Pilot Packs (like baseball cards but sans bubblegum)

I got two GfH because I got so excited for running 3 Vipers with new toys.

I’d totally get pilot packs.

Well the whole idea behind Pilot/upgrade packs is to change pilot abilities and point costs and ship upgrades and actions to either bring a ship/pilot up or down on the power level.

As for upgrade cards that come with it I think it would be a good idea to start rotating out upgrade cards and rotate them in with the pilot/upgrade packs. If there is an upgrade that needs to be in the game (i.e. Autothrusters) you can simply put a copy of it in when that wave is up for card rotation (just like a reprint in a new edition of MTG).

The solution, then, is simple: include miniatures made out of bubble gum!

Well, that would give new meaning to "my netlist is gonna chew yours up."

I suspect the main reason that this is never gonna happen is that FFG doesn't have the manpower to do anything more than make the next wave/ace expac.

Many players are dying to get updated OT ships, and repaints of said ships would provide the perfect "typical" vehicle for updates like this.

Which is probably why the business model needs to be rethought. It might be good if it is small and slow like say Armada, but with games of increasing popularity like X-wing and even what Net Runner and GoT use to enjoy said model works perfectly. But now said model doesn't work so much. So it needs to be redone, I kind of like Kessel Runs description is that you have to keep the game fresh but it is hard with the wave being solved 2 days before release. It won't be long before forums and reddits are screaming for the next thing to be nerfed (TLT are starting to fall under fire). But again if you keep it too unpredictable it risks never catching on. But with ship creep and the demand for new models just to keep the meta fresh bring even more importance to change the business model.

So X-wing 2.0 should be cards rotate, models remain. After a few waves you print out new cards for the past wave updating the old models and phasing out both awfully bad upgrade and OP upgrades. The pilot names will stay the same as that is on the model (the cardboard tile that is) but just about everything else can be changed.

That’s the beauty of the Pilot Packs, the profits are above and beyond the normal profits for X-Wing, so in theory it should pay for a dedicated employee.

Also with most products a company needs to know how many to make. Make too many and the company looses in unsold revenue. Again, make too few and you have to eat the cost of creating another run (shipping etc), and again how many do you make in the next run?

With Pilot Packs FF knows how many ships have been sold in any given area and how many ships have been sold in total. This cuts down on a lot of the guess work and they should know exactly how many to make.

Everyone keeps saying, “I don’t see them ever doing that”, but I really don’t see why they wouldn’t.

Well never doing such a thing is a far cry, but it is a radical departure from their current production model which is so prone to accretion and with limited tools to retroactively correct the model FFG has resulted to all sorts of extreme and unsuccessful measures (5 times, still not working means failure). So maybe not going to happen bu if there was a 2nd edition of X-wing in one that takes a more proactive role with the pilot and upgrade cards implemented in the game by making them rotate (keep pilot name recycle everything else), now you will have a meta that is always in flux and what ever is on top will not stay on top. The thing is though there will still be new models and with each wave there is that many cards to rotate through.

I’m still hoping that FF hears my cries for Pilot Packs. ?

did someone say bubblegum?

Pilot Packs yay.

Double post. Oops.

I just watched a video on YouTube where the OP was stating that new players will not like to play a game where the cards they buy are defunct in package. At least with Pilot Packs there would be an option for obtaining the correct printing. Waiting for a reprint would be foolish since you never know when it will happen. Then again, aside from the core sets (who’s ships are rarely used save Omega Leader), do new players even buy the older ships?
