World Championship Tournament Structure?

By ..H.., in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I'm curious about how this whole "multiple day 1" structure works. From what I read on the FFG page:

Quote

The Winter Court World Championship consists of three separate Day 1 events, November 1st through 3rd–Day 1Z on Wednesday, Day 1A on Thursday, and Day 1B on Friday–plus a combined Day 2 on Saturday, November 4th. Each Day 1 , competitors will play six Swiss-paired rounds. Each player that earns at least 34 tournament points (Win = 10, Modified Win = 6, Loss = 1, Modified Loss = 0) advances to Day 2.

So, if one achieves 34 points (or more) on Day 1Z, do they still compete on Day 1A and/or Day 1B? Do they simply apply the best result of all the days you compete in?

I feel there must be some document I am missing, but I can't seem to find one that explains this.

There are 3 day 1, day 1Z on Wednesday, day 1A on Thursday , and day 1B on Friday. You may only play in one of those days. If you achieve 34 points you advance to day 2 on saturday.

Ah, OK, that makes more sense now.

Is it true that players of 1A and 1B did not have to submit their decklist before 1Z matches started? If so, it's a bit unfair...

That is true. You turn in your deck on paper, and most of day 1A & 1B hadn’t arrived by day 1Z.

It may comfort you to know that Day 1Z had fewer players.

But this mean that 1B players can wait until tomorrow too, looking at today's decks, results and stats...

... so what?

I believe it's a big deal to those playing competitive card games. If the meta is showing rock on the previous days, one can show up with paper as anti-meta.

Of course, other folks may account for paper and go with scissors as anti-meta meta... LOL

But I think it will hurt someone who goes early with a unique deck (darkhorse) that makes some noise. That being said, the card pool is not big right now so maybe this is not possible.

Then again, I believe Boundless Ambition made a huge splash at Destiny Worlds.

So players from later days have access to deck lists from earlier days, but the reverse is not true. If players could change decks for day 2, it wouldn't matter, but, as it is, it gives an unfair advantage to those who start later.

How exactly are players getting access to other players decklists? The only info I've seen spoiled are the player's names, clans, and points totals from the 1Z pool.

Scouting. Walk around, watch games.

Im not playing til friday.

Im playing Unicorn. I saw D1 we had a terrible showing so I chatted with those guys to see what they ran. I have been watching percentages of clans. Ive been paying attention to top tables lists.

All allows me to make more tweaks for Friday. I agree, it is a bit unfair. Should have all turned on Wednesday, either in person or email for those not arriving til latee.

Not the actual deck lists, but they can scout games, watch the streams, talk to other players, etc. Then take that knowledge and alter their decks before the tournament.

While I do feel that all decklists from all players should have been submitted before the tournament started, regardless of what day people play on, I really don't see how there is going to be that much of an impact. The top players from each group will not meet up until "day 2" Saturday. Anyone from pool 1A or 1B still has to get through their pool first and make the cut before any of their scouting or deck alterations would pay any dividends.

If I'm in pool 1B and I sit through the first two days of coverage and scout out all the players that are advancing to Satruday and I see "whoa man there are mostly Scorpion and Phoenix so I better switch up some stuff" then I roll into my 1B pool play and the meta is heavy Lion and Unicorn so all my prep and deck tweeking ends up possibly hurting me and I fail to make day two.

The top players have already made their decisions on the overall metagame and will all be able to see the same coverage from the day 1 pools before going into Saturday play. If they notice any tricky cards they weren't expecting, they'll make note of it, but, there really aren't any surprises in the core only environment.

Not as big a deal as some are making it out to be.

I agree, and there could be an overcompensation too, where a lot of players do this, and end up completely messing up their own meta by trying to compensate for the perceived meta. Also, players in 1Z can watch the same coverage of 1A and 1B players, since they are getting the same treatment.
