Will there be day 1 setting books?

By dresdinseven, in Genesys

I know none have been announced for immediate release (outside of Netrunner for some indeterminate point in the future), but do you think there will be any surprise announcements when Genesys is officially released? I can think of reasons why they wouldn't announce titles, mostly that anyone who wanted a setting that isn't in the initial release roster (even if it's coming later) might be discouraged and in turn not buy the core rule book. There's a finalized in-house rule set that settings books could use, and no real reason (outside of pre-orders?) that these things would need to be announced. On the other hand, FFG seems to be announcing the release of every little thing lately, so who knows.

If there WAS going to be a surprise reveal, which settings do you think it would be? Not which ones you would like to be announced, but the ones you think FFG would drop.

I fear if it's not showing up under Upcoming , there will be none in the intermediate future. Aside from Genesys, there are actually only SW books listed.

Which I feel is a mistake, launch day is the best day for a setting book, that way when people go to get the core book they grab the setting book as well (this applies to being at a brick n mortar store where items can be physically grabbed or an online store where shipping can be bundled), instead of letting the hype cool and forgetting/not caring enough to throw more money at FFG.

But who knows, anything could happen between now and launch. Are they holding off to force people to play with the tool kit before adding all sorts of layers to it?

I suspect you're right that it's a mistake, much like the trickle of previews instead of a stream is a mistake. Even a one-shot would provide some context for how to put the system to work. The Edge players will jump right in most likely, but if the intention of building Genesys is to provide a framework apart from the Star Wars IP, then offering up at least a mini-setting is fairly critical so newbies know what the heck they're doing. I'm fairly sure all of the other RPG engines out there had stuff right out of the gate, if not extensive and immediate third party support.

That's what I fear a bit and which reminds me of Fantasy AGE by Green Ronin. Taking the Narrative Dice out of their license product line Star Wars to make a generic system out of it, Green Ronin ripped the engine out of Dragon Age. Then came...well, nothing for a long long time. Now they intend to create a Modern AGE version for their oncoming The Expanse RPG. I say too little too late, I lost interest in that system a long time ago because they neglected it. The Expanse could be a candidate setting for me utilitzing Genesys.

I also think that it would be a good idea for FFG to start promoting both the core game more, and setting books. Android and Runebound seem the most likely starting places. Why not give us an announcement?

My fear is that they only have one team working on Genesys and all of it's settings. Sort of how the three Star Wars lines are really one line, and EotE products slowed down when AoR was released, and then both EotE and AoR slowed down with F&D.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: I'm rather certain they'll release material for Runebound, Android, Arkham Horror, and Twilight Imperium (in this order), but anything beyond that (smaller existing IPs of theirs? new ones?) is anyone's guess. Yet I'm afraid they'll miss their window for an effective/successful release...

And I still claim, L5R could've been the perfect litmus test for a first Genesys setting. But no, they decided to make some own new hybrid system part narrative dice and part former edition mechanics for Rokugan.

Agreed, Genesys would have worked perfectly for L5R, just with a change to the health system and lethality.

Personally rather than specific setting books, I'd like to see another book with genre rules with - or deeper dives into each genre. A fantasy with 4 or 5 magic systems that all work with the rules. some specific talents for mixed genre (urban fantasy, Science Fantasy, Weird West) - more tools for use to make our own setting with.

I like this idea a lot. Personally, I want Settings and Genre books.

They still need to advertise this!

If they're not careful all the public will buy is the core rules and a set of dice!

Seriously though would that still be cheaper than buying the core rules for Starfinder?!!?

Guessing there will be one setting released with the core book. Most likely Runebound?

The ship has sailed on L5R. I have made my feelings heard on this subject.

Do they know what they are doing? You would think so, they have launched RPGs before. The problem being that they have had strong IPs to promote the games. This is a different ball of wax altogether.

Where are any of you getting any inclination that there's another book coming along with the Core Rulebook?

They might announce another book in the cycle around the time the book drops, but FFG has never just "surprised" us with "Hey, here's a book we never told you about! Enjoy!" But that book would likely be months away from release.

Book shipping and distribution doesn't work that way. It can't, or the book could never get out to us. Suppliers need to know a book is coming, and get orders set up months in advance.

Maybe they will drop a PDF or PoD only splatbook. No distributor necessary

We can dream, man, we can dream.

Although FFG did somewhat the same thing with the "MYSTERY PRODUCT!" for this last Force Friday, so it's not a total outside possibility. But there was some hype leading up to that. It's just a shame, really, that we're given the dev kit and no release titles, especially ones that are guaranteed sellers (Netrunner, et al).

I think it might be FFG are planing the following.

Release core book. (Every one making there own setting grabs it) At the same time show Android book to wet appetites.

Release Android. (Sells with wave 2 of core) next book is announced.

Release next setting with core wave 3...........and so on.

this would smooth demand for the core book, something FFG have had trouble with for SWFFG.

It baffles me that L5R wasn't part of Genesys. Makes me also wonder if they will end up hurting the game due to having multiple similar systems at once.

I really want to see Genesys do well but can't help but feel they've had some misteps. Probably would have been a good idea to have some new books already announced that could be released within a month of the core book.
