Paint quality dropping?

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing

My FLGS got a restock on K-Wings and other ships yesterday. One thing everyone noticed is how the paint jobs on the reprints is off. It looks like the factory neglected to give the model a wash, so the details doesn't pop as much as the first prints did. Frankly, the paint jobs looked roughly equal to Attack Wing in quality, which is not a complement.

In hindsight, I wish I'd taken a side-by-side photo of the old vs new K-Wings to illustrate what I'm talking about. Anyone else see this?

Depends on the production patch tbh; I have a Dash that has no detailing what so ever; but my friends from a different batch has it.

Perhaps they didn't put enough paint on it, and you are finally seeing how ugly the ship really is?

The ships from both my Guns for Hire packs are flipping beautiful. Just batch by batch.

So nah.

Some way, some where, some how, the sky will always be falling.

I got a scurrg with a cockpit painted beige. Looks like a drop of beige paint just splashed on my poor scurrg cockpit :( Now he blind.

"Oops." -Kylo Ren

I’ve seen discrepancies in TIE-fighter washes and paint jobs going all the way back to the first print of the original core set, so no. Likely it’s just normal variations in paint-quality.

Now the tolerances on the sizing for pegs and stands- those have definitely slipped over time.

No particular consistent pattern for quality, just the normal variation for a process like this. Best solution is to support your FLGS and buy local so you can check the models before buying and get the one you think looks best.

The printer where the ships are manufactured has an upgrade card with the "Action:" header which they activate for detailed paint jobs, and advanced slam is now action bar only now so...

We could only wish that the manufacturer had the SLAM action in order to get us product twice as fast.

No, this happened when they errata’d the Detailed Paint Job upgrade card so that now it’s an action instead of a free paint job. Now, whenever the factory is stressed or their schedule overlaps another deadline they can’t perform the free detailed paint job.

It appears that they no longer feel the need to wash and weather their models anymore. Star Wars is a used universe, not shinny and new. I'm feeling like this compliant needs to go directly to Disney. I think I'll only be buying the ships that look like the fit this universe and not Buck Rodgers

A bottle of wash is, what, $3? maybe? Dirty it on up!

Can we get done side by side pics? My new K-Wing came today and I see no difference between old and new.

Yeah, because this isn't just a lapse that happens sometimes.

What kinda cracks me up is that the colors keep changing! I have two TIE Bombers with the same packaging and same SKU, but one is grey like the original TIE Fighters and the other is blue like the Gozanti TIE Fighters!

I actually prefer the blue bomber - I just imagine that all the officers in there are Attani and Chiss with shaved heads so they look like Blue Man Group!

Upon closer inspection my new K-Wing has less defined details than the old one. Or perhaps the old one had fewer details.

Looks more like a trend to me

It made me think of a whole different definition of "dead eye" scurrg....but alas, I was behind the ball of the Kylo blinded pilot

Everybody needs their dragon.

You know, more on topic than my first post, I actually think that they paint them kinda flat on purpose , so that you can do what you want with them. Take the Caligula Fighter for example:

It’s well painted, but simple. No blue glow from the engine, no shine on the cockpit (it’s hard to tell if that’s a window or a gun!) and no wash on the cannons to indicate carbon scoring or even highlight the details! They’ve even stopped adding blaster marks, battle damage, or chips in the paint! It’s nice, because this paint is flat enough that you can just paint over it! Like I said in a different thread, I’m gonna paint my Caligulas with white wings and black and yellow stripes and name ‘em Bumblebee Squadron! ???

Stupid spellcheck. “It’s” is not the same as “its”... pet peeve

1`: This is a great way to look at it.
2: They fly more like REALLY angry hornets, for what it's worth. My dad used to pilot one- best pilot in his guild too, they always wondered how he got this big lug moving right.
