Drea Renthal BTL-A4 Synced Turret

By Slade, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Wanted to try out some scum Y-wings for a friendly game and I’m wondering if I’m playing the following situations correctly.

1. Drea Renthal has acquired a target lock. She fires her primary weapon and maintains the target lock. For the BTL attack Drea still has target lock and can use her synced turret. Drea could decide to use the target lock for a reroll on the turret shot, if she does Drea’s ability kicks in and she could (re)gain a ‘new’ target lock together with a stress.

2. Drea Renthal has acquired a target lock. She fires her primary weapon and uses the target lock for a reroll. Drea’s ability kicks in and she gains stress and (re)gains a ‘new’ target lock. For the BTL attack Drea now has a target lock that she can use the target lock for her synced turret/BTL attack. For the synced turret Drea can now us this ‘new’ target lock for a reroll if needed. If she used the ‘new’ target lock for the reroll again Drea’s ability will kick in and Drea ends up with 2 stress tokens and a target lock

P.S. The BTL-A4 doesn’t specifically call for it but I assume that the 2 nd turret attack will have to abide by all requirements, i.e. in case of synced turret a target lock is required for an attack on the ‘locked’ target, no way around that.

Thx.

Yup that's all legit.

The only major thing to note with Drea is that you can't reroll any die more than once, so even though the replacement TL is gained during the modify dice step, you can't use it for rerolling dice if you've already rolled them once.

The best thing to use it for is R4-B11 - you can have a fully modified attack and use a TL to force your enemy to reroll.

The only real trouble is the Y Wing being terrible at losing stress without Unhinged.

@Slade In both scenarios you mention spending a target lock to reroll dice for Synched Turret. Synched Turret lets you reroll dice up to your Primary Weapon value without spending the target lock. That’s what makes Synched Turret special. There’s no reason to spend a target lock on Synched Turret unless you blank out and you really need to see paint on all three dice. In that situation, I would go ahead and reroll 2 dice with the card ability, see what the results are, then spend the Target Lock for the third die if the first 2 rerolls are good.

Sure, but if he's using BTL title then he has to have them in arc to even shoot anyway.

I think your rules stuff is correct other than, as JM said, when in arc (which you'll have to be for BTL title) you don't have to spend the TL to reroll unless you just NEED to roll all 3 dice, which is pretty unlikely, but if you use it on the primary now you're stressed and can't turn around to keep them in arc making followup attacks very difficult.

Because of that I would actually NOT recommend Drea for a BTL/Sync combo. I haven't got it to the table yet but I've got a list for her without title using Sync and Unhinged Astromech so you can get that TL and then keep it, and unhinged let's her clear stress and still maneuver so you can maybe focus up as well on a followup. You could also maybe add vectored thrusters if you like to keep the TL and then barrel roll back toward the target after your next move.

If you want to run BTL with sync turret I would go with the generics and give them Agromech. Move and focus, take primary shot and spend the focus whether you roll eyeballs or not (which you are allowed to do) to get the TL and then do the Sync shot with the built in free rereoll of 2. You don't need to worry about higher PS people getting out of arc after you TL them because you won't be getting the TL till the combat phase and then next turn you can K-turn if needed to keep the pressure on. A pair of those running in tandem is not something an opponent want to get in front of, especially at range 1, and leaves 52 additional points on the list.
