The Worst Auto-damage You'll Ever See

By Astech, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Last night it just sort of clicked - the worst Oicunn build possible. Something that just shouldn't be possible, but is. Here you go:

Captain Oicunn (55)
Engine Upgrade
Daredevil
BoShek
Dauntless
Intelligence Agent
Inspiring Recruit

Whisper (42)
Adv. Cloak
FCS
Veteran Instincts
Mara Jade

Whisper is pretty generic (and will be replaced by Kylo when he comes out). She's basically there to beat the crap out of any jousting list that has a chance against Oicunn. Where the list shines is with Oicunn:

His bumping shenanigans are pretty straightforward, except that they're doubled with Daredevil - and the wording is exactly right in case I bump into some rules lawyers. Here's the breakdown:

1. Start of combat - look at the target's dial with Intel agent.
2. Bump the ship and Daredevil for a second bump, dealing 2 automatic damage in the activation phase.
3. That ship activates and, depending on what you saw with the intel agent, you can trigger Boshek to keep them bumped.
4. Rinse and repeat.

I think this pretty much hard counters Dengar, given his low hull value and reliance on actually getting a shot. Pretty much every ace is going to die very, very quickly. And jousting lists are flattened by Whisper. I think the only thing left is fat turrets, which I'm pretty sure can't burn down Oicunn before he kills them.

So, what do you think?

I obviously don't play imps enough. Oooo... Let me make sure that I, a non-imp, get the order of operations right:

I see how the intel agent works. So then you know their plan and you can bump. After you bump, Oicunn's ability activates and does damage. Then the Dauntless Title activates, and you can perform a free action. That would be daredevil. You maneuver again, damage again, and you're left with one stress from Dauntless, one stress from Daredevil, and another stress from Dauntless. That gives you three stress, two of which gets cleared by the inspiring recruit. Boshek can then be used to wreck their maneuver by flying them off the table, tossing them into a rock, or setting up a situation where they have to behave in a predictable manner.

Do I have that right? Because if so...

It is good... but you could also add ion projector over EU. You take some damage, but can hopefully ionise them too (especially with boshek).

You could also add a couple of bombs for them to fly into once ionised :-).

If you remove EU then you can't use Daredevil, which i think is a huge part of the shenanigans going on here

It's a decimator set up that's been done before, and it is effective for awhile. You also only trigger dauntless once and end the turn at 2 stress which you clear with the inspiring recruit. Its only real downside is that you invest a lot into making sure you bump, and it's not hard to outfly a decimator that is doing a 2 bank every turn. You will probably get a few "gotcha" moments if you run it, but it doesn't take long to figure out its limitations and you end up with a large turret with a lot of unused upgrade cards. If you have a way to go all in on the bumping and bring either a tractor beam or ion effect, it can be pretty devastating. Either way, give it a shot and have fun with it!

I mean, you'll get completely wrecked against any enemy with crew-Kylo to put Stunned Pilot onto Oicunn. If you face a bunch of Kylos, a solution could be putting Intel Agent on the Phantom, and taking Moff Jerjerod on Oicunn. That'd allow you to sacrifice first BoShek then the Moff to avoid a crippling crit.

I also feel that Oicunn is a harder ship to use effectively on the board than on paper. A lot of games you won't have position to bump or double-bump, and a canny opponent can figure out ways to outfly it. I don't think it's a list which can "trade up" against higher-skilled players, and that kind of puts a ceiling on it's performance. I say this as someone who did amazing with Oicunn in a bunch of Casual games, then got wrecked at a store champ with it.

I LOVE these bumping shenanigans. However, while Whisper can certainly hit like a truck, the offense is lacking on Oicunn. If a person can avoid the bump somehow, then I think the list poses much less of a threat. I might consider removing Boshek and splitting Whisper into 2 ships, or choosing a more effective single ship who could theoretically manage on a turn that Oicunn doesn't bump. As you mentioned, Kylo would be a good choice for that, so might Quickdraw

If only there was some way to give VT-49s the SLAM action. ;)
