Actual age recommendations?

By Doctor X, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beginner Game

Trying to recommend the game to a friend for their kids, the question of "What ages is it for" came up right away. I did not have an answer, so I looked it up.

There's nothing on the game's page, and nothing I've been able to find via Google.

The conversation is on hold until I acquire this information, so could someone tell me, please?

I've seen people on these forums have kids play as young as 6. Depends on the kid, but I think by 9 or 10 any kid could play it. I started D&D with my son about that age (might have been 8...time flies!). Honestly, if they play any video games with roleplaying elements (skill boosts, etc), they'll get it pretty quickly.

It's not a complicated game, and there are no "adult themes" unless the GM introduces them. The GM can make it as racy or saccharine as they see fit.

Ok, thanks. I knew the answer was "If you think they're old enough." However, wanted to give the actual one if possible.

The game is pretty combat-centric (or can be), so keep that in mind if you don't want the little ones shooting and fighting and whatnot. I know some parents try to minimize that sort of thing.

@KRKappel was actually on a podcast a little while ago ( Heroes of the Hydian Way , I think) talking about his experiences running the game for small children. It's worth a listen. Should give you an idea of the wacky things kids might come with, like slicing Imperial systems to force all stormtroopers to attend a mandatory pizza party. :D

One paid for by Darth Vader, only Mandatory if you want to keep your job. (And you want to save your one free "warning" choke til later)

I think the "official" recommended age is 13 and up. I remember seeing that somewhere. But I'm on mobile and can't see it anywhere on the product page.

But yeah my son is 7 and he's been playing the game with me since he was 5. It's different playing with young kids, which is perhaps why there is a recommended minimum age, but the great thing about roleplaying games is that you can always tailor them to your playgroup, whether your group consists of six middle-aged adults who prefer a nuanced game of galactic intrigue and complex political power struggles, or a single six-year-old who just wants to blow up battle droids and fly around the galaxy in a ship that makes fart noises.
