Poll Time: To Scale or not To Scale?

By Undeadguy, in Star Wars: Legion

I've read quite a few comments about playing the game if everything is in scale or not. My question is this...

Are you interested in Legion...

  • As a hobby? Painting, making terrain, you are less interested in the rules.
  • As a game? Throwing dice and moving troops, solid set of rules, you are interested competitive play.
  • Because it's Star Wars! Vader leading an army of Storm Troopers on Hoth attacking Echo Base, to the Rebels attacking the shield generator on Endor. You want to play just because it is Star Wars, you have little to no experience in the hobby, and don't really care about going to tournaments.

I fully expect everyone to have interest in all 3 answers, but I want to know what excites you the most. Will you pick up the game if the vehicles aren't to scale with the troops? Will you pick up the game even if you don't really like the rules?

I know I want to play for the competitive nature of the game. I'm really excited about the rules I've seen so far, and I don't care if the vehicles are perfect 1:1 with the troops. I'm not good at painting or making terrain, but I can't wait to try and paint these minis.

I am mainly excited because it is star wars. I am excited that I can get my son into a miniature game that is in an ip he is obsessed with! I like what I have seen of the rules so far. I have been considering some other games like deadzone lately. I really wanted a mini game that doesn't require a bunch of expensive rule codexes, arguing over exact measurements, takes 6 hours to play, etc. I am satisfied that the scale of the vehicles is correct. If they werent it would bother me but I would probably still get them. I most likely would not buy an AT-AT whether it was inscale or not. I don't have enough storage space for something like that. :P

All 3. As much as you want to put them in different categories, im here for those exact 3 reasons. Scale is important because i am a terrain builder. And since so far all units from wave 1 are in scale, im happy. The rules are way important. Because a balanced game is always key. Not to mention my meticulously in scale terrain has been designed along side all known rules of the game. Ans its Star Wars! My entire leg is covered in a tattoo of a medical droid from ESB. I was a Star Wars Insider fan club member since i was 10 back in 1989. So honestly, all 3. Equally.

Same as Devin.Pike.1989 & AldousSnow.

I like to build. I like to paint. I like Star Wars. I like the competitive aspect of the game. I like the social aspect that comes with this being Star Wars. I like that I can share this with my kids (that's a factor I've seen a lot of in the terrain building posts,) and I like what I've seen in the demos regarding the game mechanics. And I like that it's STAR WARS!

I had bought the core set for RuneWars two weeks before the announcement and was having a good time painting them with my kids. They seemed mildly interested and I thought it would be an okay game to introduce to them (they're 7 & 9). I've since abandoned any efforts on that front. It's a fine game, but I had zero prospects for playing outside of the house. Sure, the stores in my area carry the game, but NO ONE even breathed the name. LEGION came out and there actually is buzz! That's super important to me; to be able to play against other people with their own ideas on how to build a list and deploy armies and that have different tactics. There are at least two guys that I know are going to join the legion with me in my immediate area and I didn't even have to put any effort in looking. If the version for TableTop Simulator gets enough traction, there's another avenue to play as well.

Scale being fudged with is something I can live with. If you can accept that the explosions in space are giant fireballs and that everything up there makes sound, you shouldn't get bent out of shape if the models aren't super precise. You want to go nuts? Check out the scale on the A-wing. That thing is all over the place from official sources. If you're so concerned about accuracy, you're going to poop your pants trying to sort that out.

Star Wars is fun, it's funny--you're meant to have a good time. It appeals to my sense of adventure and despite how dumb it can be (Maul isn't dead? Space Wizard that can choke you from the other side of the galaxy? Etc., etc. ) I still love it.

This game scratches every itch and I've been itchy for a long time.

Game >>> Star Wars >>> Hobby, for me.

If it wasn't FFG, no deal. I have faith in FFG to make a fun game, but any other company making the game and I'd almost certainly not care.

If it wasn't Star Wars, depends - I could be won over by a variety of possible sci-fi aesthetics, although I would lose interest if it wasn't sci-fi. (I'm not a very big Star Wars fan at all, actually. But I can dig the aesthetic.)

If it wasn't unpainted/unassembled, I'd like it better! Can't stand painting, personally. :D

All 3 man. Cant wait for the competitive scene. Hope we can get some of the xwing players and Armada players over to the dark side.

