New painter, old airbrush, rebel ships

By FalconLugnut, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Hi, Folks -

I have been so impressed and inspired by all the great work I've seen on this forum that I dusted off my 30-year-old (maybe more?) airbrush to give painting some of my Rebels a go. These are just phone pictures, so my apologies for the lack of quality.

I'm learning as I go, so I'll post them in chronological order of my painting...

Transport - I thought this one would be easiest given its size and easily defined areas to paint. I kept it simple with the red and some more color on the cargo containers. I'm happy enough with it. I learned first hand how a nuln oil wash darkens everything on this one. This ship isn't very easy to photograph for some reason.

Auzituck - I love the patterns on this ship out of the box, but I thought it was too monotone. It looks so much like a Russian HIND ground-attack helicopter that I felt that it needed a grey belly and under the wings so it isn't as visible in the sky when viewed from the ground. I suppose that doesn't make sense for space battles, but I can live with that. I also painted some engine pieces and the guns, of course.

TIE/FO - The white "wings" seemed like they needed color, and yellow was calling to me for some reason. Not very "First Order", but I'm okay with that. It looked way too clean and pristine afterward, so I decided to experiment with battle damage and another wash. Might have gone overboard a bit with the damage, but I like it anyway. I made the "through-damage" go through one side and into the other, which may not come across in the photos.

VCX-100 Ghost - I didn't want to do too much here since I like the stock paint scheme. I just thought that it needed more color, so I added the orange. I wanted it to look like it could pass for an out-of-the-box color combo, and I think it turned out pretty well.

Two more ships to follow!

At this point, I have gained some confidence in my airbrush skills, so I decided to tackle the Scurrg H-6. This one was going to be a bit more ambitious though - it's a complete repaint other than the canopy. I haven't gotten enough confidence to do those yet. I felt like the pointy bits in the front of the Scurrg look like fangs, so I wanted some white there. I was going to do a white/black/grey combo, but swapped the black out for blue-gray at the last minute. For some reason, I had a geometric camo pattern thought in my head for this one, so I went with it. I'm happy with the result.

The last one is my K-wing. I liked the Scurrg so much that I decided to do the same process. Funny how I started seeing Scurrg/K-wing lists on YouTube afterward. Now I have a matching bomber pair. I like the results here, too, though I think the pattern lends itself to the Scurrg slightly better.

I'm not sure what my next paint job will be. I want to paint the ARC-170, but it intimidates me for some reason. I still need to think of a paint scheme that I want to do, I guess.

Comments welcome! Thanks to all of you for providing the inspiration to get into this!

I love that Scurrg repaint. I'm going to steal it.

Which color did you lay down first?

Right on! Glad you like it!

I went from lightest to darkest, so I painted the whole thing white, then masked and applied the gray, then masked some more and did the blue-gray.

Please take pictures of your version when you're done!

You got it.

I'm afraid it will be as close to yours in color palette though. That color combo really works for this ship.

That's fine with me. Thanks for saying that - I think the colors work well together on it, too. Those colors all come from the Vallejo Basic Colors Airbrush paint set.

Your masking will be different since it's so random, so it'll be nice to see your take on it.

The Scurrgh is beautiful!

Impressive work all round!!

Those bombers are lovely. The step by step view is very cool as well. Great stuff!

What kid of wash do you use?

*kind

I use Citadel Nuln Oil. As I've since seen mentioned on these forums, nuln oil definitely darkens the paint quite a bit. When I first used it on the transport, I just slopped it on for full coverage. It looks fine, but it can get blotchy in some spots that way and you've kind of committed to covering the rest of the red paint so it matches at that point. Now I use it very sparingly with a mostly dry brush when I'm doing flat areas, especially the white panels. Recessed areas like the intakes at the front of the Scurrg still get a fairly wet brush so it pools in the nooks and crannies. I have since ordered some Vallejo color washes which I plan on experimenting with next.

I made my wash from scratch, so I can't get very good results yet....

Well done, really looks great!

As promised:

Hope it does the original justice!

Holy crap, that was fast! You don't mess around! Looks great! Good job! What did you do on the bottom of the ship? Same as me or different?

Mostly the same:

Love it. Our ships together would surely dominate the galaxy.

Imitation - the highest forum of flattery!

If you gloss or satin coat the model before the Nuln Oil wash it is easier to remove and won't darken the underlying paint as much. The varnish seals the roughness of the flat paint and the wash stays on top rather than soaking in.

Your paint schemes are great! Especially like the Scurrg and K-Wing combo. Nice touch!

Tips like that are why I like this forum so much. I'll be giving that a try next time!

Thanks for the compliment on the paint schemes - I'm not sure where the Scurrg/K-wing scheme came from. I swear I blacked out and did it in my sleep or something. Hopefully, it strikes again sometime soon!
