG line, you might read or even run some of those adventures and bump into those characters, and then you see them in the minis game and think "neat". It can even help you if you cross the two games over. All the ships those characters are in are in the RPG lines too.

A lot of pilots like Major Rymer or Mauler Mithel are originally from the Decipher CCG and then became old EU 'canon' by appearing in other products. FFG is just the latest holder of the Star Wars license. Decipher, WotC and WEG have all left their mark on the EU. Pilots like Torani Kulda are just continuing that tradition.

(yeah I know you are referring specifically to pilot obscurity but still, I couldn't pass it up :D)

I honestly don't understand this aversion to lesser known characters. So what if a character is only seen in a movie for a few seconds. That doesn't mean they aren't someone with their own story and motivations. The fact there is so much lore on bit and side characters is one of the things I love most about Star Wars. The use and fleshing out of these characters gives a better sense of scale and depth for the Star Wars Universe. So what if Torani Kulda isn't a main character from the movies. This is where she is and maybe some people will build strong memories around her in X-Wing and look upon the name fondly in the future.

Its not so much the use of previously unknown characters or secondary characters, but the lack of main character support in this game, Luke Skywalker hasn't seen the table since wave 1. Vader saw some resurgence with the release of the advanced fix, Han saw good use early on, but really, none of the primary characters are very good by current standards. Everything being used is obscure. People would be forgiven if they walked in on a worlds tournament and didn't recognize that the game was based on Star Wars, none of the icons meet competitive standards.

counterpoint: the gunboat has a following as big as anything from the movies, and it never appeared in them.......

I mean...the gunboat has a following because it didn't make it to the game for a long time.

If the tie advanced wasn't in the game for 12 waves, it would have a larger following, believe me.

And it is fine to want characters you love well represented in the game. I would love character like Luke, Vader, Wedge, and so on get more upper level play time, but when people attack lesser known characters for "not being Star Wars", they've lost me. You can love the classics without attacking a character you are unfamiliar with.

Hey, if you just want to play with recognisable characters from the films, absolutely no-one is stopping you. You can build a pretty fun squad out of Han and Luke, or Rey and Poe, or Vader and a bunch of Black Squadron Pilots.

Actually B-wing has about 20 seconds total, a-wings have 1 minute and about 30 seconds. (Rip arvel)

I'm not sure whether I'd rather have an Italian Soda, a steamed milk, or a splash in coffee...

My favorite character. Did you have the T-Shirt when you were a kid? All the cool kids did

You make a great point. I played both Star Wars and Star Trek from Decipher. I loved the flavor text (even if they made it up) and the fact that they integrated keywords from the flavor text into game mechanics. That kind of integration is great for gameplay and fandom.

Decipher at least tried to make sure the main characters, ships and equipment were the best cards. When a new expansion realeased, “mains” (that’s what we called them) frequently got new versions to keep up with new mechanics and stay on the competitive edge. Supporting and made-up content was good, but rarely (if ever) better than mains.

I will admit doing this in a miniatures game is not as simple as doing it in a card game, but many players are disappointed that FFG doesn’t even try.

So not true. He said "Look out!" just before he sideswiped Vader.

You're peeved just because we still don't have Ree Yees.

@Shadow345 tell me your master plan to make it so 'meaningful' Star Wars characters are back in the game without completely installing a bias for certain ships or pilots?

Make a character too good, people use them regardless of the lore because they are OP, if they are not good enough, they are never used. Game design is a fickle thing, in the end though Mechanics > Fluff.