Im here to play. Im here for Star Wars. Im here for Vader. I also want to get into painting.

All three, it different amounts.

I'm just getting into painting, so it's a fun "every once in a while" type of thing for me. I'm not craftsy enough to make terrain.

As far as the game goes, I looked into getting into one of the other, bigger name miniature games but it was too complex for me to even finish reading the rulebook (that alone just got boring). The Star Wars skin helps, but the rules in general are just SO much better and streamlined than the other stuff I looked at. I really like the tactical combat type stuff, so I thought I could really get into and enjoy playing Legion.

Most importantly, I'm a huge Star Wars fan, so I probably would've played it on that alone. I've picked up a lot of different trading card, tabletop, roleplaying, and minis games for Star Wars over the years. Some I like more than others but I've enjoyed all of them.

I am completely new to this type of game. I haven't so much as painted a miniature or seen a live game be played ever. I've been aware of mini games for probably 10 years. I always thought it was a cool hobby, but that's about the extent of it.

I guess the true thing that peaked my interest was "because it's Star Wars". I was very strongly considering picking up Imperial Assault to play with some friends, because of my love of Star Wars. I did some digging into that game, and subsequently discovered this one. Legion appeals to me because of the scope of army building, as well as the fact that its new. Honestly, the fact that it hasn't launched yet is probably the number one reason I will try this and have dismissed all past games. It is incredibly intimidating to enter into a game with years and years of history and expansions and character availability. I can stay on top of something that's launching new.

After that, I'm interested in the game. Ultimately that's what I want; something strategic I can play with my buddies. I have one friend I am fairly certain I can convince to hop on board, I have another two that might try it out if I can provide them with an army to play with (and then hopefully convince them of the fun after that). Miniature war games are not played in my city - at least, if they are, I'm not aware of it, This may be an opportunity to convert some people, because the game looks incredibly fun and strategic.

Lastly, its the hobby. If these came pre-painted I wouldn't mind. However, if I'm going to really try this out I figure I should embrace the painting. I actually think I'm going to get a beginners painting kit with some generic minis and practice on those before I get my Legion pieces. As for Terrain, I've been looking into it, and I am trying to attract my fiance to the idea of helping me build some terrain pieces.

So... I'm really embracing this. We'll see if I like it as much as I think I will.

These are the kind of posts that keep me on these boards and proud to be a gamer. Welcome aboard. No question is a bad question. Excited to have some new blood interested in the hobby.

Same except I live in a city with a massive gaming community.

The minute, which I am fearful will be almost immediate, this goes the way of X-Wing ... that "meta" business with the need to play a specific list to remain competitive ... I am afraid it becomes less fun. I am holding out hope FFG is forward thinking enough to not allow that to happen. So far the rules and the point system look like things will be balanced. But ...

There is always "that guy." Please, FFG, don't create a gaming ecosystem ... another one ... which allows "that guy" to contort a fun reality into something not worth doing

I have gotten hooked on the building and painting. Have not been able to touch any brushes or glue for 2 weeks and, finally, have time this weekend. Pretty pumped.

A lot of that, I think, depends on who you're playing with. If you manage to find a good group or if everyone at your local FLGS is pretty casual, you don't have to worry about "meta." If you're playing in tournaments or a league or something, well, you'll probably run into a lot more "meta" lists.

My understanding though, is that FFG has been doing pretty well with this. I was talking to someone the other day about X-Wing, as I haven't kept up with it very well. The guy said that some of the old stuff is still pretty usable, and there's still people winning with the "worst" ships. He also noted t hat FFG has probably learned a lot about how to do things since X-Wing.

Even if it does get really meta, that's not necessarily bad. For example, I ran tournaments for one of the less well-played card games that had a pretty well-established and narrow meta. I'd bring random or janky decks and they LOVED it. It was fun because it wasn't one of the "typical" matches and a lot of times it'd give people ideas or inspiration for their own experimentation. Plus it was just fun to see their faces when they still lost.

Point is, you can play what you want and have fun, and might even still be competitive if that's what you're worried about. And there'll always be those oddballs to play against to mix things up :)

i am here because anything star wars + game = awesome
