WHas anyone bought the original core set recently?

By Larky Bobble, in X-Wing

The reason why I'm asking is that I've noticed that they've restocked the original core set and I'd love to know if the Biggs card was updated or not... Anyone know?

It'd be a shame if they hadn't calibrated the reprints with the FAQ and updates.

I want to get another core set but I want to get it with the new Biggs. Thanks for any replies...

I've been meaning to get one for awhile, but I need that money for GUNBOATs...

Apparently the K-Wing reprints have the new wording on Advanced SLAM. Not sure about any other reprints/revisions, though.

I bought one of the reprinted original Cores, but don't have the cards handy ATM. Are you looking to know if Biggs has the new "once per game" text?

Picked one up on Tuesday, NO CHANGE to the text on Biggs.

What about the damage deck, is it still the original deck or did they phase that out for the updated one?

The announcement is relatively new, so I'm not too shocked.

Would love if they started doing this, though. Bonus points if they came with little version numbers on the corner.

Original damage deck is still legal. Unfortunately.

Oh well. I guess they aren't as efficient as I'd hoped... Maybe I'll get the next reprint... Thanks!

I doubt for much longer. If they decide to do another reprint of the classic core set (and I am emphasizing the word if) it wouldn't take much to throw in the TFA one in place of the old one since by now most people have the TFA core set or even a promotional damage deck.

What updated damage deck, I haven't seen any updated damage cards. They did release a new one for TFA core.

That's the one being referred to.

Until they release them at store champ level as a 'one for everyone', they can't. The whole uproar was 'wait, we have to buy the new decks now?'. That won't change, especially when people can point to the brand new reprint that still has the old cards in it .

You'd need to quietly slip in the new deck to the old box, then change legality some time later, after handing out massive numbers of card packs at the very first level that expects it.

This... is a challenge.

Shame they didn't have the Co-Jones to 1.2 the game. Print the updated cards in sets and tweak a few rules, with the FAQ delayed to let it hit the streets nigh simultaneously (and replace the damage deck). They could have given warning that the old damage deck would only be valid for one more year, but that alt art versions would be available as prizes during the tourneys. Obviously all old pilot cards would be valid, as is.

It was the perfect moment in which to do it....

Why do people hate the old damage deck? What's the difference?

If they started to include new damage decks in store tournament kits much in the same way they gave out one in worlds 2015 then that would be a reasonable to require the new damage deck at the competitive or even the premier level. Of course that is still a logistical challenge. As far as phasing over the damage deck I see a few options.

  • Selling Special Editions of the TFA Damage deck individually for $12-$15 . Still a little pricey as now there is a $15 tournament tax for those that only have the classic damage deck but $15 is < $40 so it isn't that much of a demand. It is clear that FFG is not going to just package and sell the damage deck from the TFA core set as that isn't much value. But they could make special edition damage decks with different card backs much like the system open promos. I am sure people with both damage decks would still buy them as collectors item and more ways to personalize their list.
  • Removing the classic damage deck at premier level tournaments. You can still keep the classic damage deck as an option at lower level completions (such as regionals) until a later date. Sure now you got two separate sets of competitive rules but it is a way to ease into the new damage deck rather than slapping down the banhammer.
  • Reprint classic core set with new damage deck and all errata changes . Heck call it Core 2.0 and put in all errata cards. In there.

So yeah those are some options that FFG could use. They could do one or even all three before going all new deck only. I believe it is safe to say it is not a matter of if the old damage deck will phase out but rather a question of when will the old damage deck be removed from competitive play completely.

Some theorize the new damage deck is "more forgiving" and "better balanced" when they don't realize that it's just a different flavor of death for your plastic space ships. There are no nice crits.

Only difference really is the card backing.

Except it really is a matter of if and not when because ffg already tried to remove it and it causes quite the uproar. The fact they've continued to print it in the old damage deck means it's here to stay for the future. And does it need to be phased out? No, most people are using the new one, and the few of us diehards that like the old one can still use it just fine.

Old damage deck is important list-building tool. For example lists that have Gunner will want to use the old damage deck because of how Gunner interacts with old Blinded Pilot. Keeping it around makes the game more interesting.

Putting the new damage deck in new printings of the old Core wouldn't change the fact that FFG would be forcing people that already bought the old core set to buy something they don't need just so they could play.
